Knitting is, all things, considered, a cheap(ish) hobby. You don't need all that many tools to get started. And that's why I typically don't talk too much about knitting tools here on my channel. Yet, I do get a lot of questions about my yarn/needles/etc so in this video, I wanted to share my favorite knitting tools. Things I accumulated in the past 30 years and really came to enjoy. Now, there's absolutely no need to buy the exact same knitting needles, yarn, scissors, and stitch markers that I am using. It all boils down to personal preferences. But the general items, that's certainly something you might want to put in your project bag as well or to use to compile your very own knitting toolkit.

I keep a lotion bar in my bag. It’s wonderful because you don’t get a wet or greasy feel in your hands, but you do get conditioning without mess or worry about leaks.

Thank you for sharing this with us! You know what? I actually don't knit with real knitting needles I just created my own with kebab skewers. I asked my father to do the same for DPNs. I actually have real steel knitting needles but I personally don't like them because they make sounds that drive me crazy. So... I don't like to spend money on easy DIY items.

That is awesome! and i mean...historically speaking, most metal knitting needles were created using wire blanks. So, your method sounds very valid to me!

I went to a Montessori charter school and we would knit and drink tea while listening to audio books. Since the school needed dozens of knitting needles for all of the students we made our own with wood dowels and a pencil sharpener. The pencil sharpener had a variety of hole sizes so we could make needles from different size dowels. Then, we used sandpaper to blunt the tip and smooth out any splinters. Lastly, but most importantly, we rubbed beeswax all over needles to make them slippery and smooth for the yarn to glide over.

I love my chiagoo needles. The noise they make while I'm working is soothing to me. I did alot of research before buying them because I had never had interchangeable knitting needles before and I generally go with low budget options. Your video reviewing them was one of the ones I watched when considering them. Now that I'm so used to them I know I made a good choice

Norman, I love your channel. But I totally agree with Hailey. Chiaogoo are my go-to needles for many reasons, but mostly because the cords don't curl up like Addi cords do. I love the feel of the stainless steel, and I actually *like* that there are different sized cables for large and small needles. The one-size-fits-all approach of Addi needles is the reason they only go down to US4. I know you love Karbonz, but with my set, the tips have come off and there's a irritating scraping noise on some of the sizes that kind of like nails on a chalkboard. But, as you say all the time, what matters is that you find the needles and tools that work best for you. Thanks again for everything you do.

What fun to see what you actually use when doing 'serious' knitting for yourself vs knitting for us. I have several sets of circular needles because they work differently with different yarn combinations - some more slippery than others. And yes, I can be dazzled by the array of scissors out there. When I bought the wool for my first pair of socks (I am on my second pair now and they look much nicer thanks to all the great advice in your videos. =) ), I was very happy to discover that it had its label attached with a stitch marker. A very nice idea from the manufacturer.

Through all my years of test driving lots (and LOTS) of tools, currently I don't leave home without my tin pencil box which houses scissors, stitch markers, needle gauge, end caps, tightener, crochet hook, flat paper row counter, tapestry needles, etc. in short, it holds everything except a tape measure Which I carry loosely in. my bag. I 'm also fond of ruler tape that adheres to patterns which makes for easy measuring. As someone who has occasionally used a pencil or shawl pin as a knitting needle, I agree 100% with your common sense approach to tools.

Another convert to the neck light! Purchased one (based on your recommendation from a few months ago) and goodness, what a difference it makes. I recently had eye surgery (ah yes, age brings on issues with eyes!) and the neck light has been an absolute must now! I've always used Aero brand knitting needles (the metal ones rather than the plastic) as they were what was most common in England when I was growing up, plus I inherited my mum's knitting tools. I recently switched to bamboo needles - even though I was given a complete size set back in the 80s - and have found them easier to use. Less dropped stitches due to arthritic fingers (yarn doesn't slip off so easily), and a lot quieter. Now I can hear my cat purring - he likes to sit on my lap when I knit! Thank you, Norman...you are such a joy to watch and learn from!

Knitting with my kitty nearby is one of my greatest joys. I know its been a year since you made this post but I wanted to ask if you had tried some of the crafting lights sold at Hobbycraft? My favourite is a rechargeable unit that I can adjust to three different light intensities. It’s useful for seeing when I knit but also what different yarns will look like in different light levels. And since its rechargeable I can move it to where I am without being tied to a plug socket. It’s great for when my neck light isn’t quite bright enough.

