Matt, Great channel. Since you take on those very old restorations, I thought you may want to tell those that wish to get into our hobby that there are dangers removing old body filler and paint. I'm sure there are a lot of viewers who are unaware that old body filler contained asbestos. It can be very dangerous to grind that stuff out without proper protection and it can contaminate your whole shop.

Hey Matt & Mike Good to see you two working on a project. But Mike, We are still waiting to see your Hot Rod Project ! Matt, I have seen you remove several transverse springs, but I never see you using a spring spreader. What to you use to put the spring back on it's shackles ? I noticed one of the shock connecting dog bones got blown out. You know you can take tapered joints like that apart without damaging them with a BFH hitting the end of the loop that has the tapered hole. I sometimes have them pop ritht out with only one hit and no damage to anything. The announcement about live shows on the last Sunday of the month sounds like fun. Hope Kate will be joining in on at least some of those. She is such a hoot sometimes. Maybe you can have guest come in for some of those shows. Maybe your neighbors ? Giggles on that happening. Oh one more thing. When I dropped the front end of my 46 coupe Over 50 years ago I used longer shackles aquired from the junk yard. Dropped axles were not even on the market back then. Be safe, Well and Warm EVERYBODY

The reason earlier models did not had a bump stop, was that the spring was above the axle. And you could almost not get any metal to metal contact on the suspension parts, in the original setup. The 41-to 48 the axle hits the frame, and in the best situation you get a bent axle och big markings in the frame. Worst case the axle breaks off. So i mount cut down or new low bump stops now,(only got a damage frame ;-)).

Ford was so funny about some things. Mainly buggy springs and mechanical brakes. Before both were finally replaced Ford re-engineered and modified them to the point where the fixes were more complicated than the replacement. Henry passed away in 1947 with the '48's already in production. Look at the changes in '49. 2 tools I never see people using that we always had in 1960's and older shops. 1. points files. and 2. spindle dust cap removing tools (look like big pliers with sharp jaws. They save a lot of dented caps.

@Mercmad
@Mercmad 3 жыл бұрын
YEP! early fords were not the smoothest and when the springs got worn the car tended to bounce over bumps. Polishing the spring leaves makes another huge difference. What the suspension rule of thumb is " get the softest easy bouncing springs then select the shocks required for the type of ride you want . "

I don't think that's a drain plug on the 302, on my car that an oil level sensor. That looks like a later pan for a fox body with the duel sump. May have been like that on 70s mustangs but I have a full size ford pan that is only single sump with no sensor hole. Looks like the builder needed a pan to clear the steering rod. I can't remember the bolt size or thread for the oil level sensor, but I think it was the same as an O2. Good luck, if the motors junk I have a decent 351 4V that would bolt right in. Need reseal and assembly. Good luck on the project.
