Telling “The. weak should just go down now” was also quite possibly the absolute worst thing to say to a mountaineer too - if you actually believe they do need to go down that is. Mountaineers are uniquely egotistical creatures. They have to be to even attempt that climb. But it really does make a bunch of them total dicks at times. But that sports psychology for you. Someone that can be a bit of a dick at times, turns into a complete tosser when so physically & psychologically stressed. But those same stresses can make others into heroes that would be worthy of following too:. “What if we fall?” “Then we fall together.”

48:55 She's really grasping at straws to justify her callousness. People drive cars out of necessity. She's climbing a mountain as a recreational pastime without concern for fellow climbers, it's a ridiculous comparison
@Ksweetpea

I think she meant you keep driving as in, despite knowing wrecks happen and even seeing one, you in general continue driving in general, not "you witness a wreck and don't stop to check on them" Folks keep trying to summit the 8,000m peaks even though there's at least one fatality every year. People keep driving cars even though some 30,000+ people die in car crashes every year just in my country I do agree that it's a scummy way to justify her callousness

I mean, I think at some point you gotta weigh withdrawal symptoms with smoking symptoms. Like, withdrawal can make your concentration go to pieces and cause worsened mood + headaches + insomnia. (Googled the cdc website >:3) I doubt the people smoking on the mountain weren’t somewhat addicted prior. I feel like you’d probably try to keep your pack as light as possible + you’d have to consciously choose to pack cigarettes instead of other stuff / make your pack heavier/bulkier

Perhaps the adventurers who feel the need to climb the highest peaks can sign documents agreeing that no resources, human or otherwise, should be expended to retrieve their bodies should they die during the attempt. So many Sherpas have died trying to recover frozen corpses, not to mention the funds used in the same pointless endeavor. Seems a sad waste for someone's tragic "adventure."

Thank you for the video. Of the 1996-disaster at Mount Everest I remember that climbers should have turned at 2 pm what many did not do... I am wondering what you might have done with your dogs right before filming. They are always so calm and sleepy. ❤😴

it is really nice to have a narrator who gives the people involved so much time for characterization.

Appreciate that. It's my favourite part of these stories - I'm always curious about what makes people tick, their experiences, etc.

As a climber who's watched the documentaries and read a couple of the books, these are my key findings: 1) The main reason for so many fatalities was the warm weather. The mountain literally started coming apart. This in combination with the clouded judgment that comes with being at that altitude (especially without bottled oxygen) for too long. It is a risk to rely on it as a crutch, but it's a double edged sword. 2) Wilco is tough bodied and minded, but he's not a very skilled mountaineer. He also wasn't great at generally being a fellow human back in 2008. Hopefully, this experience taught him some compassion. 3) Alberto Zerain and Pemba were the strongest climbers on the mountain that season. You should not be on K2 unless you're an elite mountaineer and those two were probably the only ones truly qualified to be there. You could make the argument for a couple others based on experience, but if you don't have natural ability (VO2 Max) in the rarefied air of someone like Ed Viesturs, the risk is too high.

So, this story has some problems I think, and that is relying on information from Marco, who is thought to have lied about what really happened on the mountain. So, this story can't be trusted, unfortunately.

An incredibly through unbiased example of reporting. Most sports are now being taken over by trust fund brats, at least that mentality, so why not mountaineering. God help us!

I love mountains, I love snow, and I love climbing…and I especially love breathing and getting home in one piece. No death zone climbing for haven’t ever learnt how to use an ice axe, so I don’t do ice climbing. I suppose I am really just an enthusiastic winter hiker.)

this video was as intense as any action or drama movie ive ever seen, maybe even more so. genuinely kept me on the edge of my seat. i can only hope other climbers learn from the mistakes made here.. some of the decisions are just impossible for me to understand, whats the point in summiting if your chance of survival on the descent is critically low? bless chhiring and pemba absolute legends
