I think I'm going to give my player a ring of spell storing with Mordenkainen's Involuntary Wizardry in it. But it'll be under a different name so he can't google it, and he'll know only the casting time, and that the target is a spellcaster. I want to surprise him with the effect and see if he wants to immediately spend it to get his "slot" into the ring or store it forever for fear of the unknown.
@Zulatek6664 жыл бұрын
Jorphdan, If you read the description of "Rary's Aptitude Appropriator", you will see that the borrowed skill does not become forgotten by the target it is taken from, the spell description specifically states that during the spell being active, both beings will "know" the skill being borrowed, and be proficient. Magic jar and soul trap are essential for a necromancer character who seeks to 'ascend' to immortality as a undead. Lichdom is often used as an endgame goal for an evil wizard character or the villain that they are trying to kill. These two spells are always necessary in my games for the character that seeks lichdom combined with a ritual involving mass murder to generate a massive amount of negative energy, capture all the souls from the sacrifices to trade with dark powers and a phalactory.

I like Permanency, though instead of the Constitution thing i'd say "This spell lasts until it is dispelled or you cast this spell again", so you can only have 1 thing permanent at a time.
@faust48134 жыл бұрын
Look at the 3.5 version of the spell they dropped the constitution thing and put limits on what spells could be made permanent so you couldn't do something game breaking.

Nope, still broken. Shapechange into a Titan or Dragon or whatever superpowered creature of your choice so long as you have the level to match/exceed their CR, cast Permanence, and you just got a ton of benefits permanently for the cost of two spells, even if they're high-level ones.

These are great! I'm going to give my party a magic item that'll let them cast Summon Cats once per day. They're going to love it. Just a note, my reading of Rary's Aptitude Appropriator from the text behind you is that you can borrow a proficiency from an unwilling creature, and the creature you borrow from keeps their own proficiency. So for a stealth mission the rogue could give the wizard proficiency in stealth and they could both be sneaky. Or you could capture a creature and forcibly learn its language.

I have found in general 5th edition spells are more powerful than previous editions. So when I began translating those spells over our group kept that in mind when balancing them. For example the Disarm spell you illustrated became a cantrip for us used as a reaction, requiring a saving throw or drop the focus or weapon the individual is attacking with. I wanted to share many of those spells with the group so I created a wizard who just chose to research "new" spells, while utilizing some of the existing 5th edition spells at times. I wish at times WoTC wasn't so vague with their 5th edition material. Some would argue it allows the freedom to homebrew, but they forget, we've always had that freedom. :) Thank you for the video.

Lol what? Time stop is total shit compared to what it was in 3.0. In generel 5e is very watered down and simplified.
@darklordmathias94052 жыл бұрын
@@michaeltreu4152 As someone who started in 3.5, I can definitely say some spells are indeed stronger. Fireball has a lower number of damage dice, AND was a higher level spell, too. Once I started Dming for my current group of friends in 5e, I expected Fireball to still be 5th level and only do half the damage dice it does in 5e. Was certainly a shock for a new Dm. Lol. Edit: Also, that was a change made to 9th level spells period, in an attempt to make martial characters not be as over-shined by spellcasters. More often than not, a 17th level spellcaster can kill groups of melee combatants quite quickly and easily, where the martial classes could still do it, but also have a higher risk of death from an encounter.

PERMANENCY
@BeaglzRok14 жыл бұрын
Permanency has become an odd beast over the years. It's gone from level-8 in 1st-2nd edition to level-5 in 3rd, with different limiting costs (CON vs XP), and there are a handful of spells that have ways to either make them or are permanent, like Druid Grove, Hallow, 6th-level Major Image, Temple of the Gods, or Mighty Fortress. I think I'd split the difference a little and put it at level 7, give it a big ol' gold cost in the material components (~1k gp probs), and have the stipulation be that you have to cast the spell a certain number of times for it to stick a la Grove, Temple, or Fortress.

