I been saying that beef back before social media was SO MUCH messier than it is now. Now we're lucky if we even get a shady subtweet, and stans will discourse for weeks if so-and-so is a "mean girl" for not pretending to be besties with literally every human being they encounter. But back then, bitches were throwing hands, spitting on each other, sabotaging performances, and sometimes even getting into shootouts 😭

Axl made many homophobic comments back in the 80s and 90s (explanation not excuse - Axl has history of childhood SA and I believe at is a diagnose schizophrenic. Like many misguided people of his generation, he channeled that into homophobia) He also had many high profile DV incidences with his partners. Kurt was a feminist with a great deal of hatred for homophobia after growing up seeing his mother being abused and having a very close relationship with his sister who is gay. He tried to just ignore Axl asking them to go on tour but after he started to feel insulted by Kurt, Kurt started publicly stating how he felt about Axl. Apparently Kurt and Courtney shared a similar odd sense of humor and the whole “shut up bïtch” thing was very funny to them.

The beef between them was Kurt’s fault💯 he had every right to not wanna perform with them due to his own beliefs and have his own opinions on them but to publicly bash them simply because he didn’t want to perform started their beef. Axl does have issues but this would’ve never happened if he just said no thanks and went on about his business. But thank god it did and we got an iconic moment from it that had me GAGGED!!!!

@_tia.no.tamera You're kidding me, right? 'Has his problems'? That's what you say when someone has a bad habit and does themselves damage. But once someone's words or actions hurt others, it is not only acceptable but desirable that others stand up to them and stop them. Axl was homophobic, and Kurt was showing support to the LGBTQ+ community. Also, you're saying Kurt should have kept his opinion to himself and moved on. Again, this might have been true if Axl only spoke about Kurt and it was something personal between them; but Axl was speaking against an entire community. It was not just about the 2 of them, it was about people all over the world, so saying Kurt should have kept it private is ridiculous. In this instance, not saying anything about it would be like agreeing with what Axl's saying (or at the very least, it would come off as agreeing with this). Are you saying we should let injustice keep occurring and let people hurt others just to avoid conflict?

This show was like night and day compared to the previous year awards show. It was all about grunge and gangsta rap in 1992. 1991 was all about Motown urban dance music, and adult contemporary alternative. The 90’s had arrived in full effect here for sure.

I was actually mildly surprised to see that Tori Amos was there. At that time, "Little Earthquakes" was her only album out. She didn't have a more mainstream "hit" until "Cornflake Girl" on her second album. I knew "Little Earthquakes" was successful, I just didn't think it was mainstream enough to have a presence on MTV

Happy to see this getting a review. I remember watching this on Australian TV back in the day and remember it being both kinda messy but kinda cool at the same time. The version we got had the preshow and some of the presentations/performances cut out, so its cool to see some of that. I also remember how weird Nirvana's performance was at the time and knowing now that they had this huge beef with Axl Rose it all makes a bit more sense now.

The main thing about these VMAs that gets to me is the fact that Smells Like Nirvana of all songs was nominated for Best Male Video, and it was against Tears in Heaven. I mean, I love Weird Al’s work (I’m self-described as white and nerdy so I kind of have to 😂), and it is a hilarious video, but there is no way he could’ve won over one of the biggest tear jerking songs of the entire decade. Even Al knew he had no chance of winning with competition like that - not to mention Tom Petty and Bruce Springsteen. Thank God that Best Male Video was presented early so that Al’s fans could get over it sooner

@@MultiOdom It means that Kurt Cobain always tried to avoid to become a mere product for the music industry, but once he was dead that was exactly what the industry (and those who inherited his state, I guess) made of him. I was thinking in particular in that collection Converse released years ago with pages of his journals as a cool pattern in the fabric, but there's plenty of examples of how his memory has become a product to sell. At least there were actually talented musicians back then, unlike what we have today.

11:10 appreciate the “Monster Energy Lady” reference, but that’s actually another character Dana did on SNL known as Church Lady.

Hopefully we get a review of the 1985 VMAs at some point because Eddie Murphy was hosting that year and had just as much contempt for the teleprompter gags as he did here.

If Madonna had made a video for the sadly overlooked and forgotten gem Rescue Me, surely that would have got her a Dance Video nomination instead of a Blond Ambition performance from Truth or Dare. So strange that Holiday (originally released on record in 1983) was nominated rather than the 1990 dance pop smash Vogue or Express Yourself performance that recreates the record breaking budgeted video from 1989

I think Kurt Loder might've been making a joke about Andrew Dice Clay with two Native Americans. At the 1972 Academy Awards Marlon Brando won Best Actor and instead of making an acceptance speech he invited a Native American up on stage to read his acceptance speech. It was pretty shocking at the time from what I have heard.

The entire year of 1992 was a hot mess, I was 12 at the time, and even I could tell that the entire culture of America (especially the music) was in the process of crapping all over itself.