@@phoenixfire8978 I'm not familiar with Hobbycraft...I live in Canada so a lot of the items that people recommend (mainly US) are not available except through Amazon. The neck light I purchased has been a wonder! Not only for knitting but when I sew or read - it has the 3 different light intensities and is quite lightweight...I've occasionally fallen asleep while reading and so far haven't strangled myself!

@@danutagajewski3330 Hobbycraft is a high street craft store chain in the UK. You can get basic crafting items for okayish prices. Craft lights are one of the items they sell that is competitively priced and really worth the markup brick and mortar stores have to charge compared to online shopping.

Thank you for your sharing of the items you prefer to use. I was amazed at how many of the same things I use. However, my favorite knitting needles are the Kollage square interchangeable knitting needles and the Knitter's Pride square shorties. The first set of interchangeable knitting needles I got was a set of Knitter's Pride acrylic needles, mainly to see if I would like using them. Between my knitting needles and crochet hooks, I would hate to think how much money I have invested in my tools. When I reached 65, I started loom knitting an added knitting looms to my collection. It is a good thing I had such an understanding husband and before he passed away, he added a lot to my collection.

I got one of the neck lights that you suggested and it’s wonderful! I love to use it while watching a show on my iPad in a half dark room while using one of these. It’s extremely easy to see my knitting that way! I liked it’s so much that I bought another one right away just in case something happens to it! I found that if I lie back in the recliner with it on my neck it hurts a lot because I’ve had multiple neck injuries. I don’t think it would affect anybody else like that. So what I did was I just lay it on my chest up by my shoulder and and aim it at my knitting. Works perfectly. This is off topic, but I want you to know how likable you are. Watching you talk about the things that you like was so enjoyable. “It’s not like I am building a rocket“ 😂😂😀🌷

yes, i noticed that as well. Well here is one more tip tho it will be a bit more expensive. There are headlights (like when yuo want to go into a cave or so) that might work better in these circumstances.

I have also enjoyed reading the comments as well, they really illustrated your point that the tools we use, particularly the needles, are a personal preference. I have a set of knit pro interchangeables that I absoluely love but I find that I prefer the control of using wooden dpn's. I love finding out what others prefer and one of my favourite ways of getting new needles is when someone is having a bit of a needle destash and offers me the opportunity to go through what they are getting rid of before they send the rest to the op shop/ thrift shop/second hand store.

For me, knitting needles are one of the biggest keys to how much I enjoy the knitting experience. I was in a Hospital ER once and rather rough looking guys asked me about my crocheting and I could see his whole face and demeanor soften talking about him Mom and good memories. We talked about how Moms used to be and how hard modern life is for Moms. It was a moment outside ourselves (I was in a hospital ER after all), and to think about nice parts of our lives. Thank you for this video. And thank you for the balanced advice you give alongside showing your favourites. I have not bought any interchangeables. I mainly use 2.5 mm and 3.5/4 mm needles and not very often anything else so I don't need a set with a large range of sizes. I do have a few others in the small size range just so I can adjust size to get the right tension for the pattern. But that's it. I do have most sizes in straight needles that I have had for years and now no longer use. It is tempting to buy all the bells and whistles that we see KZbinrs using. I am working on this!! I also mostly buy locally produced yarns. Important to reduce carbon footprint.

Very enlightening Norman. I use a bucket as working bag . I covered it with a coat in crochet with a lot of useful pockets on the outside works perfectly. I also liked your mention of Schachenmeyer wolle. It's my favorite brand too and anytime I go to Germany or Austria I stock up enormously Wool is much cheaper in Germany and Austria than in the Netherlands. We have cheap brands here but not the same quality at all. Needles, I only use circular which suit me best. Love your explanation. Good bye my German knitting friend

Love seeing what is in your project bag. I should get one! I have a box of tools and random tote bags with projects and yarn 😂 I need to get some sharp tapestry needles. I love my chiaogoo set of needles but I don’t knit much magic loop yet. I am a fan of shorties for knitting in the round. It suits me really well. Also yes! I love my neck light! Helps so much all the time. Especially during power outages.

