The 1989 Honda NX250: A Motorcycle Ahead of its Time

I have the 1987 model, AX1. Bought it around 2005. It was second hand, imported from Japan in 1997 and rotting since then in the dealers garage. To this day i am still baffled how this bike has not crumbled apart after almost 40 years, with daily commuting use since 05. I think these bikes are what gave Honda its name and legacy as a quality manufacturer

@@AdventurePiggy the odometer is stuck at 27k km for as long as i have the bike. At some point i did buy that replacement part on the front wheel (no idea how its called in english) but it got chewed after 250km (it is a plastic ring, extremely prone to failure). This and the CDI thing are the only problems i've ever had

Great video! As a happy owner of one, i can confirm it´s a great bike. Not only for dirt roads but it´s excellent for travel too, it can cruise at 65 mph easily and top speed of 85/90. I´ve the MD21 engine (Same engine as the tuned up version AX-1, which was installed on late NX250´s getting the same engine as the Japanese version). A very capable and fun to drive machine that hold trough the years very good. (Mine has 60.000 miles on the clock and still going, like the first day)

@@luisblandonmorales6629 I would use a site like www.babbittsonline.com/oemparts/c/honda_motorcycle/parts to find the part number and then find the parts one ebay or similar. Everything I saw for the XL250s said the standard bore was 74mm, but I don't know much about that model. Good luck on the rebuild!

i have an 1989 Nx250 its fun, i have had to change the jetting in it, do a valve adjustment, and that thing loves to be reved out to nearly red lining. if you want to do trails i recommend you puting an 11 tooth front sprocket o. :-]

It does love to be revved for sure! This one was on loan from a good friend and sees mostly back road and dirt road duty.

I have the Ax-1 got her in 1987 im currently looking for a new engine to replace so i think im going to get the nx250 engine for her hope there isnt a noticeable difference in quality power and longevity between the engines

Mine must have a well sorted front brake, shocked me as the rear lifted off the ground on first grab, now definitely 1-2 finger affair

Being 15 yr old in 89', I used to drool over this bike at the dealer about every Saturday. 2:22 - "25 Year old machine" ??? Assume you meant 35 year old

Oh man! Major oversight on my part! Yes 35 years old. Must have been some optimistic math 😂. There really wasn’t much like this in 1989. It must have really stood out.

You need to ride the more tuned up version of that Honda NX250 Dominator aka AX-1. It is beautiful bike with 2 headlights.

These are getting harder to find over the last 10 years. Love the looks and design like the Transalp has, timeless. But, I worry about sourcing parts. Have you encountered problems?

It belongs to a good friend of mine, but I don’t think he has had any problems, but he has also completely rebuilt a Kawasaki H1 so not sure if he is the best barometer 😂 He also says it’s the most dependable of the bikes he has. Plastics on the other hand may be a challenge.

One of em up for sale for asking price of €1950, seems like a need little bike. Milleage ia amazing which would be nice for my commuter/mess around offroad bike, sadly I kinda have to get rid of my old commuter first sadly it has things that need to be done 🥲 hopefully something like this will be for sale when I can buy it.

It seems that they are a bit more plentiful outside the US since they sold them for much longer, so hopefully it isn’t hard to find one when you are ready. They are fun little bikes.

KLR250 had 6-speed as far as i can remember. NX is still a good bike though
