The Thing is completely underrated. Darkly stylish, subversive ending and a great exploration of identity. I'm so glad you included it.

such an excellent piece of paranoid horror and the 80s synth score is perfectly paired with the mood of the story

So, like you Mr. Flemmings, I’m not drawn to horror films, mainly because the seem to try to hard for otherworldly elements when real world fears are so much more terrifying. Michael Haneke knows this, which may be why not just Funny Games, buy Chache, The White Balloon, and Happy End all put the fear and horror largely at the edges, where the threat is constant. And Bone Tomahawk! What a film. It follows my essential rule for horror while utterly turning everything inside out at the second act. Building its tensions gradually, the payoffs in the reveal of the ghostly and garish killers is earned the hard way, the only way a horror film should earn them.

Great list I understand why for personal reasons the shining doesn’t work for you, but it seems profoundly disturbing that the exorcist doesn’t make it on this list. I would’ve definitely bumped multiple films on your list over the exorcist.

Could be because I’ve seen and read some scary stuff but the shining is only kinda scary the first time you see it. I usually fall asleep if it’s on. Audition and Funny Games are real horrors to me, but then I never had a dad to be scared of. Maybe THAT’S why the shining bores me? Who knows. I love some scary movies though. Curious to know what you think about Alexandre Aja’s High Tension (I think outside the US it’s called Switchblade Romance).

The Game and Zodiac from David Fincher are good contenders for a list like this as well. If I were to make a couple recommendations (if they have not been seen yet): Jack Ketchum's The Girl Next door and Henry: Portrait of a Serial Killer.

A number of my favorites overlap with yours: The Thing, Alien, The Fly, Se7en, Funny Games, and Bone Tomahawk. Bone Tomahawk actually works just as well as an adventure film for me as a horror. Despite its scary moments, it functions even more as arguably my favorite adventure film of all time. There's that deep sense that these characters -- who are just everyday types of people living in the Western frontier and hardly overpowered heroes (a similar appeal that Alien had for me) -- are going on this perilous and high-stakes journey while rushing against the clock. I love the banter between the characters and the growing sense of camaraderie between them. My favorite scenes are actually the more mundane ones like the conversations over a campfire, and I think those scenes help to highlight that these are very relatable and mortal characters and not action heroes. Some additional favorites of mine include Ravenous (1999), VVitch, Silence of the Lambs, and the first half of Silent Hill (2006). The second half of Silent Hill got bogged down in exposition, but I really thought the first half was a masterclass in suspenseful horror. I also have a soft spot for the pseudo-Lovecraftian Apostle (2018).

Yeah man Zahler is a great contemporary filmmaker, all three of his films mentioned show he is an auteur in a time where Hollywood is laking. Cool little footnote to Tomahawk, Kirt Russell, shot it just before Hateful Eight so was all good to go with with the great moustache! I find it hard really to put films in a top ten order really as if we're honest , Alien can't be that far down the list! I feel we are kindred spirits in our movie and musical tastes, thought your vid about trip hop was great to, with potential to be made it to a long form doc, worth thinking about.

I adore everything you mentioned here with the exception of two. I don't like the Saw series (even though I'm a gore nut), and I haven't seen the original The Vanishing (looks way better than the American version, which I have seen). Whenever someone mentions Takashi Miike, I get giddy because I am a Miike superfan. Audition is easily his best horror film. However, my top two favorite Miike films are not horror. One is The Happiness of the Katakuris, a truly unique comedy unlike no other, and one of the best films ever made (in my humble opinion). The second is Deadly Outlaw Rekka, a slice of Yakuza vengeance gold. If you have not seen these two, I highly recommend them on my life.
@MarcusFlemmings
@MarcusFlemmings 8 ай бұрын
I need to get more into Milke! I've only seen Audtion -- but that's 1/1 of incredibleness!!!! The Yakuza film sounds amazing and I need to watch Ichi the Killer!
@SewerTapes
@SewerTapes 8 ай бұрын
@@MarcusFlemmings Just know that with 115 directing credits, a film like Audition is closer to the exception than the rule. Miike has a lot of films that come off as absurdist Japanese Roger Corman productions. Ichi is one of those, gaining a reputation for its absolute batsh!t weirdness. Many people mention its violence, but it's mostly very funny looking CGI. Tonally, even though a great deal of its presentation can seem dead serious, it's also absurd to a WTF degree. It's certainly not for everyone, but if you sit down to watch Ichi ready to laugh at some (I believe intentional) outlandishness, I think you'll have a good time.

Are gory slasher movies really scary? Love, Death, and Robots S1 E7: Beyond the Aquila Rift is genuinely horrifying because it suggests the plausible possibility that your reality could be completely false and in fact you exist in an unimaginable nightmare. The concept of The Matrix is scarier than a lot of these films honestly. As a viewer are you really scared? Most horror films startle with jump scares, unsettle with atmosphere, or disgust with gore. Convergence, The Lighthouse (if you agree that Robert Paterson's character is trapped in a loop of perpetual torture for past crimes), Shutter Island, and, Event Horizon are scary because you as the viewer feel unsafe at the possibility you are not experiencing "true" reality but a delusion or distortion of it.

@AmityvilleFan
@AmityvilleFan 8 ай бұрын
@@MarcusFlemmings It was actualy a very big event film, not at all obscure. The gimmick was, that each story was written and directed by a woman (who previously did not try horror). It - not unexpectedly - didn't turn out particularly good, thus popular, but I still love that one segment for its outsider-art approach. As I'm running low on un-reviewed Amityville stuff, I'm thinking how to expand my content, will see what can I do.

I’m just not scared by horror films anymore. I started reading Stephen King at 11 with a splash of the Vampire chronicles. At 12 my dad and siblings watched every living dead film and capped the night with graveyard shift. Looking back I assume that’s why I’m just not “scared” by much. I will say most of the films on this list are either my favorites or I’m just not able to watch the whole movie because of how well done they are in the scares. Great list!
