"The United States is a majorly Christian nation.
But this map, first seen on Mark J Perry's Twitter, answers the burning question of what faiths come in second place in each state.
Based on data from Association of Statisticians of American Religious Bodies, which contributes to the religious portion of the census each decade, the map displays colors for various religions.
As you can see, the Northeast gravitates toward Judaism, while Buddhism engulfs the entire West coast. Twenty states across Middle America and the South practice Islam, making it the largest non-Christian religion in the country. But one following sticks out - Baha'i in South Carolina." *
Cenk Uygur ( cenkuygur), Ben Mankiewicz ( BenMank77. What The Flick?!, TYT Sports), Jimmy Dore ( jimmy_dore. TYTComedy, The Jimmy Dore Show) and Lissette Padilla ( lizzette) break it down on The Young Turks.

One of the main reasons so many Muslims live in conservative states is because theres a lot of religious people in general. Before 9/11 and the drastic rise of Islamophobia many Muslims preferred to move to an area with people like them - religious people, people of the book. They have done this for decades but now it is backfiring on them since those states are where the most evident discrimination is.

i really don't understand why people get frightened as soon as they hear ""sharia"" , sharia literately means THE LAW the same way the bible and the Torah mean THE LAW, but let me explain something to you dear american friends in case you don't know what sharia stand for, to be able to apply it you absolutely need a prerequisite which is social justice first, you cannot enforce a law if you don't first enforce the rules that gives it legitimacy. sharia says that no one should sleep hungry, stay poor, beg for money, rich and wealthy must pay a tax directly to the poor, no one should be left behind, sharia law force people to create wealth and share it with Muslims and non Muslims, it also says that justice must be the base in every aspect of life, regardless of social ranking...etc THEN only you can start enforcing punishment on the greedy, the thieves, the liars...etc sharia law is not about stoning and cutting hands, these are nothing but ignorant FOX news propaganda to tarnish Islam. ironically the same law apply in Christianity and Judaism. the death penalty is in effect in the USA and is LAW, why no one seem to be bothered by it? one last thing, sharia law cannot be applied in non Muslim countries, even the most radical countries like Saudi Arabia and Pakistan, do not apply it, those who you see being executed or stoned should not be, according to the same law, simply because these countries have not fulfilled social justice first. you can't cut a thief's hand when you are a thief yourself.

I expect that the reason Islam is the second most popular religion in many southern states is because those states have large African-American populations, and conversion of African-Americans to Islam is not uncommon. "DOH!" I should have listened before I spoke. Cenk makes the same point at 1:45. The numpty on the left (I do not know his name), who states that he "cannot imagine all that many African-Americans have converted to Islam" is a complete buffoon and I DO wish this show would give him the boot. Apparently it's well beyond his limited cognitive skills to understand that, if 99% of the population identifies as "Christian" and most of the remaining 1% identifies as Muslim, the number of Muslims may be miniscule AND simultaneously, Islam may be the second most popular religion. F***ing Hell! That guy provides proof and evidence that atheists ARE NOT a cognitive elite.

"Christianity" is not a single "religion" or "religious tradition"; it is an umbrella term that encompasses a variety of religions, a lot of which fundamentally contradict each other. based on the phrasing we should actually be seeing Baptists, Methodists, etc. after knocking out the Catholic Church as the #1 largest. That being said this is still an interesting graphic.

Baha'i religion is not a hippy or unity group. like every other religion it has its own laws and rules and teachings. unity of mankind is one of them but also is unity of all religions, equality of men and women, the need for a universal language, the need for universal courts and prosecutors, the need for universal compulsory education. also Baha'is are forbidden of drinking alcohol, using illegal drugs and having sexual activity outside of marriage. next time you want to talk about a religion, at least do some research on it.

The Baha;i Faith is not part of Islam. Like Christianity came from Judaism, Baha'i came from Islam, in that the Prophet was Persian and Shia. The faith is very structured, formal and has many rules -- including no alcohol, daily structured prayer, annual fasting, etc. Many Bana'i believers have been persecuted, killed and driven from their countries based on their beliefs.
@julianneheindorf5757
@julianneheindorf5757 3 жыл бұрын
There are a few Baha’i laws that Baha’is are asked to follow, such as not consuming alcohol and drugs for recreational purposes, but the Baha’i Faith does not “have many rules”. Most of what you refer to as “rules” I’ll call guidelines and following those are an individual choice. These guidelines have been given both as protection and as a way to grow spiritually, but no one is going to check if another Baha’i is f.ex. praying or fasting. There are other things about the Baha’i Faith that are far more important than a few laws, such as striving to have a good character, being kind and loving etc. The Baha’i Faith is a religion that acknowledges and highly encourages full equality between men and women, the eradication of extreme poverty and wealth, unity among the nations, eradication of all prejudices. The human race is one, protection of the environment, a universal language etc. It offers a real blue print for a world civilization in which mankind can live in peace in harmony and it doesn’t require everyone to be a Baha’i either nor does it mean that we should all be the same. Preserving one’s culture and native language is as important as working towards one world.