The tip about the the neck light was super helpful. Will be so handy in a travel when the light conditions can vary. There were times when I couldn't find a good reading place because the place we rented didn't have good lights for that.

Thanks for making an effort and keeping your reviews neutral, Norman! I watched all your needle reviews and bought a pair of Chiaogoo red lace to try it out... And now I own the whole Chiaogoo collection and they are the only needles I use. I am a continental knitter, tight hands just like you and our yarn and needle size choices are very similar. I apprecite greatly that you have always kept your reviews objective and honest. I am superised that you personally don't like Chiaogoo alll that much -- but it makes perfect sense, because their needles (especially the shorties) are difficult for people with bigger hands. I am happy that you explained things clearly and always give context, or I might get discouraged and missed the chance to meet with my perfect needles :-)

i feel the same! love a lot of vintage stuff. THat being said, a lot of the old stuff lasts so long because the technology was so simple. A modern, computorized sewing machine is a loooot more complex. Tho, admittedly, a lot of people actually don't need it ^^

Good morning from southcentral Kentucky, U.S.A. This video is so apropos! I get great joy from putting together a starter kit for beginner knitters. During lunch break at work this week, my friend Mary told me that her 9 year old granddaughter just started knitting, and asked me where to go for nice yarn. During our conversation, I was working on a knitted scarf done in gray/white/pink/black variegated yarn (Hobby Lobby “I Love This Yarn”). As we talked, I was getting more dissatisfied with how the yarn color worked up. I asked her if Brooklyn would like this yarn….”Yes.”…..I pulled the fabric off the needles, and wound the yarn back on the skein. I gave her the yarn, and also the needles(Chiaogoo bamboo circular). She wanted to reimburse me, but I told her that she would be doing me a favor by helping me cut down on my stash. That evening I went through my stash and made up a tool kit of useful things. Thanks for the tip about the “shorties” as placeholders, that is so helpful! The placeholders I have always are either cumbersome, or pulling the fabric in a way that’s probably not great for it…I’ll pick some of those up! Karbonz are my go to needles, also…they are amazing in the way they combine all of the positives of wood and metal needles, imo. I use them for nearly everything.

Hi! I stumbled to your channel when I was looking for help on tension control. I love the video you made for total beginners. I just started knitting yesterday. I have been crocheting since I was a kid but mostly toys. Recently I have been crocheting a blanket for my daughter as I recover from a big surgery. Hi Norman. Thanks for sharing your knitting tools with us! Fun video! I, too, collect scissors. As far as needles, I like the Nova Platina because they are so slick. Some of the smaller sizes are pretty sharp so I rarely use them. Same with Hiya Hiya. Way too sharp but as you say it’s all personal preference. Love my ChiaoGoo’s and Addi’s. I also have so many straight needles that I got as a little girl. I don’t use them but can’t bear to part with them, lol. I used to use the row counter like you but couldn’t stand having it on my finger. I still have a couple but found a new red one that you just push the top down and it’s done. Loving those. I just bought a new project bag for all my mini projects like hats, socks and gloves. I can't believe I waited so long. I used to use a clear gallon size zip lock bag, lol. Definitely not pretty. My new bag can be carried like a small backpack. It's amazing. I think I have almost all the needles you showed in your video too. My collection is pretty big.

I am so glad you made this video. So often, knitting videos only talk up their tools, and you are never really sure if they like them, or are just saying that. I like the idea of connecting the stitch counter to the work because I end up knitting several rows and forget to change the counter. I love pretty tools. Your measuring tape is gorgeous. I think I need the carbon needles. Also love your scissor collection. Thank you for the details regarding your favourite yarn. Beautiful tools brings me joy. I forgot to mention that I love the bags. I made a gorgeous leather bag that zips around, similar to yours but smaller for tools.

