It does not shock me that going from Win98 to Win98SE fixed everything. Win98SE was a massive improvement behind the scenes and native DVD support was one of the categories that got the most of it. In fact, back in the day my upgrade from 98 to 98SE made my daily life a whole lot easier. I probably had about 95% less blue screens and freezes in general after the upgrade.
@snetmotnosrorb39466 жыл бұрын
For me it was the USB support that was the game-changer. As a young teen I thought 98 SE was just a cash-grab along the same lines as Plus! and ignored it without a second thought. Not until years later did I learn that it in fact incorporated significant changes under the hood and was the best DOS-based Windows. So much trouble I could have saved myself.
@AnnabelleTheRose6 жыл бұрын
Yeah Win98 First Ed. was a total train wreck. They had to rush SE out to fix a bunch of issues cos everyone was getting blue screens and also USB issues I remember. Of course this was pre-broadband too so you had to buy a new physical copy (from memory I think MS offered $$$ back deals for people who bought First Ed).

@shockwaveexp34656 жыл бұрын
FischOderAal I guess you got lucky, in Windows 10, drivers are automatically downloaded off Microsoft servers. However, it tends to download outdated versions, which had caused me a variety of video card driver crashes and sound pops. Even if you installed them manually yourself, Windows Update would keep bugging you to install the “latest” version of the driver. Unable to block Windows updates is a big no no for me. Luckily I don’t have to deal with that on Windows 7.
@ClayMann6 жыл бұрын
Win2K as we called it was the first really stable Windows. At least for me and the people I knew. I was so reluctant to upgrade from that but Microsoft has this way of forcing upgrades. I honestly can't see what people are moaning about nowadays. The hardware is generally so good across the board and the OS's from everyone are stellar. At least compared to how it was win95 kinda days. Remember how you'd play a game for a while then get that itch to save because you knew it had been a while and you were due for a crash! lol its not like that anymore thank the broadband gods

Watching Clint use the button to close the tray made my day. As a young person I HATED when anyone would push on the CD tray to close it. It still makes me cringe. Not that you see people using optical media much anymore.
@_miyu6 жыл бұрын
Yup, that was my take away from this vid as well. My biggest pet peeve is pushing the tray to close. @AdmiralSpeedy any force used is bad for the internal gear. They made it do that cuz they knew most idiots would push it, so it better retract on pressure to mitigate damage. An electronic button that sends a signal to the motor is the preferred way. Even Open/Close command send from the software is better than pushing on the gear.

Just press the fucking button and wait the extra 0.002 seconds for it to close FFS.
@AKATenn6 жыл бұрын
They are designed to be closed with a push, what you're not supposed to do is give it more of a push than it needs to start closing on it's own, it won't hurt it more than normal wear unless you force it.
@_miyu6 жыл бұрын
@Hadwell - It's a gear and motor. It was NOT designed to close with a push. They made it activate with resistance so it will be less likely to break. When the gear encounters resistance they allowed it to send a safety signal to the motor. You can avoid this entirely by sending the signal directly with the button. BUTTONS are DESIGNED to be pushed.

DVDs only displayed at 480p/576p for 30fps/25fps, and if you try getting 60fps/50fps then you'll have to use interlacing instead (which was never part of standardised PC resolutions) so you had to have a proper deinterlacer or else you would get that "flicker" (which is more like a shimmer, since it's different to CRT flicker) that he mentioned while watching the cutscenes in Claw. If you had set your monitor to 480p then it would probably look fine but most people used higher resolutions which is why they needed some kind of scaling.

Neat thing about that card was it meant you could watch DVD on linux. This was prior to the break in the DVD encryption.

Jeff Smith I guess that's technically true but, I mean, who actually used Linux as 1997? Even as someone who's been using Linux as my main OS since '11, was Linux even realistically usable in 1997 without a degree in computer science?

