Excellent video! As someone who has reviewed numerous Cathy Mitchell products over the years, I found this very enjoyable. You're a great storyteller! The book's non-existence is the result of a common practice in the As Seen on TV industry, especially in the 2010s. The way it usually works is that a product is conceived, a prototype is made, a commercial is shot, and orders are taken. If the product generates interest, they'll send customers a "This item is in back order" notice to buy themselves time while they have the product produced. If the product fails to generate interest, they simply cancel all orders and refund (or don't charge, if a card wasn't charged initially) everyone's money - with nothing more than a prototype having been produced. It's not exactly a consumer-friendly model, but it does make sense from the company's perspective. When the product is made, sometimes the final version doesn't look quite like the prototype, which rarely goes over well with consumers! I've seen this occur with products, but never a book, so that was interesting to see. It was also interesting they ended up publishing it under a different name. Once again, excellent job!

There’s something so wholesome about watching a random video from an up and coming creator and noticing a supportive comment from one of your favorite established creators. That also makes so much sense from a product perspective about how these situations happen and it somehow found its way to the perfect person to elaborate on what probably happened
@DesignDawg7 ай бұрын
Yep. And as someone who makes infomercials (and has worked with Cathy numerous times and has Telebrands/Bulbhead as a client), the practice of running the commercial with no product is called a "dry test." As mentioned, it's a lot more rare these days. The business model has changed quite a bit. But back in the day, those spots all used to say 6-8 weeks for delivery. This was one reason why. They needed time to complete the media test, see if they were going to make significantly more money on the product than they spent in media cost, and if it was a winner, only then would they place the order for the goods, and they would ramp up their media spend. I love how this video turned out. Great job by the channel!

@Arbbal6 ай бұрын
@@SeithonJetter I don't know about it being corporate. I was always told someone would invent something, make a rough prototype, and go to the infomercial company. Tip for your next book obsession: start at the library. Any book that is published in the US (or which is planned to be published) is cataloged and collected by the Library of Congress, and they do in fact have an entry for Ramen Joy, (though due to the book never making it to a printing, they of course don't have a copy). Your local librarian would have been able to look this up for you, and researched why the book was not available, and saved you a bit of trouble rummaging through thrift stores and ebay and the like. Of course, had the book made it to printing, they would have most likely been able to get a copy to lend to you via an inter-library loan.

So, I'm actually the one who originally uploaded the Ramen Joy informercial to KZbin back in 2016. Like you, I'm kind of fascinated by Kathy Mitchell's work, and discovered the Ramen Joy website when I was searching for her old GT Express 101 infomercial, which I used to watch all the time in high school. Had I known the website would vanish off the face of the earth shortly thereafter, I would've taken the time to archive it! Anyway - the website's home page had the Ramen Joy infomercial streaming on it, and, like basically everyone who's watched it, I was fascinated. To my complete shock, I soon discovered that nobody had uploaded it to KZbin, and figured, if nobody else is gonna do it, it might as well be me. So I used my flash video downloader extension, saved the video from the Ramen Joy website, and put it up on KZbin, where I guessed more people would see it. I had no idea how right I would be. Between Jaboody Dubs, BrutalMoose, and now you, it's kind of surreal to see this dumb video I uploaded on a whim almost a decade ago spawn all this great content. Sorry for the long comment, but I figured I could at least add the context of how the infomercial ended up on KZbin in the first place. Anways, great work! You've got a new subscriber.

And Cathy seems like a fun lady! Also- it's actually very common for recipe books to not be wholly 'original'. Even from their invention they were often cobbled together from recipes from other books, newspapers/magazines, and other sources (such as knowing a particular chef or family recipe). And there's nothing wrong with that- after all, unless you literally invented the dish yourself from scratch, you had to have learned to cook it from someone else, even if you later make changes to that recipe. Recipes are meant to be handed down and tweaked, rather than re-invented every time you want to make something.

Can't believe you got her to agree to an interview. That's amazing! Great work.

I came here because I saw something related to Brutalmoose (my favorite KZbinr ever), and I stayed because of your great presentation style, incredible research, and of course, for Cathy Mitchell. Fantastic video, you earned a new fan and subscriber :)

Hope the algorithm picks this up! Already got this recommended in my home page, this was so good! This genre of video where people search for obscure almost lost media is so intriguing to me LOL

youve actually gone on the journey ive wanted to for so long. ive been a fan of infomercials from birth and theres NO WAY half of these recipes could be real. what a champion! great video!

That interview was so wholesome! I love going on rabbitholes involving people's work. I went on a rabithole for Gaulish mythology once and was blocked from reading this one article so I reached out to the guy who wrote it and he was happy to give me some information! And since ive gotten to college I've learned people love when you show interest in their life's work

I'm not from the US but I've watched most if not all of her infomercials on KZbin and I love her so much. Her old ads are better imo because she loved talking about her kids. It's like watching your own mom in her kitchen preparing food for her family. She's the undisputed queen of infomercials. God bless Cathy Mitchell.

This was so cool! I remember watching both Cathy Mitchell's infomercials and the Jaboody Dubs parodies. The fact you managed to actually get her on is so awesome!

The retro videogame music, the editing, the love of infomercials. This screams like a Nick Robinson video. That's a huge compliment to you, I loved this video. Fantastic job, subbed!

For once the algorithm got me right with this video! I rarely comment but you are the first small KZbinr I stumbled upon who's content is so genuinely enjoyable and I had to tell you! I was hoping you'd try one of the recipes at the end but the interview was so interesting, i wasn't disappointed 😊

I stumbled across Cathy's infomercials on KZbin during the pandemic and have been weirdly obsessed ever since. I'm glad I'm not the only one! So cool that you were able to finally get in touch with her. She seems just as sweet in real life as she does in the commercials. Great video!

4:32 The song playing in the background is 'Stickerbrush Symphony' from the DKC2 OST if you're wondering.
@monhi648 ай бұрын
I was waiting for someone to comment on the soundtrack but specifically all the other songs because they seem to be paper Mario. Although that seems to be a bit of a KZbinr trend idk how many of them are doing it outta any appreciation for the game or maybe even know it’s paper Mario
