MONSTERS OF DRAKKENHEIM is 300+ pages of eldritch horror inspired monsters for 5e by the Dungeon Dudes! Coming to Kickstarter March 26th, 2024: www.kickstarter.com/projects/... Magic can tear the world asunder… or just start arguments at the game table!
We take a look at five open-ended - and low-level - spells that commonly cause trouble and headaches at the game table. In addition to clearing up some rules misconceptions, we’ll discuss how Dungeon Masters might make good rulings when these spells come up in play.
Timestamps and page references for the spells discussed in this video:

7:57 Suggestion (PHB 279)
14:06 Arcane Eye (PHB 214)

As always, the Dungeon Master is the final authority on how the rules work in play. This video is our opinion on ways DMs can make good rulings when these spells come up in play, not a handbook for players on how to abuse the rules. We're curious if there are other potentially "game-breaking" spells you'd like to see us discuss in future videos!

we won a fight against a dragon with the suggestion spell. What happened was we had a divinity wizard and the suggestion spell. We were fighting the dragon in the gold room and suggested the dragon dance and dont stop till the moon turned into cheese. We then used the divinity dice to make him fail the save. dancing all this time caused himt to suffer exhaustion while we took a long rest. This eliminated its ability to regain hitpoints while we healed up and used our last moments to set up our most powerful attacks and surround the dragon for a final one round kill.
@Jeanko06
@Jeanko06 5 жыл бұрын
Isn't a dragon intelligent enough to know that dancing till the moon turns into cheese is basically ordering it to die? Hence the suggestion breaking as a result? Or at the very least, the minute it got exausted it would realize how futile the command is at the very least. That being said: I love the mental image that popped into my head, and 'am planning to drop a scroll or book with the spell to see what my peeps come up with :D

Creation is one of the most unbalanced spells. At 5th level you could create a 5x5x5ft cube of gold, and drop it on something. Sure these things take setup but if you fly over the dragons lair, or a castle you get a 9th level meteor effect for a 5th and a 3rd level spell.

0:55 This is NOT true for 9th-level spells. Astral Projection, Power Word Heal, Shapechange, Storm of Vengeance, and Weird are all trash compared to the other 9th-level spells. AP is a more dangerous and tedious Plane Shift that only targets the Astral Plane and only exists to make the planar travel seemingly safer (With any good DM it's not since you can easily be ousted). PWH is a crappy version of Wish's healing power, which does take a toll but is still SO worth it compared to PWH. Shape needs no explanation, it's a worse Invulnerability since it's Concentration so anything powerful enough to use it against will invariably one-shot the spell (Unless playing by Nat 20 Save rules, in which case you'll generally have a 1/20 chance to take any real hit). Storm tries to be an army (Or rather, Navy) breaker by dealing a lot of damage to a large area, but making it balanced enough that it's ONLY viable for large groups of targets without being too powerful ultimately makes it be too small of a area to really threaten an end-game military force and too weak to deal worthwhile damage. Weird is simply a worse Psychic Scream. It has the potential to be better than Scream, but scream's initial damage is always more likely to trump Weird's damage over time except in truly lucky circumstances. Of course, if you think otherwise, I wouldn't be above seeing your opinions on the worst 9th-level spells and why.

I had a group pull a fast one on me with Suggestion against what was supposed to be a challenging bounty they were supposed to bring in. They'd worn themselves out against the peons in the area, thinking that they'd have to travel another day to catch up to the target- nope, the target was a clever ranger that had been waiting to ambush them. The Bard slaps suggestion down for the second time in the entire campaign. "Come sit by our fire and share in our beer and meat". Eight hours later the target realies he's been chilling with the party while they recover from what was supposed to be his advantage. Our Rogue even got the guy to teach him some trapping snares. I can't even be mad. It was some really clever quick thinking.

Exactly what I was thinking. If you transform from an ant to a person inside a skull assuming it takes one second from 0.0-0.2 seconds you probably are now 6 inches tall and have caused them to have a seizure while their brain is dislodged. From 0.2-0.4 seconds you are now a foot tall their brain is smashed as they die and your body is forced to ball up as it pressed on all sides against their skull. 0.4-0.6 seconds as your body is expanding to be 2ft while you are surrounded by their rigid skull immense pressure is felt in your entire being as you now wonder if their skull will burst before all your bones are broken and your organs turn to jelly. Contested con and if you fail almost every bone your body will snap against the pressure on failure you die instantly and success you will take 8d8 crushing damage from the pressure it took to accumulate. 0.6-0.8 seconds growing to 4 feet will cause their head to explode regardless and your previous save determines if you just come out a severely broken and traumatized man or a pile of red goop.

