I know this video is old but I just wanted to tell you how encouraging this is. I have a seven week old little boy and have been struggling with my supply since basically the beginning. I feel guilty for not being able to breast feed and when I pump I get discouraged because the amount isn’t enough for a feeding session. I want to quit but my husband and mom don’t want me to. My mom is more “you have to!! I did, you’re just not trying hard enough” while my husband is more “ you got this babe, just keep trying.” Either way I don’t think either of them understands how fucking draining and stressful it is. So thank you for this video. It was exactly what I needed to hear

I wasn't producing enough for my son born May 7th, 2019. The hospital pump didnt seem to help. Till I learned that the likelyhood of getting any colostrum was slim with the breast pump was slim, well was in my case, so once started fhand expressing the colostrum it took about a day and a half and now my milk is finally in. Now the pump can be used to build my supply as my son has gotten used to the bottle.

Hi guys I just had my baby a week ago. I couldnt find real answer to this question so hopefully you can help me out. My milk came 4 days ago and I have been pumping very 2.5 hours during day for 15 min and 3 hours during night for 20 min. I an making about 4-5 oz per session and I have not emptied my breasts. My question is do I really need to empty my breasts now since I kept getting engorged and I worry the engorgement stage will never go away....I read from many resources that engorgement stage should only last 2-3 days and mine has been day 4 and I feel like it will never go away. Could I be doing something wrong? Some recommend to relieve engorgement you only should pump a little out...but most EPing videos tell me to try to empty my breasts so I am so confused...
@michaelaleach81953 жыл бұрын
Once your milk supply regulates (mine was around 10 weeks) you can drop your nighttime pump. I dropped my middle of the night session at this point, plus my baby was mostly sleeping through the night so she wouldn’t have been “nursing” anyway. It was a bit uncomfortable at first but I was able to pump 15-17oz on my morning pump. Keep in mind I was not nursing at all.
@bethanytherrell77992 жыл бұрын
So relieving to hear this about the amount you’re getting at morning pumps. My baby (and I ) am very sleepy so she eats like every hour and I just can’t handle that mentally or physically…. So I’ve been mostly exclusively pumping for a little over a week now. She still loves feeding, she just falls asleep so comfortably and fast on the boob, which also had tanked my supply for a little bit and she wasn’t gaining weight well on after birth. She’s 10 weeks old so I’m hoping to go another 4 weeks and then drop one of my pumps to see what happens with my supply I’d like to get down to 5 or 6 pumps per day. Right now I’m pumping 7 times per day

Thank You! I needed this! I'm a mom of two. The first one I did not breastfeed because I know nothing about it and it's gone before my baby one months old. So yeah she didn't get breastmilk but formula. And for my second child now I'm exclusively pump and sometimes I did nurse him. But most of the time I pump. Still working on it because my breastmilk supply not much. I wish I have lot of stash for my baby. My baby is 2 months old now. And I only produce milk about 400-500ml a day. And that's not enough to feed my baby. So yeah. I still use formula when there's not enough milk. Because I don't want to stress myself. So whenever I don't have enough breastmilk I'll give him formula and pump my best for the next feeding.

Alia, I’m a mother of 5 2 which are under 2. I’m always crazy busy with my kids. I have exclusively breastfed all of my kids until this point. My son is 3 months old and my midwife said he had a tongue/lip tie. I took him to 3 dentist and 2 lactation consultants which all said he didn’t. During this time I was so stressed he wasn’t getting enough. So I started pumping and I barely get anything out. I need any advice I can get I’m in excruciating pain while pumping and my son refuses the breast now.

Just want to say thank you so so much for making this. I’m having a lot of issues feeding due to edema in my right nipple, both nipples are flat/almost inverted, and my milk has taken awhile to come in (approaching day 5) I have been supplementing because feeding has been ROUGH. I know I’m making excuses but it has been so so hard. For expense sake, I planned on breastfeeding and pumping at least for the first 5-6 months. I just want to say it is a blessing that there are people who can help with pumping exclusively. A lot of people have made comments to me like “what’s the point thats extra work” but I will do what I can to make sure my newborn son gets the best milk for him, even if it is pumped instead of through nursing. @MommaAlia3 жыл бұрын
Happy to help momma! Ideally you’d want to pump however often your little one is nursing. If you’re exclusively pump then trying to stick to your schedule as close to possible is ideal. However I know depending on the situation it can be difficult so I would to try to pump as often as you can even if you don’t empty. Typically you always want to empty but pumping more often rather than waiting an extended time relays messages to your body that you still need the milk it’s producing. As far as the amount I think every kiddo is different and it typically is more weight and amount of feedings than just age. Kelly Mom has some really great articles that may help you make a judgement on that!

