Plenty of modern cars have a fuel pump drive module. Many different Ford models do - in fact, many other Fords use this same exact module. But the mounting location of the module on the F-150 makes this a pretty common failure. I also cover a couple other common problems leading to a lack of fuel pressure and a no start in these trucks.

My friend's 2008 F150 truck started by having no power and rapidly progressed to starting and sputtering to a stop to not starting at all. We found ourselves stuck at the side of the road in a construction zone in the blistering heat while towing a boat. We were 12 km from the nearest town with a 4 hour wait pending for a tow truck and facing having to leave the boat and truck unattended in an out of town parking lot and then arranging to get picked up - at least another couple of hours. Instead we clicked on this video. Within about an hour, totally thanks to this video, my friends F150 went from a won't start condition to purring like a kitten and got us home within another hour. Luckily my friend carries a tool kit (as does mine) that included a bit of hook up wire. I know it takes a lot of work to put together these videos so thank you!

I love you ❤… saved me BIG time over here in the UK. - was told to order a fuel pump and somehow found your video while searching to order one. 2 bits of copper wire in the plug and she’s purring like a kitten again. Thank you.

Great video! I was stranded at the gas station right after fueling up my truck. I skipped all the diagnosis parts and went right to bypassing the FPDM with the two wires.. just had to push the spare tire over an inch. My truck started right up! My module looked about the same condition as his! Thanks for the help

I ordered one I'll get it in a few days. My truck wouldn't start at night time think it may have been getting moisture in it. I'll keep you posted. I came outside today when it's nice out and it started

My wife thinks you sound like Krieger from Archer. Great video, I swear Ford has forgotten how to design stuff, it’s like they fired all the talent because they were paid too much and just hired fresh, out of school engineers to fill the empty chairs.

His name… is FISTER ROBOTO. He’s a fully integrated, multi fetish, sexual machine. And the best part… is that he’s learning. Yeah I think you’re on to something there. Just… so much dumb stuff to be found in fords. Why are the fuses not labeled? No reason. Why do the plugs blow out of early 5.4 heads? No reason. Why do they seize in 3V heads? No reason. Why is the fix for every inevitable Triton problem engine replacement? No reason. Why are 6.0s? Yeah… ok that’s not really Ford’s fault, but they were definitely at the table on that one. It’s just all bad.

I just got a 2007 f150 harley davidson and for some reason my fuel pump fuse keep on burning and my truck dies. Ima try this hopefully that’s the problem. Thanks you for the video

Friend dropped a lot on a new motorhome. Long Ford dually chassis, Triton V10, tons of gizmo's. The pump driver failed soon after purchase- figured 'bathtub curve' for electronics failure. While out in some gawk-n-photo-op-spot in Montana, fuel system failed again. They were informed to 'swirl' the fuel by pushing on the sides of the motorhome to 'bump' the pump motor onto a good winding. Strangely it worked, but fried on the bee-line to the approved garage. Dealetship engaged in some serious long-distance butt-kissage to keep the customer somewhat happy. So Chicken or Egg- bad fuel pump roached the pump driver or bad pump driver fried the fuel pump?

Well, that’s a tough one. Brand new pumps in brand new rigs shouldn’t die… ford pumps themselves are quite stout in my experience. Not a repair I’ve had to do often - and the one I -did- do, well, that’s why I thought making this video was a good idea. Just because someone says they need a fuel pump… doesn’t mean they do. Have to wonder if something weird relating to pump electrical happened when they were upfitting that motorhome. Or it’s ghosts. Lol.

@@DeadDodgeGarage He was calling me and I am, ummm, they advised to 'swirl' the tank to bump the pump onto another winding...? I avoid that rig like a bloated dead whale on the beach with an insufficient tnt charge-

I let my husband convince me to get a 2004 Ford F150.... NEVER AGAIN. I can't stand this heap of junk. Currently dealing with these issues. So many sensors replaced.

Yeah… I’ve had a lot of bad times with those trucks. As nice as they can be to drive, I don’t think it’s worth it at all.