My Wizard made a fun spell a bit like Mordenkainen's Involuntary Wizardry called Zaganna’s Conveyed Casting, where she could cast a spell through a creature within 60ft (Involuntary creatures getting an INT save or both spell slots are wasted). It's a great way to protect bystanders with Conveyed Sheild or to really mess with enemies by Misty Stepping them off a cliff or in to the sky. (One particularly nasty trick that I only save for really bad guys is, because Zag is a Lore Wizard, Misty Stepping an enemy 1 Mile in to the sky at the cost of a 4th, 3rd, and 2nd level spell slot)

Check out the necrotic cyst spells in 3.5 Book of Vile Darkness particularly the 8th level one necrotic tumor if combined with the 9th level wizard spell programed amnesia also of 3.5 an evil overlord could create unlimited numbers of high level servants that would be enslaved in both body and mind with programed personalities. The amnesia could be fixed with wish or miracle but nothing can save you from the necrotic tumor even better it's presence allows the easy use of the other cyst spells including unavoidable scrying and the 9th level one that consumes the victims soul. This could be done to any living creature in infinite numbers over time there is absolutely nothing to stop you from doing this to say a new demon every single day up through infinity including demon lords if you are strong enough. If I was in that world for real and made it to high level this would be one of pillars of my rule for an abyssal layer.
@BeaglzRok14 жыл бұрын
I recently converted Solipism actually! Renamed it though because 3.5 had a Solipism for wizards and didn't want people to get confused. Faith's Form 4th-level illusion Casting Time: 1 minute Range: 200 feet Components: V, S, M (a bit of fleece and a lotus blossom that the spell consumes) Duration: Concentration, Special Classes: Cleric With the power of your belief, you create a real object that exists in your own mind. When you cast this spell, you can create one object, creature, or force in range that either fits inside a 20-foot cube, or is at most 80 feet long, 5 feet high, and 10 feet thick. The illusion is completely real to your sight and touch, for example a created tree could be climbed and stood upon, a giant can inflict damage to you, or a rushing flood can carry you away. The illusion must be external to you. You cannot for instance create the illusion that you are the size of a giant, unwounded, or have sprouted wings. The illusion also cannot affect those that cannot see it. An illusory hellhound cannot bite or burn a creature that doesn't believe it exists. All other creatures cannot immediately see the illusion, and would otherwise see you climbing and standing on air, crumpling under an unseen attack, or being pushed away by nothing. Each creature in range can choose to make a Wisdom saving throw. On a success, the illusion becomes a part of their reality and they can both see and interact with it just as you can. On a failure, they cannot convince themselves of the illusion and it remains unseen. They can reroll their save at the beginning of each of their turns. The spell lasts as long as the illusion remains in range of the spell or until you lose your concentration.

Disarm is similar to Bigby's hand situation - it's in Command spell as an option: "Drop". And with spell stealing/involuntary casting: In second edition you would prepare spells for the day, not spell slots. So you would memorize particular spells in the morning (like 2 magic missiles, magic armor, shield etc.) and the idea is that you forget them when you cast them - they escape your memory and you have to study them in the morning again. In 5e (I think it started in 3.5 and 4, not sure) it's more about "You have so much memorized and you have N energy (a.k.a. mana) to cast whatever you want from memorized ones". So thematically these spells don't work so well anymore because of how spellcasting changed over editions. What if involuntary casting chooses a spell which you don't have a spell slot - do you upcast it? What if there is no higher level slots as well? With spell stealing, can wizard steal a spell and then write it down in his spellbook? Does spell stealing works with innate spellcasting? All these questions are very hard to answer to make it consistent of spells prepared + spell slots system. You can do it mechanically, of course, but it needs to make sense as well. It made a lot more sense then and now they sound out of place. P.S. Although I love the idea of involuntary casting and would love to mess with my players sometime! :)

So I had the Spell Compendium 4 growing up. I think I got it from Walden Books shortly after I'd started playing AD&D, assuming I'd pick up the rest eventually, and then a week or two later heard that AD&D was switching to D&D 3rd edition and never saw the first three. My favorite spell in that one was Vipergout. It caused a target to vomit a die of vipers from their mouth, 1 per round. So you'd put a creature out of combat for a bit AND cause all these venomous vipers to crawl around the battlefield. (Of course, there was just as much chance the vipers would attack you, oops.) It was probably most memorable for me because it had an illustration of some guy throwing up a snake, which terrified and delighted me. Anyway, great video!