My favorite instance of using Suggestion to cheese an encounter was when I was playing as a Fierna Tiefling (Who got a once per day use of Suggestion) in Curse of Strahd. After we'd ransacked Baba Lysaga's hut, she came back just as we were leaving with all of her stuff and started combat with us. When my turn came around I used Suggestion with the command "Uh...Strahd sent us...Go bother him!". She immediately took off for Strahd's castle to have some words with him and we beat feet as far away from that hut as possible. Strahd was very annoyed the next time we saw him...

Well the powerful villain would not really show up till later. It would be his minions they would mostly be dealing with. That is until he actually has to get off his ass and come after the party. DND campaigns can last a year or more so it would make sense to have him as an endgame final boss. He is content to send his minions after the party and corrupt the land. His only policy would be don't make me come down there. He would be really powerful but he would be too lazy to do anything most of the time and leaves the mundane tasks to his minions. He is only letting the party progress or even get close to him because he finds their struggle entertaining and is setting them up to fall. So when he actually shows up it is fucking terrifying.

I actually had a really interesting Suggestion story the other day. Succubus got caught after trying to sacrifice the local magic shop owner and we started getting our asses handed to us by her and her hellhound and imps. After failing a suggestion (she rolled a nat 18 on the save) and trying again *and* using inspiration to force her to reroll her nat 17 save, I managed to convince her to go back to her home plane, as she had nothing left to gain here (she thought the sacrifice was done). She did, and after stabilizing and saving the magic shop owner, we set a crazy trap outside the portal-mirror involving a bear trap, the snare spell, a duct-taped-to-the-wall +1 scythe (halberd stat block), and a few vials of holy water. She died instantly to the trap after the 8 hours of suggestion wore off... but then the big angry devil she brought with her stepped through because she obviously would bring friends since we pretty much ruined her whole plan. Ended up being a fun fight with the big demon, but suggestion was huge in letting us reset the fight and take out a key opponent to deal with later.

Bit of a tip: I once rolled ridiculously high on my character (had 17,17,15,15,13,11). And decided to pick human. I could've obviously gone for regular human and round EVERYTHING upwards. but felt it was unsportsmanlike and just took variant and thought "let me just deliberately waste a feat on something that my barbarian will get 0 use out of". Took find familiar. Vaguely recalled a variant rule for familiars at the back of the Monster manual. Asked the DM, they said "ok" and we tied it into the backstory. I was now a foundling barbarian, raised by a tiny pixie who he managed to bring back from the dead through find familiar. Then the game started and it quickly turned out i'd accidentally made myself some kind of half-warlock with 2 turns in initiative. and while familiars cant attack, they can still cast spells. Pixies know 4th level spells. My level 1 barbarian, had by complete accident, in my attempt at self sabotague, gotten access to spells that would take a full caster 8 levels to get access to.

@@Sirperfluous The Imp, Quasit, and Pseudodragon all have "Variant: familiar" forms in the MM which state that they're technically obtainable, but SageAdvice said that they were included for NPC spellcasters. It wouldn't be outside of RAW for the DM to allow the players to earn the trust of a pseudodragon or an imp, but RAI they'd have to meet it in the wild and convince it to serve them. Pixies are not included in this and wouldn't be obtainable through the spell, so it instead seems he plead the case that the familiar is technically a spirit of the player's chosen type (in this case fay.) The fay spirit wouldn't be able to materialize as anything but the summoned beast, so the DM allowing it makes it homebrew.
@michaeldr6647
@michaeldr6647 3 жыл бұрын
With find familiar u summon a spirit that can take the form of a creature. So if choose your familiar to take the form of a cat, it gets the stats of a cat but it's not a cat. That's also why you can change its form and make it take the form of another creature. Although I like the idea of rp where you say your familiar takes the form of a cat and it's always a cat no matter what and I also like home rules that allows you to pick a form outside the specific options the spell gives you, I think what you describe is out of the rules of the spell based on its description.

My favorite use of Suggestion was from my halfling enchanter. We we're traveling with the Red Wizards along the Sword Coast (HoTDQ). I had a small cart that my character Gob would sleep in. Right before bed, I'd spend an hour casting Glyph of Warding on the door handle, putting Suggestion in it. The trigger was if a creature is attempting to enter my cart with hostile intentions, then they would be suggested to walk back the way we came, for the next 8 hours. Walking overnight would cause exhaustion, and I'd be 16 hours away by the time they would wake up from their long rest.