The muslim population in the U.S. is so undercounted and they still use the same outdated numbers which is beyond me why. Here in NY. . . muslims make up at least 5 % of 20 Million or so population. You have people here from Pakistan, Afghanistan, Egypt, Yemen, among others which are muslim- majority nations. So, the amount of muslims in usa is 3 to 4 times the official census estimate, if not beyond that.

One of the really interesting things about Baha'i is that they believe that God has sent multiple messengers to Earth including Jesus, Muhammad, Krishna, the Buddha, and many others. They are sent to reform the religion to God's true meaning because of the nature of people corrupting religion as time goes on. Their founder, Baha'u'llah, is the most recent of these messengers, and another will come to take his place one day

There are rules in the Baha’i faith. Don’t drink alcohol, don’t smoke, don’t use drugs, don’t backbite. the Oneness of mankind. Universal peace upheld by a world government. Independent investigation of the truth. Common foundation of all religions. The essential harmony of science and religion. Equality of men and women. Elimination of prejudice of all kinds. Universal compulsory education. Spiritual solution to the economic problems and matters. A universal auxiliary language.

Found this on the Internet somewhere. It's interesting: When tolerant and democratic non-Muslim societies give in to the Muslim religious privileges, many of their toxic anti-non-Muslim components creep in exponentially as their population grows as explained below: -Muslims up to 5% of the population (Australia,Canada, Denmark, Germany, Italy, Norway, Spain, Sweden, UK, USA) stay as segregated minority, start Mosque construction, use oil money to influence liberal Journalists for public relations and open Islamic Study Chairs in major universities, proselytize from vulnerable groups, clog streets with open-air congregationary rug prayers, develop sleeper cells for Jehad; -Muslims 5 to 10% (France, Kenya,Netherlands, Sweden, Switzerland) push for those Islamic believes that are in conflict with the values & tradition of diverse societies, ask breaks on jobs for 5-times prayers, establish madrasa education, display of veil by their females, demand to rule themselves by Sharia; -Muslims 10 to 25% (Burma, Cyprus, INDIA,Israel, Philippines, Russia, Serbia, Thailand) tend to increase lawlessness and chaos such as mob violence after Friday prayers for alleged blasphemy or Koran burning destroying national monuments India and car-burnings France. Many actions of native non-Muslims population in full compliance with their own culture, constitution and traditions of freedom of speech will offend Islam resulting in uprisings such as opposition to Mohammad cartoons, post false blogs using non-Muslim on-line names, force partition of countries, create mayhem by terror and ethnic cleansing, keep their daughters confined while seducing young non-Muslim girls to marry forcing conversion, shelter illegal Muslims migrants from all over the world and breed more to increase Muslim population ratio; -Muslims 25% to 90% - Once the population of Muslims reaches 25%, forced conversions, hair-trigging riots and ethnic cleansing will start to ensure that the figure reaches 95%. As long as the figure is fewer than 25% the only ways to increase Muslim population are illegal immigration, conversion of poor and illiterates, and high birth rates like rabbits; with the exception of few countries such as NIGERIA (always in turmoil despite huge oil income), there are very few countries in the world where the population of Muslims is between 25% and 90%. Indonesia and Malaysia are examples of countries that have seen rapid Islamisation and discrimination of minorities in recent decades. -Muslims from 90 to 99% (Albania, Azerbaijan, Algeria, Bahrain, Bangladesh, Bosnia, Chad, Chechnya, Egypt, Gaza, Eritrea, Ethiopia, Indonesia, Iran, Iraq, Jordan, Kosovo, Kyrgyzstan, Lebanon, Pakistan, Nigeria, Qatar, Sudan, Syria, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, Turkey, Uzbekistan, West Bank) notice violent jihad, face hair-trigger riots, jihad lashkars, unfettered persecution of non-Muslims, use Zakat funds to spread Islam and terror, target killings, sporadic ethnic cleansing, death for conversion (apostasy and proselytizing), Rule by Sharia, start conspiracy theory, subdue and impose Jizya tax on non-Muslims only, military coups, dictatorships, disappearances of dissidents, enforcement of dreaded Blasphemy Law, some genocide, drive infidels out with frenzy to make 100% Muslim state; -100% Muslim population (Afghanistan, GAZA, Libya, Maldives, Saudi Arabia, Somalia, Yemen) should usher Darul-Islam, the Islamic world of Peace; here everybody is a Muslim, Madarasa their schools, Mullah their intellectuals and Koran is the only word. Unfortunately, peace in Islam is a mirage as it can NEVER be achieved, even in 100% Muslim states. By then the entire society becomes radicalized and more-radicalized Crazy Muslims intimidate, spread hatred thru network media by morphed pictures, spew venom and satisfy their blood-lust by killing less-radicalized Muslims such as Sunnis killing Shias. Worst, the Islamic state becomes either a brutal Islamic Sheikhdom as Saudi Arab with free oil money or a terrorist state like Pakistan using terrorism as state policy with nuclear bomb in the control of genocidal army or Somalia, the nation of pirates, all claiming to follow the guidance emanating from the same source, KORAN.

