Preston is actually an awesome character. However game the developers did him dirty, they should have found a better way to produce radiant quests rather than writing it into a decent companion.

It's more difficult to find some actual good characters in Fallout 4. Not nearly enough for even a "Top 5"

When Dumber Boy runs up and tries to give you the first Randolph Safehouse quest he starts off "Hey you ! Randolph Safehouse...". If you walk away (as I usually do, since I REALLY dislike being addressed that way) he chases you around HQ repeatedly trying to give you the quest : "Hey you... !" "Hey you... ! " "Hey you... !" "Hey you... !" He's been introduced to the business end of a shotgun many, many times...