I'm pretty sure that if your particular DM wanted to be that specific in how the spell worked, they can point out how it needs to be stated that way and ask you to rephrase it so that it's compliant. It also makes a difference if what is being said is being said in character or out of character. Since I'm not playing a character at the moment, I'm speaking out of character and about intentions and concepts that the characters wouldn't have a clue about and would say in a very-in-game-world way. I've been playing D&D since 2e, nearly 25 years. I can honestly say that in all that time, it's never been a problem, either for me as the DM, or for other DMs with me as the player. It's entirely possible that none of us noticed that the spell has always required a course of action, rather than just giving them the idea.

The wizard polymorphed into an eagle to scout the battlefield and found the enemy general's tent and spotted the enemy general out in the open watching the battlefield... without his helmet on. ....then the wizard landed on his head, and polymorphed into a rot grub. The look on the DM's face as he tore-up the general's NPC sheet was priceless.

The way I dmed polymorph, and my player turned into a nat and flew inside the bad guys head: He grew back into himself, and exploded out the bad guys head. The catch? HE blew up as well. A mixture of blood, guts, and brains from BOTH of them splattered everywhere. He was mad and demanded to know why. I told him, it’s conceivable that you could do that. But think about the toll on your body? Your suddenly turning into a human inside a tight area, and so your body is being forced together. And thus, this causes your body to crush itself as it expands. Splattering both of you Side note to all the people who are upset that I killed a player, the party had multiple was to bring people back from the dead. Come on guys, our job is to make the story and game memorable. What’s more memorable? Being told “no”, or having things blow up in your face so badly that it leads to you being splattered all over the place? Boohoo, he died, he was mad at first but then later on was laughing about it. And you know what, that’s one of his favorite player stories to tell. I consider that, proof of my job being a success.

The only potential problem with this is the spell shapechange as that would allow you to change into something that is effectively indestructible and as such, cause this sort of effect. The problem here is that you effectively get as many uses as you want from power word kill from just one casting of another 9th level spell, along with all the other possibilities of shapechanger. Also, you could use this to turn one enemy into a cockroach(or something similar)have one PC grapple another foe and force it to eat its friend, then dispel the effect, killing both. It still has potentially devastating consequences. However, handling it the way you did was appropriate in my opinion. If a PC does something stupid without thinking through the consequences, making sure there are consequences is very important.

I would've rp'd out that 30 feet of movement for a gnat is probably nothing. They're in pitch dark, and have NO ability to navigate the hairs, various tunnels your ears go to (lungs, nose) and even a simple swallow motion might send them somewhere. Pretty hard to navigate in there, as gnats don't have the means to push apart flesh or end up someplace normal. It might end up blowing the flesh of an ear off but not be lethal, unless they successfully navigated down. That'd certainly be a medicine check as well as a perception check to not get turned around. But if you're comparing the mass of a human skull versus the mass of an person, the person might survive. I'd RP it out in reverse. Imagine you're a standing person, inside a room sized skull complete with brains. You can't see, hear. Now that room sized skull is getting smaller, and smaller, and smaller. They'd have to bend over when the enemy skulls ultimately meets theirs inside (top of player skull touches enemy skull, assuming they return to human form standing upright). The brain matter would give versus your skin, as brain matter isn't that tough, so you'd scramble his brains long before it killed you, but the trouble is the skull IS tough. Long story short, you're gonna be eating some brains unless you exhale. The pressure would force it down your throat as your lungs compressed and forced you to exhale. That skull won't give easily. Eating human brains can be lethal, so absolutely get a free disease out of it. Prion disease, otherwise known as kuru. Definitely a con saving throw or medicine check to know to exhale. Snapping the skull could be dangerous. As you are growing, if you don't tuck, you could end up bending over backwards or smashing your skill into theirs - bludgeoning damage in any event, with a dexterity saving throw. If you don't "push" when you do it and break through, you're basically hitting a bone wall at high speed. Managing a kick at that speed seems impossible, so I'm guessing a head trauma - I'd call that a critical hit against you for a total of 3d8 bludgeoning, and 2 points of exhaustion for a concussion. You basically headbutted the guy the WRONG way. Your legs would buckle and move, so your skull is the most likely thing to bash into them. Lastly I'd give them an acrobatics check to not land or take another 1d6. You're SMEARED with jumbled brain juice. Disadvantage. You won't know which way is up unless you have keen mind or planned it out in advance, but some problem when you're a gnat. But to each their own.

My favorite usage of phantasmal force: a bard convinced a dragon mother, that morged her dead baby, that her baby was in fact still there. That's the only time me as a dungeon master actually needed to make a five minute break to think about what to do next. In the end I just made the dragon lady ignore the adventures and curl up around her percieved baby. Then the adventurers argued until the spell ended and had to fight a really enraged bronze dragon. Needless to say they got killed and saw the "bad ending" of that oneshot. Because that dragon was actually good and they doomed the whole town by weakening her in combat. (I wouldn't do a TPK in a campaign, but at the final boss of a oneshot I think it's okay...)

