The 126-year fight to change Mississippi’s Confederate flag

On November 3, 2020, Mississippi voters finally adopted a state flag that represents the diversity of the state.

For 126 years, Mississippi’s state flag prominently featured the Confederate battle emblem in its design. That emblem is the most enduring and recognizable symbol of the American Civil War, a four-year conflict in which Southern states fought to preserve slavery in the United States.
Since then, the symbol has been used as a banner of Southern pride but is also widely used by white supremacists to honor a time when Black Americans were enslaved. Activists in Mississippi have protested the state flag for decades, and it almost changed in 2001, when an alternative design was presented but failed to get enough votes to replace the old one.
After the 2015 massacre of nine Black churchgoers in South Carolina and the uprising in 2020 in response to the murder of George Floyd, Mississippi’s legislature finally abolished the state flag bearing the Confederate emblem. On November 3, 2020, Mississippi voters approved a new flag design that’s more inclusive and reflective of the people across the state.

Slavery was the bedrock of the south. Unlike the north, the south didn’t have fancy industries and wasn’t in an industrial revolution. The slaves were their bedrock. When that was taken away, the south faced economic downfall. They managed to recover today, and now the horrors of racism are ending, but at what cost? Post-Civil War south was chaos!

The Japanese imperial emblem is a flower, whose monarch many people swore to protect. The meaning of a flower follows its context and I think Mississippi's one did it nicely.

It has it's own political history, It isn't the official motto of the U.S., and the goverment isn't supposed to favor any religious belifes over any other (that includes lack there of). The founding fathers may have been desists but they were firmly for seperation of church and state. The only reason we have it was because it was added later durring the cold war and just as I am against the goverment favoring atheists and persecuting theists I am also against the opposite. The goverment should be secular end of story not have religious ceremonies make it defacto Christian.