Sumit Pal Interesting, yet nonsensical. You assume a linear relationship between Muslim population and complex sociological phenomena. Utter tripe. Had no idea Turkey had "violent jihad, hair-trigger riots, jihad lashkars, unfettered persecution of non-Muslims, Zakat funds to spread Islam and terror, targeted killings, ethnic cleansing, death for conversion (apostasy and proselytizing), Rule by Sharia".

You do not need to take 100% in literal sense. How much would be the non-Muslim population? maybe less than 1%. Also most forms of public religious expression inconsistent with the government-sanctioned interpretation of Sunni Islam are restricted; non-Muslims are not allowed to have Saudi citizenship and non-Muslim places of worship are not permitted.

Sadly, most polls only list the five+ main religions, and then have "No Religion/Other" as the last option... When in fact Paganism is making a comeback. Paganism (specifically Wicca) is a fast-growing religion that started in the 1950's, and worships a God and a Goddess. Also, Spiritual people are kind of forced to choose No Religion because even though they believe in spirits and metaphysics, they don't believe in a deity. Some believe in a single Source.

The big mysteries in life are just that: mysteries. People everywhere are looking for answers, and religion claims to have them all while denouncing anything that contradicts their claim. Unfortunately doing so lessens the human experience by denying people the opportunity to wonder about the big questions: Where we come from? Why are we here? Where are we going? If you take those away from the masses and leave us with "god", then there is no one really taking the initiative to figure the important stuff out, and we are all left as mindless sheep believing whatever trash the church feels like throwing our way.

Just because something is widespread globally, doesnt mean it is right. I learned throughout my life that love is love, and to describe ones love as a sin and a abomination is wrong. If it does not harm a person or people then there is no problem. If there is a god, and all are created by such god, what deem it by anybody of any society, to say that creation has no place in this world or the next or that it is confused and broken. Even studies in nature show that somehow homosexuality occurrs. You see my reasoning here?

I wish to learn more though, and maybe you can ask a well versed bahai aboutthe Imam thing. (I read that he represented the third imam not the twelfth, even though that's the one the Muslims are banking on.) So I don't know what to tell you friend, you see a scamer prophet, I see a religion with potential in this new era.

The Gods of today are the comedy of the future. Remember those silly Greeks/Romans who actually believed in those ridiculous Gods? Hilarious. What makes you think they'll stay? Ideas, like men, die. They are not killed, they fade. Let me rephrase that; they don't die, they are simply discarded.

Apollo So now you don't even believe in death. I see. lmfao. Listen man this world had a begining and it will end. Tell me, how do u think the universe even started? What do you think is keeping a person a live? The organs? nope, its the spirit. when someone dies, it means their spirit left their body. That is logical in 100s of ways.
@stephen200005945
@stephen200005945 8 жыл бұрын
You have either misread or are just really confused. I never said I didn't believe in death, nor was it ever implied. I said that _ideas_ don't die. The man to idea comparison was meant to show the fragile being of ideas; how easily one can be crushed and humiliated. Of course it will still exist in the infinitesimal terms, but only similar to a weak, starving dog left abandoned. I believe the universe and time as we know it began with the big bang. Shoot yourself, rip out your intestines, let your "spirit" show it's power. The spirit is something the mind creates to not feel so ephemeral and insignificant, prove me wrong with these "100s of ways".

