Both types of engines found their niche deployments. The "English" centrifugal are more compact and excellent for turbine rotor craft and auxiliary power units. The "German" axial flow has proven to be far more useful in turbojet and turbofan powered high speed aircraft and electric power generation. Love 'em round engines!

3 things never mentiond, in no paticular order 1 to be accepted into milliatry service an engine had to pass the 100 hour test. 2 swept wings are not required at sub mach speeds. 3 the theory of atom migration at high temps would not be fully understood until the electron microscope appeared making the axial jet viable, to say that Mr Whittle was not aware of the axial jet is wrong. please refer to books by Stanley Hooker for early jet engine development and Teddy Petter for aircraft designe.

The P.51 was a credit to American engineering - attention to detail; low tolerances; CAD/CAM metal making.... Packard Merlins better than RR; the Brits dropped bearings into a bin - the Americans had a curving chute to GENTLY lower them - it made a difference.

Germany had TWO operational jet warplanes by ear end, the other being the Arado 234 bomber / reconnaissance aircraft, again using the Jumo engine. Britain could have had a second jet aircraft, the de Haviland Vampire using the DH Goblin engine but unlike Gloster had other aircraft in production that took precedence. The Lockheed..? The Americans had a flight of aircraft in Italy, but they were quickly withdrawn as not service ready - and like the British had piston engined fighters capable of combating even the best German designs, with better in pre production.

The Socialist government elected after ww2 were desperate for wood for reconstruction, we had none, Russia had shed loads, hence Harold Wilson, who was minister for trade did a deal with the Russians, we gave them about four of the latest Rolls Royce jet engines, then the Russians gave us some wood. Little surprise then that Russian jet MIGs appeared soon afterwards and would go on to perform rather well in the Korean war . Wilson was always suspected of being a Communist, but nothing proven, he was also accused of a long term affair with his press secretary, all of course strenuously denied. Only a few weeks ago this was actually admitted to. A biography of Wilson is a good read .

Well Germany won , simple as that . Building that under war conditions is quite impressive , the Brits had unlimited recourses and build a flying boat that was barely faster than a prop . They catched up in mid 1945 , but the war was already over . And they lacked in swept wing design, same as Vampires , F-80 and so on . F-86 and Mig 15 got swept wings and they wiped the floor with Meteors and F-80's in the Korean war . The Me262 was a good design and the engines were the right one's, axial was the future . They just had not the right materials to make propper heat resistant alloys , the Jumo engines were not very reliable . That's the only downside I would say , in terms of armament it was build to destroy large bombers . For fighters they could easily equip them with 15 or 20mm guns , that should not be a problem or a negative point .

The Meteor is the clear winner in at least two important categories that never seem to be discussed in these forums. It was the first jet to enter military service that wasn't partially built by slave labourers who frequently died due to the appalling conditions they were forced to live and work in. Secondly, it was the first jet to enter service that wasn't designed to defend a regime that was heavily engaged at that time in the genocide of the Jewish population of Europe and Eurasia (and sundry other minorities who they hated) . Of course the bloody wehraboos can disagree, but they know I'm right. Hardthasher forever! I'll see myself out.....

If you look at what was actually being accomplished, with reference to jet engines, the Germans were running a distant Third by January 1944 - the jet engine development race was between Great Britain and the U.S. - both producing reliable, high thrust (for the time) engines with sufficient handling margins, that allowed normally skilled pilots to fly them without excessive losses. In early 1944, Stanley Hooker, the Head Jet Guy at Rolls-Royce, visited the U.S., and found that G.E. had 2 4,000 lbf thrust jets running - the Centrifugal I-40 (J33), and the axial TG-180 (J35). Westinghouse had the axial Model 19 (J30) in production, and was about to run the Model 24 (J34). Hooker saw that if they were going to keep up, Rolls would have to step things up, and on his return, began development of the Nene (5,000 lbf thrust), and the Derwent (A scaled-down Nene that would fit in the Meteor. The Germans were still fighting with the BMW 003 and Juno 004 - their compressor and turbine aerodynamics were poor, with low compression ratios per stage in the compressors, high pressure drops in the turbines, very poor compressor stall margins, and low efficiencies - The lack of what would now be called Strategic Materials didn't help, but wasn't a factor in the innate design problems. There's a reason why the engines that came out of the 1944 U.S. - U.K. "race" - the J34, J33, J35, Nene, Derwent, and Goblin stayed in production through the 1950s (1980s, if you count the Soviet and Chinese developments of the VK-1 (Uprated Nene) turbojet of the MiG-15 and MiG-17. No, the U.S. and U.K didn't shove jets out into combat service - we weren't desperate, and losing the war.

Gloster Meteor was far behind the ME 262. The British don't like this! Same with rockets and Space Flight. Germans were far ahead! All British , American and Russian Jet technology was stolen from the Germans at the end of the war! The aircraft had fallen victim to the then unknown concept of metal fatigue? Haven't you heard of the Liberty Ships at the NRM? The phenomenon of metal fatigue was well know by the time the Comet was being designed. Indeed, the first tests for metal fatigue took place in the 1850s in Germany. The reason the Me262's engines failed after such a short time was that the Germans had to use inferior materials because of the bomber campaign.

Hitler overthought invading Russia. Knowing Russian passion for the motherland would rule out the three army groups and demand an overall thrust directly into Moscow. This would have damaged Russian moral more than anything. The supreme traitor FDR prevented the Japanese from attacking from the east, which was Stalin's greatest worry. FDR was a closet communist. He saved Stalin, whom he idolized and protected. History is written by the victors, and they were in some instances worse than the enemy.

The title is misleading. The Meteor was not the only Allied jet fighter of WW2. The British also developed the de Havelland Vampire, a single engine, axial compressor fighter. And the Americans had the Lockheed P-80, also a single engine jet, though with a GE centrifugal compressor engine modeled on the Whittle Powerjet. The latter saw some service on the Italian front but was soon grounded after some crashes. Besides the Me 262, the Germans deployed the Arado 234 in two and four engine versions as a bomber and reconnaissance plane, and the single-engine (but mounted above rather than in the fuselage) He 163, which Eric Brown considered the best fighter of WW2.

The criteria should be operational deployment...the 262 was first deployed in April 1944 with a maximum speed of 600mph while the Meteor came into use in July with a top speed of around 450mph. It saw limited service serving to intercept V1 rockets and only being used for ground attacks before the end of the war. The 262 by comparison accounted for 300-450 Allied aircraft despite its limited availability.

600 mph Me 262? NONSENSE. German development stopped with the late war collapse, Meteor development was continuous and rapid. Initial Meteor 450 mph speed was with primitive non production engines in a few pre-production airframe examples, the tail wheel 262 with undeveloped initial engines was just as bad. The long nacelle Derwent engine Meteor F3s were doing 585 mph by May 1945.
