There's this idea in self help circles and relationship advice that you need to be whole and complete on your own beforehand. I initially accepted the idea, but now I really question it. Modern society really wants us to be autonomous individuals without "needing" anyone, but it's not how humans are. We're tribal creatures, and we do need each other. Even when all our physical needs are met, we have deep psychological needs for each other. Look at how many people have depression or anxiety in modern society. Something is wrong. We're the loneliest society ever, and there's lots of people suffering silently. We do need each other. We need each other's laughs, smiles, touch and companionship. Of course it's good to work on yourself, but I doubt the idea that humans are whole and complete on their own. We get into relationships because we want to create a little "tribe". It's hardwired into us on a deep level.
