LegitStreetCars LegitStreetCars I’ve been going through some intense nightmares with my 2013 Ford Explorer XLT, in addition to the exhaust issue. We bought the car a year old, with only 20k miles, and still under factory power train. The first issue was with the AC system. My wife was picking up our kids from school, and while waiting in line, a teacher runs over to the car and tells her it’s on fire! My wife shut off the car, determined it was just smoke, but the engine was seemingly locked up! I towed the car back to the dealer, we found the AC pump actually seized and would not disengage. Of course this wasn’t covered under power train, so I had the car towed to an ASE certified mechanic to perform the repair. Turns out, the pump had already been replaced! Since then, we have had a pump failure every year to two years! The most recent was last year, and we literally replaced every component associated with the AC system... the entire car was disassembled! We’ve contacted ford numerous times for this, always receiving a letter of non-liability as the issue has been assessed and deemed a non-safety issue! Shortly thereafter, I was driving it down the interstate at 70mph, and the front wheels locked! I came skidding to a halt in the center lane! Fearing for my life, I placed the car in reverse, the drivetrain freed, and I pulled off the highway, with a large and sudden lurch about every rotation of the tire. Took the car to my nearest dealer, a Honda place... found out the front AWD differential broke a tooth off of the ring gear! Again, called Ford! This time I was notified it was a safety issue, but was the result of improper servicing... the fluid gets old, runs low, and the differential overheats! Okay, the car was at Merchants two days prior for service, went to the store and raised hell! They showed me the Ford authorized service notes... the differential is a sealed unit, cannot be drained, does not have a fluid level indication or verification, and is supposed to last the life of the vehicle. I did some research, found out that when Ford took this design from Volvo, they eliminated the oil cooler for non-turbo vehicles as a cost savings, despite Volvo insisting on the necessity! So again, out of luck... did the replacement in my driveway... I couldn’t believe it, but there were shop notes written on the broken diff!!!! That’s right, within 20k miles, this explorer suffered a failure and had been repaired at Ford!!! This was apparently the reason a car with only 20k miles was traded in. We are at 95k miles now... we’ve been trying to get rid of it for years and can’t. All of these issues have depreciated the car farther than we can afford to pay vs the loan... so instead, we spend about 3k annually repairing it... the car is paid off in 2019 and we’re going to dump it to who ever will give a nickel for it! Now second gear is starting to slip... this thing is just a timebomb... and what else do we do but wait for the next explosion and hope it gets totaled? Not what I paid for when looking for a family vehicle... but definitely where we find ourselves!

Great idea promoting the CO detectors. As a paramedic with 28 years experience I can tell you that people have little idea how quickly fumes can reach dangerous levels, even with todays well controlled engines. Also, this is the first I've heard of these in car devices, so thanks for that.

Thanks Alex for this long waited video. It’s very informative and helpful. Some of Ford cars have been known for factory defects and Ford always keeps on denying any issues with these cars. For example, some models have issues with the steering power which can be a safety issues. The Taurus has been known for premature water pump failure and guess for how much it is repaired, $ 2,000. Yes, 2,000 because the defected part is located inside the engine. I hope you can make a video regarding this poor design of water pump

have a 2013 and have no problem with mine. As for the recall it was on the news and it started with Police Depts. that were heavily modifying their cruisers and not sealing correctly. Also helps that you ensure you do proper maintenance and not letting the check engine light go on forever.

What in the world gave you that false impression? Automakers have had recalls and class action lawsuits for a very long time, not at all a situation of being protected and not "go after them". Should they be more forthcoming? Sure, but this kind of corporate strategy to do damage control and minimize loss is typical in most industries. No company is going to product a list of every possible way their product can harm you, which would make the average uneducated consumer think another product is safer merely because they did not disclose a similar list.

Two years ago my son bought a 2015 Certified pre-owned Explorer. He has had zero problems with it, and no headache or other symptoms. In most cases of the Police versions, Ford was able to eliminate CO intrusion into the cab by sealing improperly installed emergency equipment (by a 3rd party upfitter) where new openings made to route wiring were not properly sealed, allowing exhaust fumes to enter through newly made holes in the rear hatch. In some cases this alone did not resolve the issue, but it did in most cases, including entire fleets.