@DungeonDudes
@DungeonDudes 5 жыл бұрын
This is very true, however, that doesn't necessarily make for a balanced situation. The balance between NPCs/ monsters and player characters is asymmetrical by design in D&D 5e, so there's certain powers that are totally acceptable when put in the hands of monsters, and certain tactics that are alright for the players to use due to the built-in assumption that most of the time the players should come out on top. However, when these are flipped around the results can be campaign-warping. When these spells are turned against the player characters, the results can be unfair, frustrating, or possibly even campaign-ending. As always, use your discretion, and if things get out of hand -- have a conversation about it as a group to decide what's fair at your table.
@MarvelX42
@MarvelX42 5 жыл бұрын
I didn't say that the players should be able to run roughshod in the game or that letting the NPCs do these things should be allowed. I am just saying that this is one of the reasons that this sort of stuff should be carefully thought out and controlled to not get out of hand. Also, yes the game is asymmetrical, but not in favor of the players. It is a huge dangerous world filled with all sorts of things that could and would easily kill the players characters. Even when the PCs reach level 20 and higher the gods may start to take notice of them and kill them. In other words wisdom and tactfulness are the players greatest strengths, or should be.

NPCs may not even need that to break the game. Something as simple as a Sorcerer who ambushes the party while using Greater Invisibility and Subtle Spell metamagic can lay down ridiculous damage without the party having any indication of the source. Add in a second Sorcerer doing the same thing and now you've got 150-250 points of damage being thrown at the players before they realize anything is happening. The point of the game though, IMO, is not to kill the players in such a way but pressure them just enough that they scrape through at the last moment and feel great about it.

A few things: - I would argue that suggesting someone walk north for 8 hours would seem strange and unreasonable. That's my personal ruling on that particular one. - I like the Arcane Eye usage, but after revealing the dungeon, I would then cover it up again after the Arcane Eye leaves. That way, the wizard has the information but has to rely on his memory to recreate it with the party in real-time. It might even be cool to have the rest of the party leave the room while you reveal the map, thereby forcing him to relay all the information from memory to the rest of the party. That's a great RP opportunity and I think most players would actually appreciate that element of realism.

I remember one time when we were running over a field with some rocks and sporadic trees (kinda like when the hobbits are hunted by that white orc Azog on the horses and wolves, except less trees, more open). Our druid was shifted into a crow and told to kaw once for things of notice, and kaw 2 times for danger. Suddenly the crow kawed twice, so we quickly looked around, and a fast angry gryphon slammed into the side of a horse one of us was riding on (the dragonborn sorcerer who spent the entire combat trying to get his stuck leg out from under the horse but failed until the end of the battle). While we fought the gryphon on the ground the druid crow was skydiving towards us to help. Eventually the gryphon got a bit hurt, turned around and slapped me to the ground with it's wing and used the ground and me as a sprinting board to lead into the air to get airborne. Suddenly the gryphon and the crow was on collision course. Now... if they were to collide.. what damage would the tiny crow to towards the lion sized gryphon, not much, but it kept diving straight towards the gryphon. Right before colliding they started to go through the books looking for casting times and stuff. Suddenly the crow in midair turned into a huge brown bear seconds before slamming into the VERY confused gryphon. They tumbled around in the air, the bear managed to get ontop, and they slammed into the group. Our DM just shut the book and said "I'm not even going to count damage for that... the gryphon is feathers and paste now... On top of the crushed gryphon sat the bear on it's but, smiling and grunting happily. We laughed for a good 15 minutes before we could get on playing from there. :P Excellent creativity with midair wildshape. :P