I have a 2005 f15 with the 5.4, and I have replaced the battery and also put on a new fuel rail pressure sensor and a new fuel pump drive module. With all the new parts, it still won't start. It will turn over but will not start. I don't know what else to check on it.

There are more possibilities than I could possibly list here. But another one I’ve seen before is a bad fuel pump relay - which is built into the fuse/relay box in the passenger kick panel and is not replaceable. To fix that, I wired in an external relay. Have you checked your rollover switch to make sure it is pressed down? There’s always the fuel pump itself. And then there are many possibilities outside of the fuel system as well.

I've saw some really weird things from Ford lately, my mother has a 2012 ford explorer, my dad went to start it and it backfired and blew the plastic intake manifold into a million pieces, even dented the hood up from underneath! My dad had a ford truck with the Triton engine, that's another sad story!

​@DeadDodgeGarage my 2004 5.4L F150 4x4 is fine, I love it, other than my most recent fuel pump not shutting off when I turn off the engine... ... Jac Nasser forced the engineers to remove 350 lb out of the 2005 to get a better CAFE, and it was a disaster. Jac almost destroyed Ford.

My boyfriend’s did the same thing he put a new module on it and the plug didn’t fit good either but he got it on there snug enough. It ran good for about 10 minutes then started sputtering again. He ended up straight wiring it to get us home. Even with the new module it still has the same problem. Has anyone had problems with the wiring plug that connects to the module?

I’ve had that problem multiple times. They just don’t fit well for some reason. But it’s usually possible to get it clicked in place with some swearing.

2005 v10 l. I bridged the connectors but only getting 4-5 to pigtail. Isnthat normal or should it be 12-14v. Wireing in a external inline pump

You should have a full 12v (nominal, obviously that could vary some) on pin 5, the power feed from the inertia switch. I don’t know what voltage you might find on the control circuit or monitor circuit. But pin 5 (the positive feed that you are jumping to the pump feed) should have 12v.

Dont think it'll be strong enough?? Funny you say that because i have the ex pump hardwire now, but the pump keeps surging like its not keeping up with the truck. Also i figured out why i wasnt getting power. One of the wires corroded off

My 2004 f150 v8 4x4's fuel pump keeps running after I turn the truck engine off, running my battery down.

In those trucks, the fuel pump relay is built into the circuit board inside the fuse panel / power distribution center in the passenger kick panel. It sounds like yours has stuck on. In the past, I have cut the wires coming from the pump relay and wired them to an external relay. Instructions on how to do this can be found online. It’s been a while so I don’t remember which color wires they are.

Well, the pump will be running at full duty cycle. It may richen the mixture excessively and wear out the fuel pump prematurely. I would try to limit driving it that way as much as possible.

@@same2066 there is no external fuel filter. Do you hear the pump running when you have it bridged and you turn the key on? It is entirely possible that you have a totally different problem. The relay in the fuse panel and the rollover switch can both cause the fuel pump to stop working, but there are many other things that can make your truck fail to start. It would be impossible for me to list all of them.

How long does it run? I experienced this myself and was perplexed - but it would only idle for around 10 seconds. It wouldn’t continue to run, or drive.

Ive checked grounds pcm voltage supply relays and fuses nothing is getting hot or testing bad i might be overthinking its issue not sure at this point

I have a 06 5.4 f150 that will not start without ether. After it starts with ether it runs great. After it warms up it will start up just like the good old days. When it is cold it just likes to crank over and over. I changed the FPDM. After I changed the FPDM my fuel pressure went to 75.75 psi avg. With the old FPDM, the fuel pressure was 39 psi avg. Can anyone help with this ether-loving beauty?

Huh. I don’t think it should be 75 psi… could this be a crank or cam sensor reading issue? No fuel until it spins up quickly on ether?

@DeadDodgeGarage with my old FPDM the girl pressure was 39.5 psi average. The higher furl pressure is in both KOEO AND KOEO states

I don’t know the spec offhand but it sounds like your new module is just cranking the pump. Also it doesn’t sound like the module was related to your problem…

Many ford models have the same control module - but the cars have it mounted inside. I’m not sure where it is mounted on the E series vans. I have never had to replace one there.