My 2010 Ram 1500 with a 5.7L had broken exhaust manifold studs and FCA replaced the manifolds, studs, nuts, shields and gaskets free of charge under what they called some sort if customer care program. Not a recall or service bulletin but something else. The truck was way out if warranty with 130,000 km and just over 7 years old. All because of the risk of Co2 getting in the cab through the heater ducts.

I work as a Ford tech, and this issue is labeled as a customer satisfaction program, basically a recall. If you have the issue just go to the dealer and tell them you smell exhaust fumes. I've personally done tons of these and they're absolutely free to the customer. Not sure what this is all about.

Glad I stumbled on this video in time. I was looking to buy a 2017 Ford Explorer platinum. This video has changed my perception/interest in this vehicle. Many people not aware that Ford explorer water pump replacement cost is $1500.00, because you have to remove engine and remove timing chain cover. Go Ford, smart engineering. This cost doesn't include timing chain replacement and Cam phasers, because they wear out at the same time as water pump since coolant leaks inside the engine from water pump.

I want to thank you so much for posting this video in such detail. Me and my wife recently purchased a 2016 Ford explorer and it has been nothing more than an absolute nightmare of problems. Take it to the dealership for recall repairs and it wasn't correctly fixed and I had no idea about the carbon monoxide so we will be taking this back already and I intend to show this video to them to ensure all repairs are made at their expense. I would really like to sue Ford over this problem in many others. Our vehicle is like brand new but a complete lemon

Alex, great video as always, however, the reason Ford has not issued instructions to check exhaust manifolds on civilian units is because there have only been evidence (so far) of cracked manifolds on the 3.7 V6 (Lincoln/Mustang engine), which is only available on the Police Interceptor Utility and not the civilian ones. I'm sure you knew that, but, checking on the Ford Explorer forums and Blue Oval forums, also confirms that. No 3.5 V6 models have been found with cracked manifolds. It's also important to note, that, only a small percentage of civilian models have come back with high CO numbers (given the amount sold, as you pointed out). I was well aware of this issue and we just bought a brand new (2017 leftover) Explorer a couple of weeks ago and even my insurance company knew about this issue and told me to make sure the recall was performed on it (in Canada, they are treating it like a Transport Canada Safety recall). My late build 2017 (was built in Oct 17, Job 2 build) had the updated parts on it already, but, I did my own CO test (as per online instructions) and was happy to see, no appreciable levels. But, I'm glad you made this video Alex, since, it is a weird one for sure, given how rare any car on the road suffers from this issue at all.... kind of makes you wonder what conditions are unique to the Explorer for this to even happen at all.....

Thanks for doing this video and bringing a serious issue to everyone's attention. This is precisely the reason why I always drive with at least the driver's door window open. At least a crack anyway because you never know. I like to have some fresh air entering the vehicle at all times and this is what I do. You don't always know if you have a leak in your exhaust or if a rubber plug/grommet has dropped off the vehicle. Just my thing.It is amazing that Ford continues to operate in a manner that is questionable and knowing about certain defects and deficiencies that can cause death with their vehicles. I guess they forgot about the disaster regarding the Pinto in the 1970's and their exploding fuel tanks. The cost to fix this was somewhere under $10 per unit plus the cost of recalling each vehicle that left the factory.I guess Ford also forgot about the horrendous steering columns they produced where the gearshift dropped out of Park. This happened with every Ford, Lincoln, Mercury, and Truck with a gearshift mounted steering column and they knew about that it as far back as the late 1950's. They continued to produce that same type of column in all of their vehicles for the next 20 years. It wasn't until 1980 when it was completely redesigned. Lots of people were run over and killed and it took Government pressure for Ford to do something about it. Only a small number of vehicles were actually repaired but the rest were not. Ford was able to get away with NOT fixing any more columns in a mass recall by issuing owners with a "Warning Label" that was to be placed on the dashboard. Ford complained that if they were to recall every vehicle, it would tie up their service bays at every dealership in North America for the next 20 years. I remember my Dad receiving his warning label and it was placed on the steering column. A complete disgrace! This actually happened to my Dad twice in his 1975 Torino. Luckily no one was hurt but from then on, before shifting to Park, he would put it in Neutral, set the brake, and then into Park. Google "Runaway Ford" if you want to find out more. Absolutely shocking.

