Considering that Spain and the rest of the Iberia was conquered and occupied by Arab and African Moors , it is not a stretch for a Spaniard playing an Arab diplomat from that time frame on history. Also I think that this is interesting because this movie depicts Tribal Europe as it was until relatively recent times. The book Eaters Of The dead by Michael Crichton is basically the real life account of what happened in the Epic Of Beowulf. People don't really associate Europe with having so called Tribal or "primitive " societies. But there are actually societies that exits in Europe to this day that would be considered as "tribal". Particularly in North East Central Europe. And BTW Tribal does not mean that these people are no less intelligent or cultured. It just means that they are not a part of modern society. Like the Amish here in America. They could be considered a tribal society. But there is a lot of respect for the Amish in America.
