Battlefield 1’s depiction of Passchendaele is scarily accurate, sure it is battlefield but it captures the same terror and chaos with holes 6 feet deep filled with poison gas and water dead bodies rotting away and covered in mud. Battlefield 1 is a masterpiece of a game that holds up way better than Battlefield V which was a dumpster fire.

My Great-Grandfather died a week before the end of The Battle of Passchendaele. Went to visit Tyne Cot to see his name written on the wall there and mark the 100th year of his death, what was left of him was buried however the makeshift graveyard was blown up and his body lost so he's listed on the wall as appose to on a grave.

we dont celebrate " getting slaughtered for a British cause in WW1", we remember the losses and we make sure that those soldiers who have died for us and our freedom are remembered. we don't only remember the sacrifices of the first world war during remembrance day, we remember the second as well as the wars that are happening now, and those soldiers who are fighting at the moment..

We didn't die for freedom, if we did it certainly wasn't ours. Also, we had no choice to go. Kind of ironic. Ultimately, we died for no real reason in Canada except Britains Imperialism and European stupidity. Then we had to do it again 20 years later for the same reason. We don't celebrate in Canada, we remember, past, present, and future, the dead, the horrors, and the stories, so we can't forget what happened. Yet, despite the hundreds of thousands dead and having no choice to go we have a quiet pride, because ww1 is what gave us a national identity and symbols, independence, and for the first time equal respect from Europeans. Canada as it is today can't exist without WW1 and 2, it's just not possible. We understand that, so we bow our heads and remember to show respect for the dead and silently thank them because of the dichotemy of it. The war was horrible, but it was our baptism of fire, and we understand that it was both senseless and neccisary, so we give thanks. It's a way to respect the dead while simultaniously showing appreciation for the sacrifice. Canada had no choice to go, and died in droves for a war half of us were against and were conscripted to fight. By the end of it we won respect from Europe, had a unified national identity, had a unified cultural identity that was seperate from Europe and America, and won our independence. All reinforced in ww2. So, we show admiration for the dead and thank the sacrifice, while remembering the senseless nature of it.

My great great great uncle John Beckett passed away on 12th October the first day of 3rd ypres, after being in service for a year. His brother and several others were hit by the same shell in the middle of the menin road on a fatigue party and one other passed away as a result of it. His younger brother was sent back to Australia in 1918 with a minor leg injury. He was 31 years old. After all the time ive spent researching them and war history in general it never ceases to fascinate and stun me

My great grandad fought on the British side in WW1 and told a story of paschandaele. They were marching through the battlefield after the battle and saw a british soldier stuck in the mud, they tried to pull him out with men and then horses but the mud was so thick he was stuck and they had to leave him. Hour by hour he sunk more and more into the mud. One day they walked past him again and the mud was up to his belly. They still couldn’t do anything to help him. A few days later they walked past him again and the mud was upto his chin and he was desperately trying to move in the mud and create an opening, but couldn’t do anything. The next time they walked past only the top of his hair was showing and he had drowned in the mud, what a horrible and slow way to die.

I went to Ypres when I was a student overseas in the UK. I will never forget it. To this day, farmers frequently turn up unexploded munitions and pile them up at the end of their driveways for disposal.

Dan Rook Canada wouldn’t be the same without the sacrifices we did during WW1. Our actions during the war, especially Vimy and Paschendale, gave Canada legitimacy and a real place on the world stage not only as a British territory, but as a distinct people. We showed the world that we weren’t depending on the brits anymore. This led to the Westminster Status of 1931 which gave us even more autonomy and then later the return of our constitution in 1982. Furthermore, the 1931 Westminster status didnt only benefit Canada, but also all of important overseas possessions of the British (except India, sadly). All of this because of the men who, being from Canada or any other British dominion, sacrificed their life on the battlefields.

Canadians had the biggest part in the 3rd battle of Ypres aka the battle of passchendaele, the 1st Canadian division captures it almost entirely by themselves, but in this video you seem to show that the British did it with barely any help