Hi, i just wanted to say that i love this video. I have been exclusively pumping since my daughter was 3 days old. I will honestly say it was a hard thing for me. I am lucky to have a very hands on and supportive husband but in my mind i felt like i was failing my daughter. She never really latched on completely. Since this is my second child i did know what it should feel like. When we were at the hospital the latational specialists said just to keep working on it. This was extremely stressing to me. Plus she was not really have wet diapers and that made me nervous. On day 3 i became engorged and she would not latch at all for 3 hours me and my husband (he is really helpful and tries what the latactional specialist taught us.) tried to get her to latch. I was in tears and i decided i was going to pump and give her a bottle.she took it right away and i will be honest it kind 9f upset me even though i was happy she was eating. After that first full bottle she actually made a full wet diaper. To me that proved that she was not eating enough. That night upset and a little worried. I did a lot of research about exclusively pumping and found a website called exclusivelypumping.com. it helped a lot i have tried to breastfeed but she has never actautly pumped. I started pumping every 2 hours for 20-30 mins. Now i pump 3 or 4 times a day for 40 minutes. This is really because i produced so much. Early on i have a stock pill. And am taking the sleep advantage. For me exclusively pumping really works my daughter will be 4 months soon and she is drink breastmilk only. I say do what works for you. I decided to pump because she didnt latch and honestly it made me so anxious. Just remember you have to make the decision that works for you and your baby.

SquirrelBeautyFustrations I know this is a year old comment but hoping you will see it. When you said you would initially pump every 2 hours for 20-30 minutes, would milk come out the entire duration? Meaning the entire 20-30 minutes? Right now I'm pumping for 10 minutes but I only get milk for the first 3-4 minutes.
@umamadmalik3 жыл бұрын
But Google says...u should calculate from when u Start to pump...like of u pump at 7.. next pump at 9... not 9:30 coz it took 30mins to pump in the previous schedule. Please clarify!

Do whatever you’re more comfortable with. I have timed from the end of the session since I ever exclusively pumped almost 7 years ago. Through 3 journeys I’ve kept doing it and it’s never done me wrong. Always go with whatever you feel more comfortable with, that’s just my advice!

How long does it take to see an increase in milk supply after starting to pump every 2-3 hours?
@MommaAlia5 жыл бұрын
You’ll want to do that consistently, while pumping until empty (or past empty if you need an increase in supply) for at least 2 weeks before you should see a slow, gradual increase. The longer you stick with the schedule and everything else, the more you should see results! If not, there may be other factors inhibiting supply so it would be time to troubleshoot! But try not to worry about results until you got that 2 week mark!

How hard is it going to be to EP with a toddler? She will be 3 when baby is due and I’m afraid I won’t have enough time in a day to pump, feed baby, wash bottles, feed toddler and feed myself :/
@MommaAlia3 жыл бұрын
It is hard! I won’t lie and say it’s easy. It’ll take time to find your rhythm but I promise it does come. Feeding and hydrating everyone is too priority so if pumping needs to wait 30 minutes while you do that, so be it! I would try to save washing bottles/pump parts for a time of day like nap/bed time when you have time to yourself. Or better yet if you have a partner or someone willing to help, don’t be afraid to ask them to do those for you! It’s tricky finding your footing and overwhelming at times, but it should get easier. Idk if you’re on Instagram but I am and you can message me literally any time! Happy to be here to listen to whatever you need or chat if you’d like it!🤍

