The one huge issue I know with A LOT of artists and this method is that they didn't sign up to be content creators... they practiced and worked their behinds off for years on their musicianship so now having to be some top notch sketch writer for instagram/tik Tok vids just to be appreciated is soul destroying... I think a lot of artists I know would prefer the long road, the smaller audiences, less money and recognition if they didn't feel they had to do some fake X factor audition type video sketch on socials every time they wanted to release music. For the people that DO feel comfortable doing vids and sketches like this, it's amazing advice. To those that don't, just realize that it's gonna take way longer, but you'll get there eventually.

Yes, the reality is we might as well be watching a video on how to be struck by lighting twice. Its the same likelyhood of you getting a viral video moment let alone repeating it more than once. And if Everyone learned how to do it, guess what, it would even more difficult to get a viral moment.

I agree. I was always against the obsession with videos because music is audio, not videos. But here we are in 2024, and I still hate making videos, but I try. I'll never make videos for the low IQ til tok style content, though.
@quasiwipeout6 сағат бұрын
I agree with everything you said except the last thing. I don't really believe that most of us will get there, ever. It's all about potential and the powers in control want young, gorgeous, talented and supremely marketable dupes. If you're a genius and an insane talent then maybe you'll break through, but otherwise, good luck. (btw... shockingly, lol, the industry is a filthy monopoly - always has been - and there should be regulation including anti-trust and monopoly litigation against all the enemies of art, creativity and individualism. Ticketmaster ain't the only demon here, the govt. needs to pursue these unlawful, cheating, crooked, thieving bastards and create some kind of a musician's union/guild for artists to thrive and be heard. Like that's gonna happen?! lol

Man I gave up on tiktok when I had a friend who got herself 100k+ followers teaching me to blow up on there and I stopped trying entirely when I ended up dancing to a country song in a storm troopers mask and Sombrero. The mask and Sombrero were admittedly my choice, but you gry what I'm saying 🤣

Damien just unwittingly explained why rock is dead. These days, everyone is so busy trying to be things _other_ than rock musicians, in the hopes that their weird stunts and personal lives will get engagement for their music... but their music just doesn't stand up to the classics, because they're not spending the time to develop their songwriting and their talents. Modern social-media culture turned all the rock musicians into influencers, and as a result, there are no rock musicians left.

Indie rock bands and musicians are still alive, if you are ready to listen…

Just because rock doesn't dominate the industry anymore doesn't mean the genre has disappeared. It's still around, there's still good rock music being made, and the artists making rock music can still build careers and be successful. It's just about adapting to the changing landscape, staying true to yourself and being consistent. Aim for reasonable goals and achieve them one by one. That's what I reckon. But, just to say, what you've said makes sense and there is truth in it.

as a south american metal band who perform its songs in English, do you recommend to have all the content in the singing language or should we first deal with the local costumers in our own first spoken language?
@guitarovich8 сағат бұрын
I think it depends: are you trying to play shows locally/regionally? Then target that audience. For broader social growth, english might be better. You could always post the same content twice with different language text on screen for each or put text in one language at the top of the screen and the other language at the bottom. Building up your local support could also lead to buzz and success in promoting to radio or media. Bless you and good luck

Yeah keep it simple. Watch youtube videos about filming techniques on an iPhone. Lighting and tips on colour grades. Don't overthink or think that paying $5k for a camera will solve all problems. It helps if you have the skills, the same way as a 1960's Telecaster is only going to help in the hands of a good player. If you want to spend money, think about lighting first, a stand or mount for the camera etc The real effort should go into you the artist, the emotion, the hook and the continual improvement :) Hope that helps

I hear only content, content, content. I couldn't imagine genius weirdos such as Aphex Twin or Mike Oldfield doing braincell destructing Tik Tok short form portrait format video "content". Even as a fan of artists a lot of their social media activity is just redundant and annoying for me and makes me wanna unsubscribe them. Why not just completely quit the music thing and be just an influencer and show some overpriced product placement Gucci crap in front of the camera?
@DamianKeyes3 сағат бұрын
I feel your frustration, I really do. And I don't want to be pretending that this is ideal for artists. But I know it works and I know it's tough to get people to go to gigs, or to finance enough in ads, get record deals etc. This is a way that an artist can play the system, keep control of their music and masters and build an audience/fanbase to monetize and enjoy opportunities. But I promise you, i feel your pain, I also have to make content weekly, play the game, get trolled etc but what if in that pain, there are real people who genuinely discover you, your music and your talent. Then fall in love with it. Is this not a game worth playing in some way?

Maybe its an introvert / extrovert thing. TikTok videos are for me the internet equivalent to smalltalk which isn't my strength. I have no issues talking hours about some topic I am into and I like to listen to hours long video essays / podcasts / interviews. @@DamianKeyes

Ok Damian, good video but what about older artists, & I do mean older? The promos you used were all young, very attractive people. How does an old man who's seen better days go about creating interesting content? No band or money $$$ to promote, looks long gone, having to resort to using technology (samples, loops, AI etc.) to create. I hate Spotify & TikTok and what they've done to reduce the tolerance & intelligence of the listening public and to further destroy the value of the "artist!" Music is free, artists are responsible to create our own audience and buzz. Only then will the monopolies I mentioned above, as well as the Big 3 labels and other streaming ogres like YT, FB, IG etc., pay some attention. How the hell are we supposed to make a dent?
@iamjordanpass5 сағат бұрын
Stop playing the “why me?!” card and get making content. Now more than ever we have every chance to find our audience because we have instant access to them now without having to take a taxi to ever city to either busk or gig or sell CDs. There’s an OAP rap group in the UK called Pete and Bas and they’re embracing the social media side, they have a team and they’re breaking through. Just. Make. The. Content.
