As the eldest granddaughter of a family with both Romany gypsy and Irish traveller heritage 15 year old Santana is expected to follow strict rules for girls and set a good example for her younger family members.
No longer at school she spends a lot of her time cleaning the family chalet with the occasional visit from a teacher for home schooling.
About to turn 16 she is planning a lavish sweet 16th birthday party - complete with a dress made by Thelma and a fifteen tier cake decorated with fireworks. Santana has got a lot to celebrate. Proud Grandma Bridie - the current family matriarch - explains that turning 16 means Santana will be allowed a bit more freedom and is trusted to be let off her cleaning duties for a few more hours a week.

It’s both, they’re a marginalised community who are stigmatised (stereotyping can lead to unfair judgement and assumptions) but they’re also often poor due to other systemic issues which leads to crime. I’m Canadian and watch this series and feel horrified over their entitlement. The fact they feel laws don’t apply to them, live recklessly, then have the audacity to claim police and society are against them? Are they serious? Marrying off underage children to delinquents and girls spending a life of slavery and poor education. All while being sexualized. Wow!!! Poor Gypsies! Not to mention the expectation of living off peoples property and moving their families every other day just to avoid property taxes and rent ?! Also… maybe if the men treated their women as equals I wouldn’t have to say this but why do most of the men look like they’ve got an extra chromosome while their girlfriends and wives are gorgeous!!

I’m English and although some gypsy families are alright,we have several gypsy camps where I live. The girls have rules, their not allowed to drink and have to ask permission from their parents or husbands to do anything but the boys can do what they like when they like, they have no boundaries. They cause havoc throw rocks at bus windows and off motorway bridges onto cars, go into shops and just take whatever they want, they break into sports centres to use the showers and facilities and often treat pets badly . They have their own laws/beliefs that contradict British law ,it’s their culture but it makes life a misery for the regular British taxpayer who’s council tax etc goes up to cover the cost of the damage they cause.

They pull in 20 rvs to a PUBLIC area in someone's back yard and wonder why the police show up. It's really shocking. And they abuse animals left, right and center. Why should they not have to pay for land? Why should everyone just move so they can whip horses in a dangerous race while cars are swerving and throwing beer cans on the road??? Don't want to be treated with disrespect, then have some self respect and personal accountability

@@meeeka That's understandable. But at the same time, mature adults do not approve of older men preying on beautiful innocent young women under the age of consent. It's grotesque. He's a repeat offender criminal and is six years older than she. In her early teens, she is light-years away from twenty years old. Your people rationalize this behavior, but it's never okay for a young girl of fifteen to marry an older man six years her senior. It's called rape when a man has sex with an underage child, and it's disgusting. There is no reason to marry a child off so young, when you should be caring about her future and encouraging them to wait until she's eighteen. If this man really loved and cared about her, he'd insist on waiting that long so she has time to mature and be a good wife. She'll likely have two kids before she turns eighteen, if she marries at fifteen. Does he even have a steady reliable job, or will he take the easy road and turn back to crime, leaving her all alone to raise and support their children. This is pedophilia and the opposite of loving respect. She's just a child.

I have no issues with anyone wanting/keeping "Traditions" etc. but like everyone else, the law is for everyone to follow! The issue I have with most Travelers/Gypsies is the arrogant attitudes and NOT allowing their children to receive an education! When you know better you do better and if the only things these kids are taught are what they see or overhear from all the uneducated and criminal aspects around them, the cycle just continues? I've seen shows where the Traveller/Gypsy kids/teenagers can't read or write but are expected to raise a family and exist in a world that's just passing them by... Allow your children to receive an Education if you truly love them. Ignorance is no excuse in the eyes of the law regardless of what country they happen to be in.

The girls are taken out of school to become housewives, get married barely after puberty to older men that think of them as property, and at a young age are taught to dress, act, and dance like little strippers to impress men in hopes of getting married before 18 so that they’re not “too old” for guys to want them. All while acting a fool in public and disrespecting the public. Again, love these videos, but they sure don’t make the gypsy culture look great. Just enforcing a stereotype.

I agree with you. It's just like in the US with people who think of themselves as sovereign citizens. Well if you don't like the laws/rules here you can move to another country? If not you have to live by the letter of the LAW, don't whine and bitch about it

The animal abuse being normalised in their community is disgusting. This should be evidence enough to not let them have animals in their "care". And marrying off kids to grown men!? So much abuse 💔

I’d say the fact that he’s five years older than her and shes 15 at that times more concerning 😅 isn’t it better to be concerned about our own kind first

Lady, the prison isn’t ‘disgusting’. Your little girl is in tears because your husband broke the law on multiple occasions and so you are all heavily restricted by prison rules. Stop passing the buck.

I was married at 16 ( I was pregnant and being very strict Irish Catholic ) I'm 60 now and My Husband has passed away. At 16 you don't even know yourself, My advice, for whatever it's worth is to wait. The fact that her future husband is in and out of prison is very frightening

At fifteen, she is still a child. That is way too young to get married, imo. And I am surprised that so many of the men and boys featured in this episode are more focused on crime than working a job and doing honest work. You can see the toll it takes on their families. smh. But kudos to Mary for choosing what is right for her baby and her. 💗

Poor little Chloe! She seems so calm and wise and gets pushed around so much ... My heart breaks considering the futures of all those bright and lovely girls, who soon will get married away and are forced to submit their whole lives to some man they hardly know before the wedding, like pitiful Danielle ...

Visitations aren't done like, all together in a room any more. It's usually virtual or window to window. And if that's not how it operated then, why would grown men pick on another man's daughter dressed like a princess, saying they didn't get the cultural thing. Generally speaking wives and children are fighting topics.

@@paigerowe1090 right, because you could literally have a man next to you for pedophilia and then kids right there? They are smarter than that, than putting other prisoners around or even in view of a child. You aren't even supposed to send pictures to prisoners that might show a child without tops/ bottoms (like a baby in a tub or something even that is their own child) because it could be used for the wrong thing behind prison doors.

I know the anxiety of being late for visiting hours for your father. It was kicking in during that driving scene. I’m a southern American but the way that mom was during the drive would be just like my mom. It’s like this literally dreadful, world is over feeling bc it’s rare you ever get to see them and esp when your little your parents are your entire world, it’s soul crushing. Saying “it’s okay don’t cry” would make it worse so the parent has no choice but to empathize and express the emotions and let it out together. I never got to see him for a long time and mid way after I turned 18 wanting to try to visit him once more (he went far downhill sever paranoid schizophrenia + drug addictions + some intense autism which I am also autistic so don’t be ableist in the comments yall) but he died. I know that feeling deeply especially if you know the days are numbered. Little girl, I hope you are growing up now healing and growing. Stay in touch with your emotions and be mindful. It’s the best thing you can do for trauma
