"Honey" is actually about clinical depression and suicide. Who knew it could be contagious through radio play?? "Dizzy" does, in fact, have a "hook". It's in the one bar pre-chorus that sets the song up for a key change from F to E.

I grew up in this era, and I didn't remember Indian Giver, but these are the actual lyrics to a song we learned in music class: We are the redmen tall and straight, in our feathers and warpaint. Pow wow, pow wow, we're the men of the old dead cow. We are the redmen, feathers in our head men, down among the dead men, pow wow. We can fight with sticks and stones, bows and arrows, dead men's bones... - yeah, it's stuck in my head until the day I die, along with the tunes of old cigarette commercials. Glad to hear you felt you had to explain what an Indian Giver was. Be careful what you expose your kids to because that early stuff sticks with you.

Best part of The Doors' "Touch Me" comes right at the end, when you can just barely hear them sing "stronger than dirt!". From an Ajax detergent commercial that was running on TV at the time. The one with the knight on horseback who points his lance at people and suddenly there's a flash of blinding light and all their clothes turn white.

Never thought I'd hear a Moliere reference in one of your videos. But the last song is like "Thank Heaven For Little Girls" from Gigi in a similar way. Bobby Goldsboro is the worst mashup of grandmother/sentimental dad music. If "Bubble Gum Music" had been sung insincere, the way Peter Paul and Mary did "I Dig Rock'n'Roll Music" as a passive-aggressive way of claiming to love the music and really hating it, it might have worked as a satire. Another enjoyable list, and now on to the best...

Obviously the songs rank so high on the pop charts meant that the song was liked by a large number of people. In the pre-download days you had to physically go to the goddamn record store and buy the record. And you had to request a song on the radio to real live in DJs. It’s not like today were their charting everything from an album by Taylor Swift and the entire top 10 is your crappy music. This music actually resonated with people because they physically had to go and get the music they wanted

It's actually worse than you make it sound. At least for me anyway. The Vic Reeves cover of Dizzy was with the then Indie Rock Band du Jour - The Wonder Stuff in their 'Size Of A Cow' irritating folk rock phase. This version was #1 for two weeks in the UK and a big hit in Australia, Ireland and New Zealand. And it had even more wretched key changes than the original. Even now the song gives me flashbacks to bad 90s student discos and the smell of stale sweat and Newcastle Brown Ale.

My favourite thing about The Turtles is that their two singers Mark Volman and Howard Kaylan went on to work with Frank Zappa in the new Mothers Of Invention under the names Flo And Eddie. I know that particular era divides audiences. I know a lot of people dislike it. However there is a version of Happy Together on their Live At Fillmore East album. One of my personal favourites is the comedy epic Billy The Mountain. There are several versions of that but the one I know and perhaps many of us are most familiar with is the one from their live performance at Pauley Pavillion UCLA. There are also versions of two songs from the previous Mothers Call Any Vegetable and Dog Breath from the albums Absolutely Free and Uncle Meat respectively.

In addition to the great bands and albums (Beatles, Beach Boys, etc), he has TONS of miscellaneous stuff, including countless "BEST OF THE 60's and 70's!" compilations. A couple of weeks later, he said, "Hey, can you help me get rid of a song?" The song was "Indian Giver". His reasons were it sucked and also super racist. 1000's of songs, and he just couldn't stand that one.

I agree with your "hot takes" on "Touch Me" and "You Showed Me," because it was your arguments that convinced me. I couldn't stop laughing once you pointed the unsmiling Miss Teen USA pageant contestants in the background of the video. Another reason to dislike "You Showed Me" is that De La Soul sampled it on their first album, and the Turtles sued them for more than $1 million over it, and the Turtles didn't even write the song! It was an unrecorded early Byrds song, but somehow the Turtles made it just completely catatonic and snoozy. And that Turtles-De La Soul lawsuit was not good for hip hop. Because of lawsuits like that, hip hop moved away from the dense, textured, multilayered samples of the Beastie Boys, "Paul's Boutique" and De La Soul's "3 Feet High and Rising" to rap songs that would sample one old hit song & run it into the ground (e.g., MC Hammer's "U Can't Touch This").
@josephwest124 Жыл бұрын
Obviously, YOU don't understand what the Turtles' suit was about. The sample had NOTHING to do with the *song* but rather the Turtles' PERFORMANCE. See, De La Soul took the TURTLES' actual recording of the song and incorporated it into their song WITHOUT PERMISSION. The sample was slowed down a bit but it was definitely from the Turtles' version of the song. The Turtles took the Gene Clark and Roger McGuinn song and slowed it down--the Clark/McGuinn version recorded by the Byrds had a moderately fast rock tempo--and De La Soul took, or "stole" depending on your viewpoint, the Turtles' version and slowed it down just a touch and overlaid other sampled material. Sampling laws now cover not only lyrics but also actual musical performances, both vocal and instrumental. If someone wants to use a piece but doesn't want to pay for the rights to the original performance, they can get someone else to do the piece--a process known as "interpolating," like Kelly Price singing "I'm coming out" à la Diana Ross at the start of the song "Mo Money Mo Problem" (Bernard Edwards and Nile Rodgers got a songwriting credit, since they wrote that part--as well as other musical bits through the song--but if the song had simply sampled Diana's vocal, she would've been entitled to a percentage of the song's royalties as well; Kelly's singing the part instead meant that Diddy could just pay her one time and, without an actual credit on the song, she wasn't entitled to any more).

I Started A Joke still one of the all time asshole anthems. I guess you can say it's cancelled comedians, but I still see it as the guy who makes an offensive joke at his friends party, never gets invited ever again then realizes no one liked him even before, such was merely an excuse to drop the banhammer. I called #1 I mean how on earth could I not. As I said before as I have experience with this, Pregnant Missus is not, oh I'm so glad to be a woman. It's I have so much heartburn, It's so hot in here (It's 68 with A/C) it's being miserable at work, the theater and any 4th of July picnic and then it's long conversations about health insurance, getting the baby's room and crib ready and while we were always upbeat about the baby, never ever was it I feel happy to be a woman, but more I can't wait until this is over finally. But then such is harder to make into a commercial song. And of course Honey the song sung from a prick who was such a jackass he didn't even bother to notice obvious signs of depression that led to the angels coming. Indeed his tribute to his love is chock full of making fun of her, her wrecking his car, seeing her cry at some late late show and her being kinda dumb and kinda smart. In other words, where as I Started A Joke has self reflection, this guy is just going on about how he misses her, but really probably because he misses having her do his laundry. Seasons In The Sun while melodramatic as fuck and fairly notorious, at least feels earnest like he actually is going to miss all these people. In Honey it's as if he followed up the song with, now that that's over, who's up for Chinese food?

If you ever feel the need to subject yourself to a late 80's version of that Grateful Dead / Herb Alpert diss in that Double Bubble Trading Card Company record... Look up the Reynolds Girls and their magnum opus 'I'd Rather Jack' - a song that was a hit in Europe but - (un)luckily for you - wasn't in North America. It says things about Fleetwood Mac, Dire Straits, The Rolling Stones, Pink Floyd and Heavy Metal generally while sounding painfully and ridiculously 1989 with that then modish SAW production. You'll love to hate it, guaranteed. That these superannuated bands are worthy of robust criticism is by the by. The Reynolds Girls just weren't the right ones to do it, just like that 1969 bubblegum band before them.