Hypnotic pattern is damn powerfull: Reason #1: Incapacitation. Functionally, every player at some point gets into an argument with their DM about whether suggestion can be used to incapacitate an enemy by 'suggesting' they sit down, shut up, and do nothing. There's no argument with the pattern. It just works. Reason #2: Focus fire. Some things pass the save. Those things tend to become priority target numero uno if your party has any intelligence whatsoever. When all non-incapacitated enemies are dead, you've won the encounter. This often can turn a deadly encounter into an easy one. Reason #3: Long range with cubic AoE that has unique properties. no line of sight required. You can be behind full cover and still cast it. DM: "The wizard counterspells you!" Player: "No, he can't see me. Punked." Edit: It's a 30' cube. You must see one face of the cube. If you can see the face of the cube above the opponents, or on the far side of them, you can cast it behind full cover. Otherwise, you can still use illusory cover, vis-a-vis minor illusion. Reason #3b: Cube AoE has an added benefit. PHB204 reads: "A cube's point of origin (one face a point on one face) is not included in the area of effect unless you choose otherwise." This means you can cast it on top of a line one of your party members...and they will not have to make saving throws. Even without a devotion Paladin ally. You do have to see them to make use of this, though. Edit: It appears to be one square, or possibly a point in space. I am checking on this with JC. Reason #4: Lack of verbal component. Silenced? IDGAF, look at the pretty lights you bitch. Added bonus: if you cast it from behind cover, illusory or otherwise, nobody left has a damn clue where the lights came from and won't know who made their save. Note that illusory cover is required to also throw in a diviner's portent to force-fail the save of a high-WIS enemy like that spellcaster that couldn't counterspell you. Reason #5: No follow-up saves. Self-explanatory. The only way out is another creature's full action. Which just piles on advantage to your party's action economy! Reason #6: Synergy. Devotion Paladins render the party immune to charm. So drop that pattern on top of everyone's head and laugh as the enemies all take a nap, and whoever is left gets dogpiled. If the enemy isn't immune to charm (ie, a construct or undead), I almost always default to this spell.

I love Hypnotic Pattern. The only reason why it wasn't shortlisted for this video is that it's not terribly controversial -- the spell is very clearly written and there isn't too much ambiguity about how it works. Everyone looks at Suggestion and Mass Suggestion, but IMO, Command is more powerful than either of them. It has 4 advantages: No Limitation on how reasonable it is, only whether it will cause harm or not. No arcane babble is included, the spell only requires a singular word. No components other than that word. It's a level one spell with upcasting potential. I've used this spell to great effect. Got a big bad guy you dont want to fight? Command him to Surrender or Disarm. Need to make a Deception check? Command them to Believe. Need them to accept your proposal? Command them to Accept, etc. etc. Its disadvantages are as follows, but I think in comparison they're fairly minor: Only one word commands. No self-harming commands. It only lasts for one round. But one round isn't much of a disadvantage when you trap someone with a command like surrender, believe or agree.

(probably shouldv'e had each attack land on their own and count up failed death saves...but didn't want to take 15 minutes to add that up, so I rolled all damage at once). Suffice to say...any campaign i run will now have a horde of elk at one point or another.

For the Polymorph into enemy, I'd say that it's very difficult to do mid-combat (enemies won't sit still and willingly let insects enter them), the polymorphed also takes the HP of the tiny form and is thus easy to kill/stop. DM can just say that the enemy sneezed at the right time and expel player 10ft away. Additionally, if you transform back to full form from inside an enemy body, the DM can rule that the player ALSO takes tremendous damage in the process. Maybe even character death. That will stop most players from trying.
@klasodeth
@klasodeth 2 жыл бұрын
Nobody's going to pay attention to a tiny bug when a half dozen people are trying to murder them with an assortment of weapons and attacks. Also, you can't sneeze out your ear. That said, applying equal damage to both creatures is a sensible approach and is what we do in the game I'm playing in. Basically, whichever creature has less HP dies, and that HP total is done as damage to the other creature. It adds a very tricky risk-versus-reward dynamic that prevents it from being a go-to attack. Even when the attack succeeds, you may find yourself with so few HP that other enemies can easily take you down. At the very least, you probably won't have enough HP to try a second time.

One other spell that I feel can be really problematic from a DM's perspective is Reincarnate, not for its use to revive dead PCs and hirelings, but because of how it can change how the DM needs to handle NPCs in the narrative. Reincarnate has a similar time restriction for how long the target has to have been dead for as Ressurection, but is available several levels earlier. The justification for this seems to be that the randomized nature of what the target gets brought back as makes it a much less useful option for bringing PCs back from the dead, but this doesn't take into account the way this spell can be used to circumvent certain other narrative challenges when used on dead NPCs. The fact that it can bring back any dead creature, even ones that have suffered catastrophic damage, means that DMs are no longer able to present certain narrative scenarios to the party such as them being called on to solve a recent murder (Just reincarnate the victim and have them give their side of the story), or having an enemy threaten their allies (While it'll suck if we fail to save them, we do have that severed finger Jimmy the Mobster mailed to us an hour ago to reincarnate them with). While it's not necessarily game breaking, it heavily changes the way the GM needs to run the game a bit earlier than I think was probably intended.
@XMaster340

I think that's why the phrase "If the target's soul isn't free or willing to do so, the spell fails." With a bit of creative thinking, a DM can come up with quite a few reasons why either one might be the case. You are generally right though. The DM has to consider this case.

