7.8 out of 10, too much water. If you get the reference, yes, the Hoenn region in Pokémon. All three games, Ruby, Sapphire, and Emerald, had a lot of water. They are my favourite from this era.

Kingdom Hearts, Final Fantasy X, Pokemon RSE and FRLG (the Sevii Islands added a lot of water to the game, keeping with the trend). Hell, even Persona 3 (while not having any water levels) took place on Tatsumi Port Island (a place near the ocean) and felt it absolutely necessary to include a beach trip. Reload is even retroactively adding more of a water motif to the game based on its UI and trailers.

I remember watching one of those dvds, probably pirated, that played children's music that seemed to be made by just a group of teachers. From what I remember, it was simply psychedelic what was going on and it was difficult to describe what I saw but it was some images of chickens (the thing I remember the most was an orange one), cows, flowers, children and other things drawn similar to a kitchen tablecloth, something very simple, the strangest thing was that the screen distorted every second of what was going on, in a way that barely mattered what resisted I had seen it in my parents' car and now I lost hope of finding it because the dvd that could have had it was thrown away and as that was extremely obscure I don't expect anyone to remember this media This message was written to be that something at least remembered this thing. I hope you answer me clearly

Before I watch the video i think the main reason was the ability to actually animate and render water. The semi-dynamic rendering we got for it and the way it interacts with light. Final fantasy 10, sonic adventure... The ability to use transparency layers dynamocaly was such a revolution to allow new and unique artstyles.

Good to see you again! I never really thought about it but it's understandable that they went all-out with water now that they had the graphics to do it. But dang, I forgot how many pre-rendered cutscenes FFX had. Square always had to show off its budget. I remember the scene in The Incredibles where the family's plane is shot down and the end up in the ocean with wet hair, and my parents told me that must've been very, very hard to animate. Hair and water individually were nightmares for CG, and this was both at once.

@@ThoughtBubbleYT It's something I kinda miss nowadays, now that in-engine graphics have got so good you don't see pre-rendered cutscenes much anymore. You always knew a story moment was special when it got a pre-rendered scene.

@@BigKlingy YES. Like there's a bit of difference in games like Final Fantasy XVI between in-game and pre-rendered but the gap has definitely narrowed to the extent that it doesn't feel like we're being given a gift like it used to.

...I know it was just mentioned as footnote as if it were a "pre-wetgen" game if you will, but I think you can actually pinpoint Wave Race 64 as the start of this shift (but not the catalyst, don't get it confused, there is a difference). Mark my words, water will make a big comeback when consoles become capable of widespread 3D fluid mechanics (instead of having to settle for highly localized and contextual scripts that are literally surface level). ...I miss those times. IMHO, the "wettest generation" was the peak of gaming. This was the furthest the industry had pushed the medium before the irrelevancy of physical copies inexplicably made corporations more interested in perpetually finding more and more anti-consumer practices. I also just really liked the Y2K and frutiger aero aesthetics. Although, admittedly, I could be biased because of my own personal circumstances. After living in a veritable ghost town for practically my entire life up to that point, I went through the difficult transition of moving at the age of fifteen to a new place three hours away. I wouldn't know it at the time, but it turned out to be for the best. I had essentially left my bullying problems behind (never mind that it effectively just got swapped out with cyberbullying), the residence we had taken up neighbored one of the hottest vacation spots in the continental U.S. (so naturally we never bothered with going on any trips other than to see family), and even the house we eventually built was the best one I've ever stayed in (too bad we only stayed there my senior year before we moved closer to the old stomping grounds so my parents could more easily help my aging grandparents).

To be completely honest, not quite sure why I didn’t give it at least a passing mention. I know I wanted to focus more on titles where water wasn’t a core pillar of their world designs in prior entries in their respective franchises but in retrospect it definitely did deserve something! Lol