Thank you for sharing! that needle pouche is super! It's been a year now that i started knitting, so I'm not a pro yet... I knit the continental methode, but the Russian way (Russian purls), which I find waaaaay much easyer and faster!! I knit with interchangeable circular needles only, and the first I tried were the wooden KnitPro Syphony, abd I absolutely love them!! they are so smoothe and warm! Then I bought some Nova, and I don't like them, they are no so fast as the wooden, according to my knitting... I also have a set of KnitPro Zing, and they are fine. The only "flop" of knitpro are the wires... Then for christmas I got my HyiaHyia set, short and not sharp! I love them very much! the wire is much thiner so perfect for magic loop! i tried a pair of sharp, and they are realy very sharp so I don't like them, my yarn is splitting all the time... and it also hurts like hell!! ine thing I don't like at all, is bamboo needles, I realy hate those, except maybe for DPN, which I don't use often, but for this only purpose I appreciate the total absence of glide! as for the yarn, I don't have any favorite brand, because it is quiet expensieve, so for the moment i stick to cheap yarns as I'm still practissing, but I'm very fond of semi-solid colours, and I like those speckled yarns for shawls and socks

I have Addi, Knitters Pride, Lykke and Chiaogoo interchangeable sets. I found your comments on Chiaogoo interesting. I love them and dislike the others for magic loop because of the cables. I have more problems with reverse ladders (stitches too tight) with cables that have a coil memory than I do with the Chiaogoo cables which have no memory. I love the slick the Addis for fast knitting, and use my Lykke set for slippery yarn. Chiaogoo are a nice middle of the road option for me and are my go-to set. I guess that is why there are so many options for knitting needles as we all have our own preferences!

I typically knit traveling magic loop as I only use it for Fair Isle. Guess that too explains why I don't like CG overly much. But yeah, it's so great that there are so many different options out there.

My favourite needles are my addi clicks. Then I have 2 full sets of Knit Picks adjustable circulars. Then I have my stitch markers, measuring tape, scissors and magnetic sheets (I use them to hold and track my patterns). I have a case that holds my darning needles and some fine crochet hooks. Then I have my neck light. It all goes in a bag I made myself. I keep my projects in mesh bags that hold my pattern as well. I have many UFOs.

OMG those Jean-Marie Roulot scissors are so BEAUTIFUL. I am envious lol. I knit, crochet, sew and am learning to needle felt and embroider so I'm almost at the point where I can convince myself to buy a pair haha. They are just lovely. Thank you for showing us your beautiful collections of needles, bags and scissors. I believe that it's worth it to spend the money if you know the tools will last.

Hi Norman, thank you for this and your other videos. I’ve recently returned to knitting after almost a decade. Your tutorials are so helpful and I’m glad to know my kit includes the essentials that work for me. I’m also very sensitive so the feel of the yarn and needles and the sound they make are important to me. I chose to buy a set of the KP Symfonie ICs as I borrowed some from a friend and found I liked them better than the Addi Turbos I used many years ago. Not quite so fast but definitely a pleasure for me to use. Your video has made me realise I’m lucky to live in Australia where high quality, super soft merino is so easily available to me locally. I even have a cashmere producer fairly locally. I’m trying to be mindful and only buy for a specific project, since the yarns I love the look and feel of are more expensive.

yeah..i mean they look pretty...well..worn..but i just can't part with them. I wash them, they are clean and at the end of the day they are totally covered by te shoes ..so i dunno. I knitted a new pair which I never wear (yet).

Great content. I hope all is going well with your move. I just did my first project with double pointed needles. I used them to add a ribbed cuff to a pair of crocheted mittens. I ended up using four of them. I started up from the cast on and sewed the ribbing to the bottom of the mitten at the wrist. It added just the right amount of stretchiness and compactness to them.

I have nail clippers with a mini emery piece on it to clean up rough nails. I hadn't thought of it as being one of my tools before. 🙂

I prefer bamboo needles for the grip in exchange for speed. I have multiple WIPs at any given time, but always have a row counter, scissors (I like the fiskars titanium small scissors), and a fabric tape measure. I like the singer brand pink 60" tape. I like using coco knits metal stitch markers which I can stick to a magnet to help keep from losing them when I need to remove them or move them around. I also only use the claw clasp stitch markers for decorative purposes. I find they just get in the way when slid across the needle and instead use them as visual indicators of how much progress I've made. Clip to the right side of a project and move it every few inches. Helps me realize I'm making progress on big projects like blankets that take a long time. Always love the videos Norman, and love how you make it clear what is personal preference and why you like one thing over another, because maybe the thing you don't like is the exact right fit for someone else!
