How most of us learned about the Baker Rifle......Sharpe.
@99IronDuke4 жыл бұрын
I read the Sharpe novels and watched the TV shows, but I was reading about the Peninsular War in particular and the Napoleonic wars in general long before that. For those who liked Sharpe could I recommend the 'True Soldier Gentleman' novels of the British Army in the Napoleonic wars by Dr Adrian Goldsworthy, who also happens to be a legitimate expert on the ancient Roman army.

I am one of them, but thankfully have not sat on what lies therein... sparked the interest and studied more.

Doing further research on youtube to refute the idea that you could pull three shots in a minute from a rifle gun. (In the show Sharpe demonstrates to a group of infantry how to fire a musket at such a rate by disregarding the ramrod and simply tapping the butt of a musket to drop the ball) Now that's soldiering.
@katyg387311 ай бұрын
@@jimvargaco.6344soldiers are true inventors. If you had to get three off in a minute or you were dead you’d damn well learn to get three off in a minute. There’s accepted ways of doing things and then there’s actual ways of doing things.

You're not understanding what I'm saying. A musket is SMOOTH BORE while a rifle is RIFLED. You can spit load a musket if you are using patch and ball loads, though some infantry of the period opted for oversized ball instead of a patch in which case you can't. But a RIFLE is RIFLED! You cannot spit load a rifle with ammunition of the correct size for the rifling. Not possible.@@katyg3873

I see both sides... While they are well written stories and I enjoyed them greatly as they came out. They and their subsequent TV episodes leave some with "enough information to be dangerous" (tongue in cheek there)... For every person, like yourself, who goes on to study and learn, there are many more who do not and are left with "Bite, Pour, Spit and Tap"..... and then go on to reference said activity as history. This is where the "friction" comes in. Measured and respectful acknowledgment followed by kind introduction to reality is my preferred technique to attempt to steer perception....
@yorkshirelad52804 жыл бұрын
britishmuzzleloaders I can imagine it could be quite annoying for your channel as you put lots of effort into the historical accuracy. Personally the main reason I came to your channel was for the accuracy and I enjoy watching someone who has a real passion for the periods and firearms I’m also interested in. I understand the “friction” I used to be a living historian of multiple periods and would have to fend off multiple film references, I always found that it was however a great way and ice breaker to educate people in the realities of that period.

@britishmuzzleloaders4 жыл бұрын
As mentioned, there are works such as Baker's that detail the different positions... The Official manuals state those used for Line infantry in clouding the kneeling. In the case of that position, it is different to that seemingly practiced by LI in that the elbow is supported by the knee... a must for decent shooting.. The kneeling for the line was more about lowering the front rank to allow for the rear rank to fire over them than giving an increase in accuracy.

I think the rifleman at 8.17 has heard quite enough of the bugler!

sorry BML, I heard recently that closing videos really early (like after watching the intro sketch again some time later for a good laugh) affects the visibility of the video for later viewing, I'll watch more of it instead

I have no idea... Thanks for watching though!

Where did you get the uniform from?

Details are in Part 6 of the Kit series on the Channel.

We need to get a petition started so that Pedersoli can start making Baker rifles. No offense but I would like options besides the Rifle Shoppe who I still haven't gotten any real communication from and an Indian smoothbore copy which defeats the purpose of wanting the accuracy of the Baker in the first place.

I agree... there are many who think the same and many who have tried repeatedly. Add yours to the chorus for sure!

Where, when and how was the cockade worn?
@britishmuzzleloaders4 жыл бұрын
Part Two will cover that... Green in colour, on the cap above the black leather one that everyone wore.

It seems you need to remove that green cocade from you uniform if we’re aiming for verisimilitude. 😂😉 Thanks for the video. I’ve always been fascinated by the peninsular war.

Sorry for my indulgence but I could see what you have produced here as Instructional troop training into a Movie directed by Peter Jackson about the Baker Rifle and the 95Th Rifles ending at Le Haye Sainte . But I imagine laborious hours of work in a concise 18 min vid

@@britishmuzzleloaders I think he's saying this would benefit a mainstream Hollywood movie about Waterloo. Moustache preening may be in order.