I'm a Baha'i! really surprised we were on the board anywhere! "The divine prophets have revealed and founded religion. They have laid down certain laws and heavenly principles for the guidance of mankind. They have taught and promulgated the knowledge of God, established praiseworthy ethical ideals and inculcated the highest standards of virtues in the human world. Gradually these heavenly teachings and foundations of reality have been beclouded by human interpretations and dogmatic imitations of ancestral beliefs. The essential realities which the prophets labored so hard to establish in human hearts and minds while undergoing ordeals and suffering tortures of persecution, have now well nigh vanished. Some of these heavenly messengers have been killed, some imprisoned; all of them despised and rejected while proclaiming the reality of divinity. Soon after their departure from this world, the essential truth of their teachings was lost sight of and dogmatic imitations adhered to." -Abdu'l-Baha

Diversity of religions only work when the core of the religions stands for the same thing. Brazil has no Muslims, we have so few Mosques you can count them with your hands. Yet, we are a multicultural country. The majority by far is Catholic, the second religion is Kardecism Spiritism (seen as a spiritual version of Catholicism mixed with quantum physics), Buddhists, Protestant Evangelical, Judaism and African Umbanda. We have schools that are half Catholic half Jewish, we have Kardecist Temples side by side with Synagogues and Churches. Works well because the core of the religions don't preach rape, don't say women worth 1/4 of a men, chold marriage and etc. When you bring Hinduism or Islam to a country with Western Values you bring in a completely different logic of thinking, a different logic or existing. Islam never worked anywhere, wherever arrives brings in conflicts, wars, destruction. Has being like that since the creation of Islam. Show me one, a single one decent Muslim country.... there's none.

Looks like Arizona's second most populous religion is Hinduism. We always have to be different here. Although, this a rare moment in Arizona history... We for once, are not the "crazy" dissenting state, falling under national criticism somehow... probably because this has little to do with any of our governers. And they didn't even talk about AZ. Too funny.

Atheism in Buddhism, Jainism While Buddhism is a tradition focused on spiritual liberation, it is not a theistic religion. The Buddha himself rejected the idea of a creator god, and Buddhist philosophers have even argued that belief in an eternal god is nothing but a distraction for humans

I'm a former Baha'i and now an Atheist. For the most part, I agree with the teachings of the Faith. There were a few key issues and rules I disagreed with that led to me becoming not religious and then that led to me realizing that I didn't believe in God. I still have a great respect for the Faith and many in it, I just don't recognize as a member anymore.

There are a lot of different pagan religions, the worship of Zeus is pagan as an example, Wiccan is pretty modern, and I think most people would consider it a cult, so it doesn't have the kind of appeal as mainstream religions, thus why not popular enough to be considered.

Here in Arkansas I routinely see christian employers and businesses get away with open discrimination and persecution of non-christians. No real sympathy for those folke in our household. Religion is the crippler of our growth as a species. Support love and empathy, science, not superstition.

I was surprised about Florida. I haven't been there in a really long time, but I always pictured it being full of old retired Jews who moved there from New York. It's not surprising, though, that Baha'i is big in South Carolina, considering that the deep south is the birthplace of jazz, and there are a lot of Baha'is in the jazz community.

Shawn Ravenfire 1. Jazz started in Harlem in the 20's and 30's 2. The Baha'i Faith is big now in SC because there were many mass door-to-door teachings in the mid 20th century during segregation.

+Rita B. The Jewish population of Florida is mostly concentrated in the Miami to Palm Beach area, with smaller clumps in a few other cities. So on a statewide basis, they are not as prevalent as you think. American-born black people, on the other hand, include significant minorities of Black Muslims starting in the sixties, and some parts of Florida have surprisingly large immigrant communities from Arab and Muslim countries (not all Muslim; an earlier wave of Arab immigrants, the families of TV stars Danny Thomas and Jamie Farr for example, were and are Eastern Christians); Jacksonville has had a significant Christian Arab community since the 1930s and 40s, recently joined by more Muslims from their homelands; the Hazouri family includes a former mayor, former city councilman, and former and current school board member, plus real estate and other businesses, and one of the best known law firms is Farah and Farah.

***** The Baha'i is not really based on Islam, but considering it is from the Middle East, of course it has its influences. It grew in SC during segregation with the black population. White Christians were the ones discriminating towards them and a religion, such as the Baha'i Faith, which believed we were all equal was popular. I am a Baha'i.

It's all complicated. Religions don't exactly branch off each other smoothly and neatly. Broadly speaking, one could say that all modern religions are offshoots of tribal animism, indirectly.

@Ramirez LOL this is hilarious. Golden age? With Islam? My friend, take a look at Islamic countries, they are all shit holes. The ones that are half decent like Iran or Lebanon were never Islamic until recent years (Iran in 79 and Lebanon was invaded by Muslims in the holy war aka the late 80). Iran was a promising country and Lebanon was a Democracy and rich, after Islam arrived nothing worth reading came out of those countries, like zero, nada. Unless you mean the Golden age of hell and satan, your comment is delusional