How do you make a schedule? Let's say you wake up at 7am do you go from that every 2-3hrs all the time? I'm soo confused!
@MommaAlia5 жыл бұрын
You’ll wanna base it around when you wake up. But it does depend on how many weeks postpartum you are. If you’re under 12 weeks, you’ll want to make sure to be pumping around the clock. So say you get up at 7 AM, you’ll do your first morning pump then. You start the 2-3 hour timer for the next pump when you finished your most recent pump session. So if you get done at 7:30 AM, you’ll want to pump again at 9:30-10:30. And keep going so forth. Once you reach late night hours you can stretch it to 3-4 hours so you can get more sleep. Once you’re over 12 weeks postpartum you can drop some middle of the night pumps if it helps you out. I personally kept them around for awhile but I know others feel better dropping them. Just make sure you do it slowly because you may lose some ounces off your supply. Hope this makes sense! If you need more personal help making a schedule give me an email, it’s in the description box!

Only if you have a full-term, healthy baby. I did that with my oldest but with my youngest I had enough parts to get me through an entire day and i liked that a lot more. It was more parts to clean when I did dishes but I liked that they were 100% clean every time I went to pump.

Ah so sorry to hear that momma! Use a warm compress before pumping along with some massage. Make sure you have the correct flange size and your suction level is high enough to pull out milk without causing pain at the same time. Afterwards you can use a cold compress to help with the pain. You’ll want to pump as often as she was feeding and pump until you’re breasts are soft and squishy. I hope this helps until she’s back to nursing!

For the past couple of days my 7 week old does not want to breastfeed. He's so smart, when I bring him close to my breast to feed he immediately starts crying and poses me away 😭😥. I think it's cause he likes the bottle better. I've been supplementing with formula because I don't produce enough milk for him. So I think he just prefers the bottle. Since this is happening I want to pump and bottle feed it to him. So my question is, for how long should I be pumping? Right now I'm pumping for 10 minutes. The first 3-4 minutes is when I actually get milk out ( 1 ounce) and the rest of the 6 minutes nothing come out. I see people saying they pump for 20-30 minutes. Are they getting milk out the entire time 20-30 minutes? Please help 😞
@MommaAlia5 жыл бұрын
Hey momma! So sorry to hear you’re going through a tough time😔 Please know you’re not alone and breastfeeding complications is something a lot of mommas go through💕 I would check the flow rate on the bottle. If you can tip it over and milk/formula even drips out, it’s too fast. Babies have to work at the breast to get milk so you want to try to replicate that with the bottle. Otherwise they can favor the bottle because it’s easier. As for your pumping question you’ll need to pump every 2-3 hours daily and 3-4 nightly for the first 12 weeks. Start your timer for the next session at the end of your current one. If you are making enough for him, pumping until you are empty (breasts should be soft and squishy) should be enough. If you aren’t making enough for him and would like to, pump for about 10 minutes after that soft and squishy empty point. That’ll encourage a high milk demand and after 1-2 weeks you should see a slow, gradual increase. Every woman pumps for different amounts of time, it’s definitely not one size fits all. Most things with breastfeeding aren’t! I hope this helps momma!💕

Can pumping with a manual pump every 2 hours help?
@mallorikerr40925 жыл бұрын
It depends on your body. I have a friend who couldn't get hardly anything with an electric pump but had better response with the manual one. Me I needed to hand Express the first few days to get my breasts to release the milk that's transitioning between colostrum and regular breast milk.
@MommaAlia5 жыл бұрын
It can. Everyone responds differently to different pumps. But as long as you make sure you’ve got all your usual pumping guidelines in check (flange size, massage, emptying every session, comfort, etc) it’s worth a shot!

You’re still breastfeeding through exclusively pumping momma! The discoloration and swelling is normal, it’s from the suction of the pump. What wouldn’t be normal is blebs, white nipples, actual pain (not just discomfort) or burning. Those are a sign things are as they should. I highly recommend you get your flange sized so you have the correct one and lube the tunnel with some kind of oil (like coconut or olive). Also, start your suction low and gradually work your way upwards. You want your suction level to be strong enough to pull out milk but not so much so that you’re in pain. Hope this helps!

