Don't call it "an American car", old boy. That makes you sound like many Americans, who believed Carroll Shelby's blarney about AC having been but a "mere subcontractor" and from whom he had "bought some parts". AC adapted their last generation Ace--the Ruddspeed AC Ace--to the Ford 260. Shelby went over to Thames-Ditton in the autumn of '61 and stayed there until the new year, so that the car could be track-tested before he signed his contract with AC boss Charles Hurlock. In that February 5, 1962 contract/letter of understanding, both parties agreed that the car would be AC-badged and be known as the "Shelby AC Cobra". It didn't take Shelby long to renege on his contract, by putting on snake badges and attempting to suppress AC's role in providing the body, the chassis, the interior... Yes, Shelby did contribute to the gradual improvement of the car--mainly through racing experience, but so did AC, which ran its own Cobras at Le Mans in '63 and '64. The car is an Anglo-American hybrid, and the earlier cars with the Ruddspeed Ace body are essentially English cars with American drivetrains. Only the big block cars had a greater Shelby involvement Lovely Cobra! Those chrome wire wheels are the icing on the cake!

As it maybe as you have said it was Shelby who chose AC instead of the MGB or Triumph or Sunbeam . The man knew exactly what he was doing , but as now we all know AC needed Shelby more than he needed AC ! The 260/289 fits just as well in the other three English vehicles . It was the engine that made the little AC into what it has become as a Legend for the next Hundred Years ! Give credit where credit is due . It was a chicken farmer from Texas who chose about a dozen street hot rodders from southern California and that fabulous little Ford Windsor that turned the automotive world upside down ! That my friend is what made that little known AC what it has become . Nothing more and nothing less . May God Bless America & England !

Never did see the brewha ha about the AC . in 289 form it cant live with my Sunbeam tiger with the same engine box and axle as standard but my Sunbeam goes on to have incredible weather protection , fully adjustable with over 130 different driver positions back rest seat height , pedal arrangement and steering column . Its got incredible boot space for decent amounts of luggage , a factory fitted hard top and it can seat 4 people due to the sensible design . The AC cant do anything like that in fact it hasnt even got a roof !