Oh god, I remember when my dad brought home a new computer with a DVD drive in it. My younger brother and I thought it was the coolest thing on the planet. We begged him to be able to put in DVDs inside of it and watch movies while he was at work. Now my computer doesn't even have a disk drive.

It did find a bit of a niche as a PC backup device for a while - you could back up your files to DAT.
@hgbugalou6 жыл бұрын
I use to use it simply because my DVD ROM had a digital audio out and my sound card had a digital audio in. Can't say it sounds any different from the analog, though I would assume its easier to post process the stream on your sound card via DA.

I had a musician friend that was so into DAT. He kept getting into all kinds of trouble with the hardware and trying to manage it in his studio. He'd ask me as I was the techy but I had to shrug when it came to DAT, it was just so alien and I knew nothing about it apart from it was fascinating to play with, like future tech now.

Windows 98 Second Edition certainly added a lot of hardware support and newer versions of Windows components/software, so I wouldn't be surprised if that difference alone is why you had problems with the original Windows 98 install.
@KaitoTriforce6 жыл бұрын
I don't think it was the driver, but Windows 98 SE also included its own MPEG-2 Codec. Last but not least newer DVDs contained copy protection systems that are not compatible with older versions of Windows.

@gammemartinarchive22006 жыл бұрын
only if you wanted redbook cd audio.
@Tempora1586 жыл бұрын
Not a "jumper thing", it's the audio cable. This was back when optical drives had a built-in CD audio player and a DAC, so a "CD drive" wasn't just a CD drive, but a full fledged CD audio player that works on its own with just power, no computer required. Nowadays, a CD drive really is just a CD drive as it can only reads the bits off the disc and requires an attached computer to do something with those bits.
@scottaw19816 жыл бұрын
eh, at one point they weren't even needed, which is probably why I don't recall using it more than once..in fact I may of detached one to reclaim a CD rom and was like, whats this for?
@Tempora1586 жыл бұрын
scottaw1981 That's because starting with Windows 98, there is an option in the Device Manager for the CD drive to enable "Digital Audio Extraction", so instead of your 1990s era CD drive decoding the CD audio into analog audio and sending it to the sound card through the analog audio cable, the digital audio data from the CD is sent to Windows 98 through the PATA cable and playback is decoded in software by your CPU. By the 2000s, you had no choice but to use Digital Audio Extraction as CD/DVD drives ceased to have a built-in CD audio player, following the path of the softmodem/winmodem of cutting all the hardware out and having everything done in software by your CPU.

Packard Bell PCs were just the worst. They weren't strictly whitebox; they had fiddly proprietary bits in them that had a way of not working. Most of the PB PCs I saw on store shelves were busted and wouldn't go past the BIOS POST.

This was so wholesome. It really makes me feel more confident about getting into Computer building & retro computer/software exploring & imagining. With thought in mind for others who will surely wanna get in on the fun just as much as I have. As someone who was a late bloomer of 2002 that was not alive & "connected" in that era. With links, molex cablezzzz or a plug of course. I know it would make more sense for me to post this on the PC Build advice video you made but this just feels RIGHT.
@emanatingf4 жыл бұрын
One of the places I'd love to start would be with a 2000's Laptop which could lead into a budget Windows 7 Personal Build. I worry about what I say man. Cause I imagine that it's just so easy to end up making something sell quicker than intended with the amount of demand that it found. I'm sure there is a fair few niche PC games where that applies & I *sincerely* hope for the Best

That Creative PC-DVD woke so many memories. I got Creative DVD encore with DXR2 on Dec 31st 1997 for about $330, played the bundled "Captain Claw" and Wing Commander IV, run three 15 meter cables from my room to the living room, connected the TV to the DXR2 card, went to the video club which had thousands videotapes but less than 20 DVDs, rented 2 of them and it was the most amazing experience! Standalone DVD players costed two to three times more. The first movie I saw was "The Rock" starring Nicolas Cage and Sean Connery.