Hi Alia I just had my baby a week ago. I couldnt find real answer to this question so hopefully you can help me out. My milk came 4 days ago and I have been pumping very 2.5 hours during day for 15 min and 3 hours during night for 20 min. I am making about 4-5 oz per session and I have not emptied my breasts. My question is do I really need to empty my breasts now since I kept getting engorged and I worry the engorgement stage will never go away....I read from many resources that engorgement stage should only last 2-3 days and mine has been day 4 and I feel like it will never go away. Could I be doing something wrong? Some recommend to relieve engorgement you only should pump a little out...but most EPing videos tell me to try to empty my breasts so I am so confused...My breasts hurt when they are engorged.

I realize this is an old, video but I have a very random question I thought you might be able to answer. Do exclusive pumpers still have spontaneous letdowns? I started my BF Journey exclusively pumping for the first month.. then one day about 4 weeks in my baby decided to latch very comfortably. I attempted to BF at the breast for two days and suddenly my supply is wayyy too much for me to handle and I am having spontaneous letdowns. I was on a 3 hour pumping schedule while EPing and never had a spontaneous letdown.
@Babies0smell0funny4 жыл бұрын
Kelsie Gonzalez intresting observation, my right side has occasional let downs (i EP) but i assume the higher oxytocin levels when directly breastfeeding will affect your let downs as you get to cuddle, stare into eachother eyes etc which is missing when pumping

I've been exclusively pumping for my 3-month-old. My problem is that my supply keeps increasing. Started out pumping every 2 hours and averaged about 55 ounces per day. Then I decided to pump every 3 hours, which increased my daily output to about 65 ounces. My little girl eats a daily average of 32 ounces, which means more than half is going in the deep freezer. So, I switched to pump every 3.5-4 hour but that further increased my supply to 72 ounces per day. What can I do?? Thanks!
@MommaAlia6 жыл бұрын
I would stay at the 3.5-4 hour range for now. You'll need to give your body a couple of weeks to adjust to new habits. It sounds like it just hasn't caught on to what you're asking of it yet. With time, it will slowly go down(: If it's been a month with no change I would see an LC and start shaving some time off a couple pump sessions so you're not emptying as normal. But that should be a last resort because you don't want your supply to plummet because not enough time was given for it to gradually decrease. Good luck momma!

Thank you so much for making these videos. FTM here to my IVF miracle. I always told myself to be open to our feeding journey. She ended up being 6 weeks early and in the nicu. She had donor milk then needed formula, which I was okay with, bc my supply never caught up. On top of BP meds and csection recovery, my supply is slowly going up. I’m 6 weeks PP and still working to get my supply up and maybe BF is we can get Her latch right. Starting the timer at the end of a session is new to me at 6 weeks PP. and honestly it’s kinda relieving. I feel like all I do is pump and feed. It’s a lot! At the beginning I cried so much bc my supply was so low. I didn’t think I’d be so emotionally attached to providing milk for her. We will see how my journey goes ❤️❤️❤️ thank you for these videos ❤️❤️❤️

Is it normal to only feel a let down when breastfeeding ? I've now been pumping exclusively but I never get a let down, milk just comes out slowly first and then a good flow comes. I'm using the medela pump n style. Am I doing anything wrong? Any suggestions? I'm also thinking about getting the lansinoh...you gave such an awesome review. Is it as loud as the medela? Medela always wake my baby
@MommaAlia6 жыл бұрын
It could be your pump isn’t stimulating you the way it should be. Make sure your flanges are sized and your suction level is right. There’s Facebook groups or I can size you by email, whatever is easier! I would see if you could increase the suction some. But if it’s painful, turn it back down to your usual setting. The Lansinoh could be worth a try! I love mine and it always did an amazing job. Also try your let down or two phase expression button! It’ll pump at a higher frequency than usual to help stimulate a let down😊

Momma Alia yes please fit me. I tried looking online for guidance in flange fit but not sure if I did it right. I also tried using the coconut oil inside the flanges like you suggested.

