Nice interrogation tactic at the end of the video! :) My knitting friend once started talking about difficulties of shopping for shoes of her big size, asked what my shoe size is and if I have the same problem. An ordinary conversation it seems but as a result she gave me a pair of hand-knitted socks! I wasn't a knitter at the time and such a thoughtful gift was like magic to me. So I think that subtly asking in a friendly conversation is the best! Thanks for the video.

Thanks so much, Norman! I’m a Secret Santa coming in a few months, and this is a lifesaver because I know my person is a knitter. Particularly the personalized gift tags (because we are to give several smaller gifts over a few days.) One suggestion I’d give (cause I’d love it as an avid reader as well) is a gift card for audio books. Some knitting is just not TV friendly! Or you’re somewhere where you can’t “watch” something but you can listen to it. I love to read (not all knitters do, of course,) so audio books are great for when I’m working on a complex project but like hearing a book read to me as well. (Quite frankly, its a fantastic way to spend a lazy, grey Sunday afternoon with the fireplace going!)

Hi Norman, I’ve been a knitter for nearly 60 years and I found all of your suggestions to be spot on. I especially appreciated the last one - I love nothing better than the opportunity to talk about knitting and what it means to me. Another gift suggestion for any knitter is a pair of really sharp tiny scissors. I like to have a pair in every bag. One more suggestion for us older knitters - a lightweight magnifying glass. I have one that can hang around my neck. It’s so helpful for tiny stitches or dark yarn. Thank you for making such lovely videos.

Recently, my daughter in law has caught on to crafty gifts for me. I think buying knitting needles is a great idea. Even the wrong brand needle can come in very handy for knitters who have multiple WIPs going. I'd been wondering about the wearable crafter's light, so I'm glad you're recommending it. I tend to stay away from black and other dark yarns, because the stitches are hard for me to see, and I end up splitting the yarn a lot. A few other gift ideas: knitter's balm for dry cracked fingers, ball winder, sock blockers, pattern holder.

I’ve had friends and family get me gifts for my various hobbies (photography, quilting, sewing, and knitting and crocheting) over the years. It does take the “surprise element” out of the picture, but I prefer to receive something I really want or need with my hobbies. With that said, being rather particular, I just make it easy for my friends and family and have a “running wish list” on Amazon. I do prefer to support my local stores. And, when people are traveling around this great world of ours, they often bring me fabric or yarn from other countries. I’m gracious with receiving their thoughtful gift (especially since they took up valuable real estate in their luggage to haul it back!).

As I knitter and crochet, I've gotten yarn gifts from people who don't know the first thing about knitting. I ended up getting yarn from people that I hated the color and its the kind of yarn I'll never use in a million years . The yarn ended up being thrown out. I've gotten knitting needles that were total garbage and those where thrown out, too. A gift card to their favorite craft store or their favorite online store is always a good choice, especially when you don't know 100% sure of what they want. Just make sure that the gift card has more than a measley $5 to it. Yarn can cost of $20 or more. Talk with the knitter/crochet and see what they want or what they use. If you are planning to buy yarn, talk to the knitter/crochet and see what their favorite type of project they like making, like socks, sweaters or blanket. Then buy enough yarn for a whole project. Socks take about 3 to 4 balls of yarn. Sweaters take at least 1,000 yards or more. Blanket is about 2,000 yards or more.

@@NimbleNeedles I was going to mention it as well. Could you share the pattern and/or the type(weight) of yarn used? My covid hair is no joke.

@@Enig_Mata it's a free pattern available on my blog called Mütze 2 in some fingering cashmere yarn. I thankfully got a haircut last week. Fiiiiinallly

@@NimbleNeedles Thank you! I'll have to check it out - I like the simplicity and elegance of it. So excited for the yarn you mentioned. I just found out about colourmart in the UK that sells cashmere yarn in cones and placed my first order. Of course this is yarn that's supposedly used my high-end clothing designers so it does not come in the standard skein/hank and requires some care before wear. However, I am intrigued by the versatility of it - turned lace-weight into dk and holding different color strands for a unique color. I'll have to make the hat my first project.

@@Enig_Mata that definitely sounds interesting. Do share a picture once it's done 😉

Just bought one of those lights. Be good for dark yarn and knitting in twilight. Those yarn bowls are not good. I've got a yarn Jeannie.

I love your blue beanie! What color and what type of yarn did you use? I would like to make one just like it as a gift. Love your videos!

I don't have a pattern for it. or rather it is a mixture of this pattern: nimble-needles.com/patterns/free-cashmere-hat-knitting-pattern-mutze-2/ But I folded the brim. and the crown from this pattern: nimble-needles.com/tutorials/how-to-knit-a-hat/ yarn is some cashmere yarn from Pascuali. Couldn't tell you the color yet but the yarn is linked in the pattern.

These are wonderful gifts not only for friends but for myself too! 😅 I have a question: aside from knitting socks and doing samples for you video demos, what else can you use DPNs for?
@NimbleNeedles2 жыл бұрын
you can knit basically everything with dpns. in the centuries before this one, most people knitted sweaters on long dpns because there simply weren't any circulars.
@deliabottoms2852 жыл бұрын
Thank you Norman! I noticed in a few videos that you use multi colored wooden DPNs. What do you like about them? And where did you buy them?

What is the number one yarn ( price not a factor) for a new born baby’s cap booties and blanket. Thank you.
@NimbleNeedles3 жыл бұрын
that's quite impossible to tell because it really boils down to personal preferences. You might want to check out Pascuali, tho. They are a nice and sustainable luxury yarn producer with lots of organic & certified yarns www.pascuali.de/en/yarns/yarnstyle/baby-yarn

Hi Norman, I enjoyed your blog today. Could you please tell me where to purchase the knitting bowl you showed? Thank you.😊🧶
@NimbleNeedles3 жыл бұрын
I'm afraid, this is an old heirloom. So..sadly there is no place to buy it and I have never seen anything like it. Probably because my late great-grandfather turned it himself. If you search for "antique twine holder" you may find something similar tho. Hope this helps.

Where would I write to you if I have a specific knitting question. Thx.

Hey Anita, I don't answer specific knitting questions via email or DMs. So either comment here or on my blog. That way, other people with the same question get to see my answers as well :)