I have these sets and the encyclopedia of magic items which are similar set up. I want the ironguard spell. In Forgotten realms ironguard works with permanency so many of the strongest wizards had this spell permanent on them. It makes any metal weapon pass through them taking no damage. If it is magical you only take the magical bonus as damage. So a +3 two handed sword does 3 damage. Fun spell to make a wizard much stronger. I had a wizard with ironguard and immunity to normal missiles. Could shrug off lots of normal attacks.

Delayed spell, permanancy, spell glyph, enchant item, contingency, repeat spell, etc are great. Enchant a flask (the flask, not the potion inside) of fire resistance with glyph of warding (spell glyph set to trigger when flask is emptied) and delayed blast fireball set to 1 or 2 rounds. Give potion to barbarian. Barbarian drinks flask, keeps flask on him, and rages into middle of fight. Everybody gets 1 to 2 rounds to back up before the barbarian blows up.

I really love this, and I'll have to track those books down. For Mordenkainen's Involuntary Wizardry, to make it work a little better with 5e concentration, I'd probably either have the concentration "moved" to the wizard who cast it, or I'd just have spells that required concentration immediately fail and waste the target's slot.
@davidjay71164 жыл бұрын
So with Rary's Aptitude Appropriator, if I remember correctly, in AD&D 2E there weren't armor proficiencies. Everyone could wear armor, but arcane spell castors had percentages for spell failure based on what armor they were wearing. They were all pretty high, even for light armor, so most wizards would just do the robes we're all familiar with. I think they explained it as the somatic components were so complex that armors would ever so slightly alter your movements and mess up the casting. BUT proficiencies were way more varied in 2E too. They worked more like feats--so that spell could still get pretty crazy I bet.
@thecharmer59812 жыл бұрын
2e player- there was armor proficiency. Mages spell failure was based on int, not armor, and they straight up cant cast spells when wearing it. Thieves can only use leather, stuffed leather, padded and elven chain. Fightersand clerics can wear any armor, rangers can wear any armor but can only use their abilities when in studded leather, or any armor lighter then studded leather

I had a player who once played a good aligned necromancer, portraying him as a sort of medieval quack doctor. Anyway, as a result he developed a number of medical utility spells and potions one of which was his "lubrication" spell which acted as a strong laxative. While it didn't do any damage it could be handy for distracting enemies (e.g. you are in a fight with the BBB and suddenly he's having to cross his legs and start looking for a toilet), or damage enemy morale (enemy commander is trying to give an inspiring speech and suddenly wishes he had on his brown trousers). And it was pretty funny too!

There used to be a great spell in a AD&D 2 supplement about a school of wizardry that explained how you could capture wizards. I don’t remember the name of the spell but basically it would make a wizard forget a prepared spell at random on a failed saving throw. And if you failed a saving throw, you would roll again to see if you would forget another spell. And so on and so forth until you had forgotten all your prepared spells. This thing was beautiful because with one spell it could simply burn through a wizard’s entire arsenal. Being a high level spell (5 I think) it couldn’t be spammed but was highly effective against low level wizards and a lot less so against powerful wizards whose saving throws (and sheer amount of spells in their repertoire) would be high enough that you couldn’t wipe even a big part of their spell list. You could also use other spells to make saving throws more difficult with a good combo. And lastly it explained why even powerful wizards with tons of spells to use would always have magical items with stored spells or take time to make scrolls. The setting described in the book even had a powerful wizard jailed for treason under the school and on whom that spell had been cast before her imprisonment (after which she simply did not have access to her spell book). You could have entire prisons made like that. One of the beautiful thing about this spell is that it can be tweaked easily. A low level version was provided that simply made the wizard forget a spell at random, without the recurring effect. You could also probably make a higher level version that could be infectious (once a spell caster has lost all its spell slots any spell caster in a radius around him must make a saving throw or fall under the effect of the spell) or have it affect things that aren’t spells (like proficiencies)

I've toyed with Combine before in my 5e campaign, one NPC is an avatar of the goddess of magic (Not Mystra, homebrew pantheon), and to return a favor to a player character, she Combined the spells Firestorm and Disintegrate, one 7th and one 6th-level, into an 8th-level spell called Atomizing Matrix. It has the 10x 10ft cubic area of Firestorm, but uses the higher damage of Disintegrate, retaining the ability to instantly destroy nonmagical objects and terrain. She used the spell to tunnel into a large frozen lake so the players could investigate this crashed Spelljammer ship that a hostile eldritch cult was looking for. Atomizing Matrix has since been transcribed into spell scrolls, but no player has found one yet. The main BBEG loves stacking Permenancy on spells like Mind Blank and Nystul's Magic Aura to hide his base, activities and tools from the players' Divination.