One way I dealt with this problem is to change how cultures deal with the thought of reviving a dead person. The culture the party was in at level 4 felt that bringing a soul back to the body was making a mockery of the gods and offensive to the god of the dead. They had to seek help from a very shady cult that followed the god of death rather than the god of the dead in order to bring back a dead PC. This cultist wanted them to assist in the assassination of a prince in exchange since the party was broke. Caused a very interesting moral schism in the party. Of course, they could've just traveled to the next cultural and political region where the outlook on revival is far different, but they didnt persue that thread of information I gave on a religion check.

My favorite Suggestion is to tell a character to doff his armor. If it's wearing heavy armor, that's 100 rounds to do. During that time, he must spend his action every turn doing just that. And after it's done, well, he no longer is wearing armor, and if he wants it back, that's another 10 minutes of putting armor on. Saying "Here, let me hold that for you" and disarming your enemy. Telling a henchmen to introduce the party to the boss saying "We're here to meet your boss, we have an appointment. Can you bring us to him?", and then watch as this minion tranquilizes everyone in the compound going like "It's fine guys! They have an appointment."

Only the most fearful guard in a tyrannical force, who won't take any action without a direct order from his superior, will stand by and watch some obviously suspicious character come up and do something like that without reacting. If there is no plan to appear reasonably plausible outside the spell use, no one will buy it, and if no effort to conceal the casting, shouts and crossbow bolts will be likely reactions. Fun story: After I watched this video for the first time, I decided to give my newly-leveled up bard Phantasmal Force and Hypnotic Pattern to see what would come out of it. This also happened to be the week of the final boss battle in one of my game store campaigns. Sooooo... Before the boss showed up, there were maybe 8 flying rafts full of zombies heading toward the town to take out our backup defenses. I threw a Hypnotic Pattern onto the one in front, making it stop for a moment and cause a huge pile-up behind it. Cue lots of falling zombies. Then there was the boss battle itself, against a buffed-up ancient dragon. Our goal wasn’t actually to kill it, but to keep it occupied while a few party members set up a black hole machine that would not only destroy it but prevent any sort of lich-like resurrection. When those party members succeeded, the dragon saw the black hole forming and, understandably, freaked out. My little bard got an idea: Why not use Phantasmal Force to create a forced-perspective image in front of the black hole, making it look like it wasn’t there? The DM ruled that this would require a performance check... no problem, I have expertise and nailed the roll. But the big surprise was the dragon failing the saving throw, ignoring legendary resistance, and falling for it. Yep, I fooled an ancient dragon plus with an imaginary painting.

So in our campaign, my level 7 Arcane Trickster used detect thoughts on a guy to determine whether or not we could trust him to take us into the city. While I was doing this, another member of the party asked him about the city and caused the guy to draw up a mental map of the city and the areas he'd been to, including the guards' patrol routes as he often smuggled things past them. This mainly worked because our barbarian was an old soldier and had already asked these questions while I had cast the spell out of earshot thanks to a neat Nat 20 stealth roll. We basically circumvented the need for the NPC to make a saving throw against my spell DC because of this and the DM was happy because he thought we'd be wondering the town for hours before we'd find a map to get around.

My favorite experience for phantasmal force is a spinning weightless cube of opaque goo. In order to stand/walk you use 3 senses - sight, inner ear, and proprioception(your ability to feel your shifting weight through your muscles). Opacity blinds you, spinning throws off your inner ear, and being weightless inside a cube of goo means you have no reference point for proprioception. Anyone who fails their wisdom save will flop around on the ground unable to stand for the duration.

A couple of honorable mentions I'd like to add... Anytime damage doesn't have a way to be avoided, it can be game breaking. Not necessarily bad, but generating unintended consequences. Green Flame Blade: you have to roll a melee attack against your target. But the adjacent target takes damage with no way to avoid it. You wanna wear down the BBEG with the ultra high AC? GFB can do it, using his minions against him. Cloud of Daggers: it's only a 5ft cube, but anything in it takes damage. Period. No save. So you can cast it, drag an enemy to it, grapple them there, and every round they take damage no matter what. Again, useful for opponents that are hard to hit. Spike Growth: again, no save damage. If you aren't present when it is cast, you don't even get a chance to know there's anything wrong with the ground. When you try to move across it, it is difficult terrain, and you take damage for every square you move. No save. Just eat it. This is a real killer against an enemy that must close to melee range to hurt you, while you have ranged alternatives. Lastly, the lowly Fog Cloud... aka Darkness. Everyone loves the Darkness spell, but read up on the "heavily obscured" condition. That's what Darkness does. Except that Fog Cloud does it with a level 1 slot, for a full hour. So you get the area denial benefit for longer, at a lower cost.
@normal6483
@normal6483 5 жыл бұрын
Fog Cloud for this purpose is good, and probably better than Darkness in general since fewer creatures can see through it. But a Warlock with Darkness basically has Greater Invisibility at low level, making them the best combatant around. It's a super good ability to take advantage of.

