The 1914 Christmas Truce narrative has over time achieved mythological status. However, did it really take place? Did British and German soldiers actually play football in no-man's land?
THE WESTERN FRONT - CHRISTMAS EVE 1914
As Christmas Eve approached, the battlefields of Flanders were blanketed with a light dusting of snow. Some officers of the British Expeditionary Force in the front lines began ordering their men not to fire unless fired upon. This policy came to be known as “live and let live,” and it would be adopted on an ad hoc basis throughout the war, especially in less active sectors.
British soldiers on duty that evening began to see strange things from the enemy lines opposite them. Germans were placing small fir trees and bright lanterns outside their trenches - and suddenly a chorus of voices singing Christmas songs could be heard. They sang hymns such as “Stille Nacht” (“Silent Night”), and the British began to respond with Christmas carols of their own.
