Asking Andrew Dice Clay to perform and then banning him for cursing is like asking Sam kinison to perform and then banning him for yelling. It's pretty much his thing.

How in the world can anything be a hotter mess than awards shows and autotuned/pitched corrected acts of only lip-synthe acts.... be said to be more a mess than now? Perhaps it is younger people watching this? I know some boomers as I see the 70s as normal and 80s as out there and more commercialized.... still vs today OMG. I merely am commenting and not watching further this mocking of snap-shots of a far superior era than now no matter how you slice and mock things.....

There were definitely some issues with the Mtv awards back then, but you have to keep in mind back them Mtv was rebellious. The Mtv awards were not supposed to be super serious and polished like the Grammy's or other more stuffy awards shows. They were messy and we loved it. Honestly, I would love to go back to a time where Mtv actually play music videos and have unpolished award shows.

The nuances of celebrity and MTV interactions were top notch throughout the mid 80s and early 90s! Musicians were pushing the envelope of what they would do in rehearsal vs the show, I think. This lead MTV to write off certain genres due to big bands antics at the time Thinking the performance where heavy rock band member climbed scaffolding during a speech and then later Limp Bizkit fans throwing stuff at Carson Daily at the Woodstock revival. Crazy times

i remember scanning the '89 vmas wiki before and wtf-ing at not every madonna nomination winning. those vids STILL hold up. like a prayer was not your typical 80s pop album era and this was only the beginning. soon her blond ambition tour and the immaculate collection would propel her into an almost 3 year run of absolute world dominance. not even janet's extremely successful rhythm nation 1814 came close. madonna gave the new decade a much needed fresh direction and identity right before grunge took over in '92 and solidified the 90s as Thee 90s.

1:10 See, here's my problem with comparing "Express Yourself" to "Born This Way" -- if you listen to the lyrics, their themes are completely different. The former is a woman telling her friend that she and her man both need to tell each other how they feel about each other so that true love can blossom between them. It _became_ an anthem of expression when it was co-opted by LGBTQ+, but that wasn't the song's actual theme. "Born This Way", however, is _only_ about free expression in its lyrics.