The Darkness/Devil'sSight combo is undoubtedly one of the strongest in the game... if you're the WL. It really messes up the rest of the party, which is one of the reasons that WLs are more popular in chat forums than in real games. But, none of this actually has anything to do with the Fog Cloud spell. If anything, it underscores how powerful it is. If you're up against opponents that can see through magical darkness, Fog Cloud still works. It's a lvl 1 spell that accomplishes most of what a lvl 2 spell does, but more reliably and for longer.

Ummm, there are only a couple ways to see in magical Darkness. None of them are natural, and none of them are available to a class with the Archery style. Totally agree. I think that's why you get two sentences. If you say to the giant "I'm here to deliver an important message to your leader, let me pass." Well, that sounds pretty reasonable. The "forget we were here" part doesn't work: the creature can't do willingly. "Order your men to stand down, and draw us a map" is might be a double-barrelled request. I'd rule it's one or the other in that case.
@Jpteryx
@Jpteryx 5 жыл бұрын
The way I decide whether something's "reasonable" is, could the creature have given a third party an explanation for why it followed the suggestion, other than "a wizard made me do it?" The giant can't and wouldn't just decide to forget something, so that's not a reasonable suggestion. If you're attacking the evil guards, I can't think of any reason their captain could reasonably let you go steal their treasure. But I would have allowed the Suggestion of "order your men to stand down so we can go bring you some treasure and all leave this castle much richer." (The character making this suggestion doesn't have to keep their word to the captain, of course!)

You cannot willingly forget. Think of what is reasonable by process of elimination. If there is another spell that does what you're trying to do with this spell, then it is quite possible your spell cannot do what you want it to do. Because forgetting about an event -> That's literally what modify memory spell is for... That player tried to combine two spells in to one....

The way we handle suggestion is that we equate the spell to a forced success on a very hard persuasion. So you can do things with it that you could potentially do with persuasion if your persuasion roll could go to let's say 30.

Phantasmal force...i gotta argue on that one. the "spells do what they say they do" rule applies, but it never specifies that it is created in a point in space. it does however, say it creates stimuli. this, in a very loose way, can be used to justify the phantasm moving, as the definition of a stimulus could indeed include visual stimuli created through movement.
@DungeonDudes

I see what you mean. I've read the spell description over and over, and it's really hard to figure out what the intent is behind it. I don't think it's a *huge* problem if the illusion can move, if it has clearly programmed instructions on how to move -- since again, you can't control the phantasm directly once it's created. In fact, the caster can't even see the phantasm, since it exists only in the mind of the target creature!
@goose6752

The phantasm is created in the mind of the target. It should act in a way consistent with how the target believes it should act. An ogre will pursue it, a pool of acid stays put, chains binding its wings remain in place.
@patrick2231
@patrick2231 5 жыл бұрын
the chains ones is an interesting dinamic. for instance, the bridge example makes a creature try to walk across a bridge, but the bridge isn't there and thus they fail to do that. will chains act in a similar manner, even if they are "attacking" the creature? It was an interesting topic. for one, if the chains can do damage shouldn't they be able to trip or restrain a creature? 2, if they can then why doesn't the bridge interact in a similar way? if the chains cannot trip or restrain a person, as they are indeed illusions, would it simply mean the creature "acts" as if it is tripped or restrained,but not suffer from the actual affect of being prone/restrained?