Ive been reading alot of people are having issues with the medela. I had the same issue. I just could barely get any milk out I bought a spectra on amazon to give it another shot. It is really nice and proved to me that i did have more milk than i thought.I still have the medela as a backup but havent quite figured out how to make it work for me. I bought smaller flanges a couple days ago to see if that is the case and i found out WIC can test it to see if medela is getting the right suction

I’m 5wpp and was wondering when you leave the house for an extended period of time. Do you warm the breast milk that you bring from the refrigerator & plan on feeding your baby? What should I do? I know I should bring a cooler and ice packs. For ex: I plan on being out of the house for 6 hrs and my daughter is on a every 3 hr feeding schedule.
@MommaAlia6 жыл бұрын
Oh I didn't leave the house for months hahaha. I liked to feed baby before we left with whatever milk at home. I would also pump right before we left. I would pack that bottle just in the side of our diaper bag because it's good for 3-4 hours at room temp and I found that to be true with my milk. Then at the three hour mark I would feed my daughter the fresh bottle then pump after that and continue the cycle. Any extra milk I would put in the freezer bag like you mentioned!
@MariaLopez-qk3qs6 жыл бұрын
Does the setting on the pump matter? I read to keep it at the lowest setting if you’re exclusively pumping because it mimics baby sucking. Thank you very much.

Thank you for all these info. Im 19days postpartum and exclusively pumping.. would like to ask if its normal to have extremely sensitive nipples..? To a point where I just dont want to wear anything. Even sleeping sideways is troublesome at times.
@MommaAlia6 жыл бұрын
Happy to help momma! It can be normal since you're only 19 days postpartum however I would be a little proactive to make sure it's nothing else. Use some APNO on your nipples *after* you get done pumping. This will help heal them and hopefully keep any thrush at bay. Just apply it a couple times a day. After other pump sessions use a nipple balm to help soothe them. The Earth Mama brand is really good! Also the gel soothie pads made by Lansinoh, those could help a lot too! If it keeps up after a week or two more, or gets worse I'd reach out to an IBCLC!

How much should be pumping in bottle for near month old
@MommaAlia5 жыл бұрын
That would depend on baby's weight, age and amount of feeds per day. If you reacch out to a local IBCLC she can give you an estimate. But the normal amount to pump would be as much as baby eats (: (if baby is being supplemented with formula that wouldn't apply since babies consume more formula than breastmilk)

I was able to more than double my supply and I was pumping about 20-30 ml every three hours. Things that I think helped me were power pumping, also my baby is a very weak performer at the breast. He can remove some milk but not enough to gain weight or satisfy himself but I would put him on the breast between pumping sessions before his bottle feed and I think this helped a lot. I still have to supplement with about 4 ounces of formula a day but saw a massive increase in supply so don’t give up. Try to aim for 8 or more pumps in a 24 hour period too.

Also, I meant to mention this before I submitted my previous comment, I am a mama that nurses, pumps and supplements my 3 month old baby because I have a low milk supply, in mornings I can go from 2.5-3.25 oz in total from both breasts and lowest is about 1oz total both breast each pump and my pump sessions usually last about 20-35 minutes. I feel like when I pump it can take long to empty and I massage bc normally I don't use hands free pump bra. I recently went back to work this week and bought a hands free pump bra for that and I don't want to be pumping that long at work. Is there a way to be able to pump for a shorter time but be able to empty out breast? I've heard some EP mamas pumping for only 10 minutes on their pump breaks at work, I personally don't think that's good bc I don't want to get clogged ducts and don't want to lessen my supply. I do have to say that sometimes I miss my next pump time especially at night bc my baby stays up all night she was a premie, 6 weeks early, so corrected age is 2 months at the moment. Thank you for your help! Sorry so long winded.

+Andrea Egoavil I would look into some lecithin as long as you don’t have a history of depression. It’s an herbal supplement that can help you empty faster. Also a warm compress and hitting the letdown button while looking at pictures/video of your little one or distracting yourself can help a lot!(:
@A_ChocChip_Eggo6 жыл бұрын
Momma Alia hi! Hope your day is going great! yes, today I was just thinking of taking lecithin supplements. Sometimes I'm apprehensive when it comes to taking supplements but it seems to help some mothers to breastfeed and avoid clogged milk ducts. I've been doing massages and heat for that. I would love to do warm compresses at work but I try to make sure I'm not taking too long. Sad. But I'll definitely try your suggestions. (No history of depression).

Hey momma! The good news is is that there are plenty of breastfeeding moms who are pregnant. Supply during pregnancy is a very personal thing so just because one mom experiences it, doesn’t mean the next will! There’s a chance you could have no problem at all.
