The term Graphic Novel was coined in the 1970s to refer to a new kind of comic book: actual comic BOOKS. These were stand-alone, non-serialized comic works that didn't restrain themselves to the usual twenty-something pages of the typical newsstand publications. With time, this kind of work has grown into an industry of its own, providing creators with an outlet not always available through the bigger publishers and showing just how varied, complex, and truly amazing the medium can be. These are the 100 best graphic novels of all time.

Awesome list as always. It's really telling how the last couple of decades made up a majority of the list. Just the last year alone had some great stories, and I expect we'll continue to see even more in the next few years. Doubly so if we look at it without the parameter of non-serialization. Also, I got a kick out of the classic bgm coming in during the later part of the video. It was a nice double treat haha

Jason's graphic novels (I Killed Adolf Hitler) are very special. The cutting of the board is mostly 2/2/2/2 some times 2/1/2/2 each square is always the same size. The use of the "ligne claire"... It's an experience. I don't know if I liked it or not. It's like nothing else.

A list claiming to be of all time published in 2023 will always miss something. Time doesn’t stop. Furthermore a very anglophone list. May be very American. I miss some European names. But that’s because they have never been translated or were published in slightly bigger albums.

Glad you liked it. Now, while Eisner’s A Contract with God is considered the first graphic novel, there are similar works of non-mainstream comics going as back as the 1920s. I kind of regret not including them, since they are not talked about nearly enough as they should.

I thought 300 was considered a graphic novel?

Graphic novel has become a very loose term. 300 was a limited series, later published in a collected edition, so it doesn’t fit on this list. Same thing with works like Watchmen or the Dark Knight Returns.

From hell was serialized... twice ! And the second time was in recent years, when Eddie Campbell decided to republish it fully colorized. If you want some Alan Moore's graphic novels, there's A small killing with Oscar Zarate, The 49'ers (even if it was clearly conceived as a mini-series), or Lost girls (who started in some anthology, but was finished in the graphic novel form) Early Daniel Clowes' works were all serialized in his very own Eightball. His first graphic novel was Wilson published in 2010 (followed by Patience I think, and last year's Monica). Satrapi's Persepolis and David B's L'ascension du haut-mal ? First published in multiples volumes here in France, so not stricto sensu graphic novels... Anyway, here are some GNs missing in your list : - Violent cases, Signal to noise & Mr Punch by Neil Gaiman and Dave McKean - Black dog & Raptor by Dave McKean - The mystery play by Grant Morrison and Jon J. Muth - Pride of Baghdad by Brian K. Vaughan and Niko Henrichon - Stuck rubber baby by Howard Cruse - Kurt Vonnegut's Slaughterhouse five by Ryan North and Albert Monteys - Solid state by Jonathan Coulton, Matt Fraction and Albert Monteys - The nao of brown by Glyn Dillon - The X'ed out trilogy by Charles Burns - all the recent graphic novels by Ed Brubaker and Sean Phillips (My heroes have always been junkies probably being the best of the bunch) - Monsters by Barry Windsor-Smith - It's lonely at the centre of the Earth by Zoe Thorogood (It was published late 2022) And I know it was published in 2023, but i highly recommend the excellent Ducks by Kate Beaton

Good list! Was a little bit surprised to not see Daytripper or Berlin on it, though.

They weren’t included for being serialized works, while the list deals with standalones or at most two-parters. But Daytripper is included in the Vertigo video. And Berlin in the independent comics video. 😉

@@comicbelief Man, Daytripper is awesome! Definitely on my personal top 10. Btw... If you are going to exclude all serialized works, shouldn't you exclude Maus as well? It was serialized from 1980 to 1991, and later published as a collected edition. Persepolis was originally published in four volumes. Ghost World was originally released between the issues 11-18 of Eightball Epileptic was originally published in French by L'Association in six volumes from 1996 to 2003... I'm pretty sure there are least a few other serialized series in this video as well... I can understand wanting to avoid superhero comics, or long running series in general, but... If you restrict this list to works that have never been serialized, you will end up having to exclude A LOT of stuff. That aside, it seems like a good selection! I've probably only read around 20% or 25% of it, which means I got a pretty long list of reading recommendations for my vacation. Thanks!
