My grandmother still had this bedroom furniture until she died in 2006. The same exact vanity and headboard. People saved a lot more money then because they had well made furniture that would last the length of their whole marriage/life.

I hear you. People are much freer with money and debt now. My grandmother died in the 80's and I still remember getting my finger caught in the wrangle for drying their clothes. She had a posh glass washboard too. I remember when they cleared out my granddad's shed, they found a MP40 from the war. I tried to get it deactivated but they took it anyway.

My grandfather died recently,he had collected so much stuff, I ended up with an ottoman from 1920s a mahogany bar, beautiful it's also 1920s a wealth of music equipment all classic, and in good nick, but the most amazing things I found aside from his knife and assorted bits from his navy days, was a collection of magazines in mint unread condition, he began buying them the year I was born, and collected the whole lot, me n my grandad didn't get in so well in life, he expected to much , but I like to think these magazines called "The book of life" were a non speaking grandads way of giving me all the answers, I'm the first born, he was so disappointed, anyway theres 130 odd copy's, still got the advertising cards inside for subscriptions etc..I wonder if there valuable. To be fair it was me with him at the end, he didn't see that coming, painful being on death duty to a grandad you were once so close to. People are strange, if I'm honest I'm going to sell everything apart from my great granny's jewelried miniature Bible, to my granny's bits, my grandad didn't give a monkeys about me. He had a tough life, anyway who do I pay...for the session,😁therapy defeniatly needed

I still have and use my mum and dads post war austerity wardrobes for man and woman and dressing table complete with mirror and a piece of furniture for keeping sheets etc ,is it called an ottoman . I’m sure that’s what my late mum called it ,my family say throw it all out but I love it and it does the job ,Dads wardrobe has shelves on one side marked shirts and a draw marked socks etc ,I am nearly 70 ,I bet some vintage household would love this furniture.

My grandparents had separate rooms for the longest time but when they moved in the same room, they slept in separate beds as well. Their own rooms were to their own taste, decorated feminine pretty pastel for my grandmother, my grandfather had richer masculine rich colors and more wood in his room. I found it quite hilarious my grandmother wanted nothing to do with sleeping with my grandfather. I’m shocked that I’m here and that they had two daughters... 🤭

MzClementine Two daughters over how many years? :) Now I'm curious. Were they from the start of the marriage? I knew a couple who had different bedrooms. They clung to the marriage long after they could hardly bear to be near each other. They had one child. On the other hand, LBJ had a bedroom apart from his wife because he was up all hours making phone calls and she couldn't sleep through the noise. And then there is snoring. Mustn't jump to conclusions. :D

MzClementine I do not share a bedroom with my husband. I have a chronic pain condition and also insomnia. I was not getting sleep with his snoring and he wasn’t either with me tossing and turning. So I went to one of our guest bedrooms and I’ve never slept better. Don’t worry about our love life it still happens❤️. If you look farther back in history wives always had their own bedrooms and privacy. Only the very poor slept together. Sleeping in the same bed is actually a new thing.

While there were some very different things, such as doors mounted on opposite sides or rooms being laid out differently, this house was almost exactly like the house the 1940s family lived in.

I think there would've been wallpaper on the walls, not paint. I remember the eiderdowns. But why twin beds in the master?

The videos are just too short to give proper information about what really happened during war times. The narrator just touch the tip of the iceberg by talking a little bit about rationing but if they're going to start why not give us a little more meat on the bone, LOL.

There are many other vids that detail the rationing during ww1. I was amazed when I watched them. Devastated about the pets. I would have run away with my dogs and kitties. I live in Florida, 60 yrs old. Want to visit London and thereabouts one day. Gotta learn " Brit" speak!
