Radishes, Spinach, and Peas are some of the vegetables I like to direct sow in my spring garden as soon as I can work the earth. The keys to germination are loose soil and not over watering them. I show you how to quickly plant them and care for them.

I may have to plant out some of that VERY stuff onto my garden tomorrow. I am hoping I can walk tomorrow, my reattached foot is really hurting, nut I worked REALLY hard in my garden TODAY, carrying leaf mold from the trees to the garden beds, last sprimgs wood chips. I filled 6 5gallon buckets too.

Hi Gary, I planted my peas two days before a hard freeze last month, Green Beauty, Golden Sweet, and Sugar Daddy. The last time I looked, I have about 70 healthy vines, 4 inches tall and growing fast. My first batch of potatoes went into the ground two weeks ago. I just topped off my 4x8 raised beds with composted cow manure and need to mix it in. It is on the list for tomorrow. Yesterday I sowed a few trays with lavender. later this week, I will be sowing seeds for Yod Fah, spinach, and beets. I have endive, Swiss Chard, and lettuce ready to transplant into a GreenStalk tower, and other areas in the garden. My onion starts look healthy, and will be ready to transplant soon. Tomato and pepper starts are next on the list, followed by carrots-probably next week. My alpine strawberry plants look healthy, and have their first true leaves. They are probably about a month away from separating and transplanting. A critter got into my seed pack for butterfly bush-nothing left but crumbs, so I ordered Blue Borage and two types of Hollyhocks to grow in their place. Maybe next year, I'll have better luck. Butterfly bush has been on my growing list for three years.

Water just once in March, I’m assuming then you need to put a plastic cover of some sort to stop from the rain over watering the plants then? Here in Washington this is the rainy season and right now we’re getting record amounts of rain this year with flooding rivers, streams, creeks, etc.

If you have no rain and it looks dry...water. But if you get rain with any regularity, just let them go for a good 10-14 days between watering. I planted basil in the house February 17th under grow lights. They came up to the two leaf stage but now they've been sitting there doing nothing for almost 2 weeks. The grow lights are quite close to them. They don't look stressed at all, very healthy looking but just not progressing. This was a fun project I started just to see something grow. I plan on starting all my plants from seeds this year for the first time and I'm getting a little worried. Hope you have some ideas.

I tried using peat starting trays for lettuce, endive, and Swiss Chard. They get soggy, warp, and tear, and bottom watering is a problem, even if you drill holes in the bottom of them. I recommend using plastic starter trays, or flats. If you use a flat tray, the seedlings are easy to tease apart and reseed into larger starting trays cells until you are ready to transplant into the garden. I overseeded, and ended up having to divide the seedlings. I used a sharpened pencil to divide them, a sharpy to press a hole into each cell, and the pencil eraser to gently teased the roots into the holes, then covered the roots with soil. I didn't lose a single transplant, and they all are healthy and ready to transplant into a GreenStalk Tower, and other areas in my garden.

@@jaytoney3007 thank you so much for all your info. I usually start them that way. Actually I usually seed lettuce in garden but some varieties take so long , I though I’d start those inside. I thought the peat pots might make it easier. So are all peat pots a problem with bottom watering in your experience?
@jaytoney3007
@jaytoney3007 2 жыл бұрын
@@Mountaincin Yes, they are not worth spending money on. Use plastic. Depending on the variety of lettuce you are planting, you can expect to get seed starts in 5-7 days, indoors.