There are 3 kinds of illusions. 1) Sensory: essentially, holograms, loudspeakers; they have a real world non-tangible presence. Minor Illusion, Silent Image, Major Image, Mirror Image.... 2) Phantasms: exist only in the minds of the target. Phantasmal Force, Phantasmal Killer... 3) Shadow Magic: A sensory illusion with some degree of tangibility. Phantom Steed, Shadow Blade, Illusory Dragon (Xanathar's)... Some spells draw from more than one of the sub-categories, Mirage Arcane. Arguably, if an illusion is capable of dealing psychic damage, it is at least partially phantasmagorical in nature. Chains: the target believes itself to be bound, so will fold it's wings and/or twist them into awkward position, rendering itself incapable of flight (potentially, it could make an escape check vs. the spells DC; but that's DM interpretation, not how the spell is written). And they could squeeze like a python for psychic damage. Prone: the target would believe it had been tripped, so would most likely throw itself to the ground; but even if the DM decided it didn't actually fall prone and was still standing from the perspective of observers, it would still act as if it were prone, i.e. had its movement restricted by full body contact with the ground (half move, disadvantage on attacks, granting advantage to melee attacks, but not gaining disadvantage vs. ranged attacks, since it wasn't actually prone.) Bridge: non-tangible illusion, gravity, sudden stop, bludgeoning damage. If the chasm were also part of the illusion, the damage would be psychic, and the 1d6 is actually appropriate because of the 10'x10' limitation of the spell. Another consequence of the size limitation, is that you will never bind a creature bigger than large. Rendering a target restrained and blind isn't quite as powerful as paralyzing them (hold person), but allowing this spell to cause those effects makes this spell more utile because of its greater range of target-ability. Sadly, you can't increase the damage caused or multi-target by casting with a higher level slot. Hold Monster is only 5th level and multi-targets when up cast and targets everything. Phantasmal Force should probably be a 3rd level spell if allowed to blind and restrain, but if it only does it's 1d6, then really its only a 1st level.

i love phantasmal force. that being said, it seems like the spell would suggest that if theres an illusion of chains attached to it, it would feel the chains, might even takes some damage moving away from where chains were, but once moved, either through voluntary (trying to throw themselves at the end of the chains) or forceably (thunderwave) , it'd come to the conclusion it slipped out of said chains (or some other reasonable explanation).

In a one shot, a player cast Suggestion on the final boss. "Go far away" was the suggestion. I failed the save, by one point. The final boss went far away. And yes, it completely stopped the final boss fight. But the glee and happiness of the player, who had been trying to use that spell in various campaigns for years without it working (the bad guy always made the save), was worth it. He was playing a little kobold, and hadn't had much to do all session, but in that moment he felt so powerful.

Man, polymorph has changed. I remember when it could turn almost any creature into just about anything. Plus, if the target failed their save, they would be stuck for life, and forget their prior existence. This was totally game breaking. Wizard creates a device that contains a copy of their memories, casts polymorph on themselves to become a dragon, intentionally fails their save, then picks up the magic gizmo. Poof, dragon-wizard, possibly a much younger one than before polymorphing.

The polymorph spell can be better when combined with the spell Rary's Telepathic Bond. You could cast the spell before turning your allies into an cat, and still have the psychic link carry over. So now you've got a otherwise seemingly harmless cat, that could wanderer around a town, or a camp, without generally expecting to be attack on sight. And the player who's the cat, can relay everything they see or hear to the others. And of course communicate with the others.

A gem i discovered recently is Dragons Breath, which is a second lvl spell. It seems like a pretty mediocre spell on first look, but one of the options is 3d6 poison damage in a 15ft cone. If your a necromancer, toss it on a zombie after the other ones have grappled your enemies, and that last zombie is suddenly a lot more dangerous, cause it breaks down the action economy. (edit) Forgot to mention that all undead are immune to poison damage. That little Cr1/4 zombie that had a poor chance of doing 1d6+1 (only +3 to hit), is now pumping out 3d6 (save for half) in an AoE, AND it doesn't require you to use your action or bonus action (except the two bonus actions to get this going because of casting time and directing zombies.) because Animate Dead says the zombies will keep doing the last order you gave them if a new order isn't given. If you don't even want to worry about the concentration and have an hour of prep, glyph of warding with the spell glyph, and suddenly your doing all this with only a 2nd and 3rd level spell slots. My players are not gonna be happy >:) Bonus Spell: Heat Metal, if cast on someones armor, is guaranteed damage, cause the con save to drop it, doesn't matter if it takes 10min to take off your plate armor.
@vadaritis

That's actually quite brilliant. Cause you your familiar only needs to be within 100ft of you to cast Dragons Breath on it, cause you can use the familiar to deliver touch spells if it is within that distance. I was sure the familiar couldn't do that, but i double checked and it works, thank you for that. >:) Now my players should be wary of local fauna as well.
@vadaritis
@vadaritis 5 жыл бұрын
That's my point exactly, i was merely pointing out the range limitation for you to cast the spell through your familiar to buff itself with the breath weapon. Specifically the familiar cannot attack, but activating a spell effect is something separate. As my groups dm, i would point it out to my spellcasters if they are having trouble, but only after this next session, as they fight a lowlevel spellcaster.

I can see someone using heat metal on a person in full plate armor. The DM saying "The soldier's armor slowly begins to glow a bright yellow as his armor heats up. All you can hear are his blood curdleing screams as he realizes that he is getting cooked alive. The smell of burning flesh fills the air and he finally dies. You got 20xp and a lump of gold that used to be his coins."