I love permanancy. I would definitely change the malus, though. By level 8 you're already reaching godly power... I would simply have it that you couldn't have more than a certain number of permanancy spells active at once. Permanent stat maluses as a result of casting a spell isn't something I want to see outside of Wish. Alternatively, we can max out the total number of spell slot levels worth of permanent spells to 7 or something. In addition, you can't have permanancy up for more than one of the same spell at once. So you can have a permanent shield of faith, detect magic, darkvision, and barkskin up, but not 3 shields of faith.

The problem with disarm is that anyone can disarm already in 5e, it would be a saving throw instead of an attack, which is interesting for sure however that would cost a spell slot, for something that anyone can already do at all times, even if with a different roll I think it would be pretty useless
@SambagsStockpot4 жыл бұрын
Probably going a bit off-piste here but I started incorporating a house ruling that any time a combatant is knocked prone or disarmed, they are so disoriented that they have disadvantage on attack rolls until the start of their next turn and they lose their reaction. I felt it was it was too easy to get disarmed, pick up your weapon and carry on fighting like nothing had happened; same with getting knocked prone -- "Oh! I've just been knocked on my arse. I'll use half my movement to get up and then just carry on attacking the guy standing in front of me." I added it to recovering from Death Saving Throws as well: there is no way you just pop up from being bleeding out without *some* disadvantage (if you'll pardon the pun). Anyhoo....

I love those old books and have brought forward the odd spell or two into 5e My players know that the spells of the PHB are the common spells and those of XGtE and TCoE are slightly rarer and that there are way more spells out in the world being used some known only to the mage that wrote it etc It a good way too introduce interesting spells from 2e or homebrew into the campaign Cheers

Awesome, I always flavor up my spells anyways 😂 But there are some great ideas!

I’ve actually grabbed a lot of spells from Midgard. The only problem I had with them is I think they were a level too high. So for instance I make some of the 2nd levels spells worth a 1st level slot

I don't know if I could get the people I play with to use the cat summoning spell considering that they have no control over the action and my players generally really hate that, it just generally seems weak compared to conjuration where you pacifically get to pick what you want summoned

Two of these definitely stick out to me regarding the reason why they might have been left out of 5e. Disarm is a Battle Master maneuver (not a very good one because unless another party member picks up or moves the dropped item, the enemy basically gets to pick it up for free) and Stealspell seems like the Arcane Trickster ability which basically does the same thing as the spell describes. I'm thinking they were technically brought back to 5e, just as abilities for other classes besides the wizard because, well .. they dont need more spells, haha.

The old 2e Mordenkainen's Lucubration is a very different spell from Mordenkainen's Lubrication.

The problem of stealspell (and M. Involuntary Wizardry) is that you basically need the complete spell list worked out for every enemy caster. I'm playing PF 1e (in the Forgotten Realms) and my caster (lvl18) has over 50 prepared spells. My DM would need to prepare enemies (of similar level) with a similar amounts of spells. Just for the sake of making one of my spells possible. In an encounter he might use 20 of those spells (at best). Other spells from 2nd edition (like Anticipate - it allows you to know what everyone within 60feet will do the next round so you can act accordingly) face a similar problem. They add a ton of overhead. So yeah, while those spells sound cool - they're also incredible good at slowing down a table (or DM prep). And I understand that this is no longer the philosphy of most modern RPGs. One of my favourite spells not in 5e? 2nd edition "Create Major Helm". I'm a sucker for Spelljammer and while my group rarely travels outside of Toril (not even speaking about outside the Realmspace crystal sphere) it is always cool to get a flying ship :)

Combine is more or less how my players make spells. They all get one in what would be tier 4 play, yes even non-magic classes. The most absurd is "Firstitheni" (First I then I) you pick a point any living thing in a five foot radius from that point will cast fireball the next time it make a vocalisation, this then happens to anyone hit by the fireball, and anyone hit by their fireball. It is the ultimate spell of chaos.
