Great to see it or hear it in action. A radio from the days where folk took the low tension battery to the radio shop to be recharged every week.

According to the manual, the batteries should be good for a month... and you could buy a charger and even a power supply but those were expensive.

@@PlaywithJunk I expect there were houses that did not have mains electricity except for a ceiling lamp in each room. It's the low tension or heater battery that takes all the hard use. Would be interesting to see how much current the heaters are taking?
@PlaywithJunk8 ай бұрын
@@TheEmbeddedHobbyist Oh... I can tell you that. All 4 tubes, when the heater pot is on maximum, take about 250mA at 4V. That's 60-70 mA per tube. But since you reduce the heater current for operation, it's much less. The tubes are working almost instantly because there is no additional cathode to be heated. And they don't get hot like 1960's tubes. Just a bit warm.... 🙂I had to glue two tubes into their sockets and I feared the glue could burn away but no problem so far.

Thanks for the heads up regarding the possibility of the USB cable being wired incorrectly. (Good advice 👍👍)

Congratulations for getting it running, which took a lot of work.

Actually not so much. Only to find the correct power supply was a bit tricky.

Nice trip down the memory lane. I even remember when you had to buy the "control" sticker for the PTT at the time. There would have to be still an active station maybe in nearby Germany? Or all far away France or somewhere in the East? I am sure back in 2009 we picked up the last remaining long wave station whilst travelling in a rental car thru France. Now Joe Biden is going to mandate that all cars sold in the US have to be retro fitted to get back AM reception. Apparently the station lobby argues it is for emergency broadcasts. I am also surprised seeing Saba drawing the resistors the American way. Using batteries sure saved construction money eliminating most fixed capacitors.

Using batteries made sense because in 1926 not everyone had electricity at home. My father once told me that they got electricity in the 1930's With another radio I even received an US station but I'm not sure if it was shortwave or medium...

Still strange to read „low loss“ in a 100 years old schematic from rural Germany.

"Made in Baden" as written on the capacitors. Yes it's interesting how modern they were in 1926.

@@PlaywithJunk I really wish u had not told me that. LOL I want something old and cool just like that sooooo badly. Its got like the perfect stuff in it. The big green coils and the tubes, the knobs and gradicule. When I saw that radio in person oh my goodness. It to me was worth the asking price but id never in a million years be able to afford it. I guess I should figure out where there are flea markets. Never been to the radio ones the hans hold sometimes. I need to get up there fr fr. I might find some treasure. Even broken. I can fix anything. Soon ill even be fixing broken tubes i hope. Especially since im the type who keeps knocking nipples off of crts and other tubes. Hearing ur amber cry suck air is enough to make a man cry. Lol The minute i get done making something to hook a vacuum pump to a thin glass tube, ill be in business. Thanks for reminding me. Ida forgot for another month ha

Is that a radio clock sitting on the shelf?
@PlaywithJunk8 ай бұрын
Do you mean that LED clock thing? No that's just a clock I built many years ago and changed the display a few times. Now it has TIL311 displays which I find pretty cool.

What material is the face plate made from?

It's made of hard rubber with a texture that looks like fur 🙂
