I had one just like this one, too. It is my favorite car out of all the ones I had, even over my 1984 Buick Grand National or my 2006 Chevy Impala SS with Flowmaster mufflers. It never gave me problems, was well kept and maintained and like new condition with nice smoke tint windows when I traded it in for the Impala SS. It was pretty fast as is. I wish I had it now new, or in the condition it was on when I traded it. I would keep it stock, except put Flowmaster mufflers and upgrade the stereo amp and speakers. And maybe get the grille and body kit parts from the SS. I would be totally happy.

Almost any car with the 3800 SII or SIII can be heavily modified to make that power. The problem with all the 3800 SII car accept the Camaro and Firebird (that had the option of a T-5 manual and the 4L60E)was the transmission, the 4T65E was very weak, especially hooked to the LS4, it is possible to swap the 4T80E from Northstar fwd vehicles but, it's a huge hassle. I think it's possible to use a manual transaxle like the F40 6 speed from G6s but it's a lot of work too. From this period I always rember people buying the Taurus and Sable with the DOHC 3L V6 for dirt cheap, they were the Altima of the mid-late 2000s. The Impalas were always more expensive in good shape or they had major problems already and I tend to think stock for stock the 3L DOHC Fords were a little quicker than 3800 SII W-body cars. Once you start mods, of course anything can happen and you can change the fabric of the entire car if you want too. You'd be better off finding a Caprice PPV, G8, GTO, F body or 5th Gen Camaro than an Impala from this period, even the 300-320hp 3.6 V6 cars with rwd are a better choice, you can find decent running G8, GTO and PPV V8s for $5-7k.

Great insight! I’ve only more recently been hearing about the 4T80E swap. And I know a few people have messed around with the Fiero transmission to some extent. But at this point I don’t remember a lot of the old specs and forums posts that I once knew. Great suggestion, for someone without sentimental attachment your list of RWD V8 GMs or even like the ATS for more of a tuner car would be sweet. Personally, I’d love a supercharged Chevy SS as the budget/sleeper CTS-V or the new CT5-blackwing! I drove the 3.0TT version and holy cow is that a well balanced GM sedan. 🤩

The vast most of them are in junkyards as they just weren't built to last. Just one example where GM used plastic high pressure fuel injection parts, which eventually would degrade and leak. This would cost thousands to repair most of the time they were junked as they weren't worth this costly repair. Which is why you rarely see them anymore while my daily driver is a 2001 Accord with 345,000 miles. The thing won't die. The first expensive repair and it will be retired, but again, the thing just won't die. I suspect if it was a chevy I probably would have junked it multiple times for many reasons.

@@AutomotiveAnonymous208 I got a speeding ticket in North Bend, WA in 17. I honestly thought the speed limit was 70mph because I was on I-90, Eastbound, but the speed limit was only 60. Anyway the cop was in an Impala SS. The cop seemed cool so I told him that I’d race him in his worn out Chevy. He then told me that it had the corvette engine. I just laughed and told him that I’d still like to race because I was in our 2010 Tundra 4X4 with the 5.7 V8 and TRD dual exhaust. If he would have agreed, you betcha that I would’ve raced him.

You’re right, especially as the general rule of thumb for most vehicles not meant for boost. It’s definitely a rabbit hole. I think I remember reading way back when that the stock block bottom end could usually hold up to around 500hp. And if someone’s going crazy and much further than that they likely would build the engine with stronger or forged internals.

I had two of these. One was a 2003 LS with the 3.8 V-6. The other was a 2005 base model with the 3.4 V-6. Both ran with green coolant, and the Dexcool was removed. Both also were regularly serviced, and both developed intake and head gasket leaks. The power steering racks also leaked and had to be replaced every 3 years. Both also had transmission problems at 70,000 miles, and needed transmission replacements.

I've been a cab driver for 17 years, and drove lots and lots of Impalas from this generation. They were all pretty crappy, lots of transmission and heating/cooling issues. The Luminas that preceded them were much more reliable, and to be honest GM hasn't made a good car for the taxi/livery industry since. Those Impalas and Malibus from that era were the impetus for the taxi industry to switch to Toyota and Honda and never look back. When this switch happened ,maintenance costs across the fleet were reduced by 50%

I put a zzp racing pcm in my old GTP, a K&N cold air intake I ran into the hole in the side of the fender/bumper where the hole is and sealed it with Plexiglas so it didn't draw hot air from anything else, bigger injectors, and a smaller 2.8 pulley. But everything else pretty much stock. Honestly even stock I'm very happy with the 3800s and it's my most favorite engine of all time! Did this guy just call that Impala a.....sleeper??? You just took you cred into the red with that blasphemous statement, you was lucky to get these to even start after 3-4 years and really lucky to get the 3.4 water pump to last longer than 3 months without going right back out again because of the terrible engineering of the coolant system. Even if by some off chance or loose definition it could be called a sleeper, as soon as you hit it the key would swing back and turn it off. I guess maybe if by sleeper you mean having to sleep in it because it stranded you somewhere remote then I guess it tracks. In 2015 when the newest model was just 10 years old you would've been hard pressed to find one on the road. Don't say I'm Chevy bashing either cause that's all I have ever bought and I'm a Diehard Chevy guy. You ever hear of the term "Friday car" referring to a lemon inferring it was built on a Friday? That's the only day they built these.

@@AutomotiveAnonymous208 yeah lol, I dont pull punches when it comes to cars and engineering, I dont care what badge it has on it. I mean I guess the engine is solid, but that was negated by the coolant system. If I changed one of those waterpumps, I changed 30 atleast. But if you kept the oil changed and the coolant system operational they lasted but that was rarely achieved. The grand am was fun to drive in the same way a go-kart is, felt light and had a little acceleration. Sounds like this video was more nostalgia than it was about being a sleeper.

I appreciate that! And yeah more nostalgic for sure, especially when we got to how bad that 0-60 actually turned out to be. 😬 One of the most fun passenger cars I’ve ever driven was the 2,000# Mitsubishi Mirage video I posted about a year ago. It also felt like a go kart. But about 2 weeks after I filmed that it was announced that it’s also the car associated with the highest fatalities in accidents haha 🤪 🤕.
