Hmm I'd say it's more like a noteworthy 20 rather than a best 20, but I agree with most of it. There was actually quite a lot of discussion and updates for Mario Bros during its development. I'd say the Amstrad has a stronger range of homebrew games overall, certainly more varied (Pinball Dreams, Orion Prime, CPC Soccer, Imperial Mahjong etc - not to mention some great scrolling stuff), though Sam's Journey is especially amazing, the Mario port is a great effort and It's Magic 3 has a great cutesy look (probably because there's no red).

Briley Witch and Planet X2.1 deserve to be in this top. Both games are triumphs of programming and show that anything is possible on a stock C64. They also are a first, never been done before, the first a JRPG, the second a real-time strategy game in the vein of Dune 2 and Starcraft. On the other hand, I wouldn't include Mario and Sonic, but that's just me. We already had Giana, and Master System Sonic is mediocre. Sam's Journey renders them both obsolete.

I honestly can't wrap my mind around the fact that Caren and the Tangled Tentacles is not on this list. Some other omissions like L'Abbaye des Morts, Millie and Mollie or Polar Bear in Space I can understand, because of the overabundance of action platformers on this list - and, incidentally, on the libraries, both old and new, of every 8 bit computer of the era - but something as unique as a game styled after the two Lucasfilm graphic adventures for the C64 that somehow managed to look several orders of magnitude better than them and nearly as good as something running on an Amiga? That's an incredibly glaring oversight, in my opinion...

Antonio Savona has more than 10 games alone better than Soulless and Outrage... ignoring any of his games is a big miss imo.
@oscarjimenezgarrido75912 жыл бұрын
@@hayesmaker64 Soulless is a great spiritual sequel to one of the very, if not the actual, first metroidvanias in history and a personal fave of mine, The Secret Armour of Antiriad, so I'd kind of spare that one to be honest; but other than that, yeah, there are many games on this video that in no shape or form belong in an all-encompassing "best of" list of this kind when compared with any of Savona's works. The man is nothing short of an artistically gifted genius of game design and his C64 programming abilities are stounding, and I don't tend to give away that kind of praise easily. Not to diminish or undermine, of course, the quality of some of the games on this video and the hard work of the good folks who made them, as there are some genuine great gaming _and_ programming highlights in here, but, objectively speaking and trying to adhere strictly to the theme and title of this compilation, there's also a quite fair amount of filler here that has no business taking spots that should rightfully being occupied by the aforementioned Caren or the incredibly ingenious - and, surprisingly, mind-warpingly playable, specially given the PETSCII gimmick - Monstro Giganto. Savona is one of the greatest talents that's ever graced the C64 scene and yet his many merits, both on the technical and artistic side, are rarely acknowledged accordingly, as this very video proves by ommission.

@bitset37412 жыл бұрын
Definitely not "lazy" in most cases, just the amount of time allowed, and that is kinda across the board. Say for instance I wanted to work full time developing a game by myself. I could take out a loan, or save up money to do it. That money I had would be my budget. If the game takes longer to develop then expected, I am in trouble. The only money that would be coming in would be for sales for the game, so until it is done, that would be nothing. Same exact thing for even your largest game developers. They set aside a certain amount of money, or take loans, and are in the same exact boat - no money coming in until it is finished. If I am developing a game on the side as a hobby, with no intended release date, that is all out the window. If I want to spend 6 months getting the scrolling just right in a certain section, or squeeze a few more bytes out of the loader, I can.