Let's not leave out their peeling white paint problems, plastic intake manifolds that cracked, blend door actuators that fail and are secreted deep inside in the dash, failing power window regulators, failing steering shafts, failing timing chains, shooting spark plugs, etc.....

Marvin: Peeling paint has been a problem that has plagued auto manufacturers before. The problem lies in the type of primer used on the assembly line and a different paint formulation. GM had this problem as well but only with certain colours. In my case, my 2 tone Chevy truck (white and blue) the white paint was fine but the blue came off in sheets while rinsing off with a garden hose. Fixed under warranty. Plastic being used under the hood is not a good idea either as my plastic intake on my Safari is cracked. Expensive to replace. Nothing but crap being produced now and the consumer is replacing vehicles like they would with last years cell phone or Playstation.

I do not believe for a second that its due to cracked manifolds. I own a 2017 Explorer sport. Got it with 10 miles off the lot. First hard acceleration onto the highway I could smell exhaust. This was with less than 100 miles on the clock. To this day if I accelerate hard I get a nice wiff of the exhaust. Sad but on long trips I keep the sunroof open and my windows cracked. appreciate the code for the detector. Will be buying one soon!

Good idea. However, 100ppm and below cause chronic issues. I have a low level CO monitor that scans constantly in my ‘15 Explorer. It goes off at 15ppm and you would be surprised how often that happens at low levels. I have the recall letter to get this corrected and just have to get that scheduled.

It's a joke because there is nothing to do, on a vehicle that needs nothing done because it does not have excessive exhaust coming in. It's like going to a doctor and telling him to sew your finger back on when you finger was not severed off. What are they to do? Check it and fix any fault found, and do nothing if no fault is found as is the case on the vast majority of them.

I brought my 2014 Explorer in to the dealer for exhaust leaks before the customer satisfaction bulletin was released, ended up paying out of pocket for the "phase 1" repairs less than 1k miles outside of my 36k bumper to bumper warranty. Noticed it still to be leaking, "phase 2" repairs included replacement of the entire rear exhaust assembly with turn down exhaust tips. I promptly traded it in.

Alex, first, thank you again for the Chicago mechanic you suggested to me for my 2005 Mercedes C55 AMG, and secondly, isn't crazy that my full time vehicle is a 2017 Ford Explorer Platinum edition! When I purchased the vehicle in May, the dealer at Fox Ford did NOT mention anything about the CO2 concerns that are making news now. About a month into owning the SUV, I read an article and forwarded it to my sales rep at Fox Ford, and she told me she had not heard anything or was aware of ANY issue. 2 weeks ago I got the notice you are talking about for my 2017 Explorer and I will be setting up an appointment ASAP. I am very concerned that Ford and its salespeople DID NOT say anything to its customers when they knew about this problem since 2012. Full disclosure is the best policy as it will keep your valued customers feeling valued. Great work again spreading your knowledge and making everyone better informed, and I will pass it forward. I think you meant "CO" (carbon monoxide) as opposed to "CO2" (carbon dioxide). A slow CO2 leak into the cabin would likely not be a concern as long as fresh air kept coming in.

Joshua Gorton The reason ford hasn't done much has to do with this is because this issue mainly exists with the cop car varient and specifically is a result of aftermarket , third party vehicle modifications made to the vehicle for police duty that were improperly made, leading to gas fumes being able to enter the vehicle. Ford launched an investigation and found this was the cause of the problem. They took pictures and gave a detailed explanation of why ths was happening. Despite the fact that this wasn't fords fault, they offered to fix the issue as a sign of good faith. So why are civilians complaining? Look at it this way, someone tells you your car has issues with exhaust issues, you're sitting in traffic and someone is sitting in a old car in front of you, you would smell those fumes, maybe you would think that was your car. The proof? As previously stated, CO2 is odorless but alot of the complaints are about the smell. So they aren't experiencing the issue.

Recently, I've started getting unexplainable headaches while driving, extreme eye tiredness and shortness of breath. I just assumed I got covid but this video is really making me rethink. I have a 2016 Ford Explorer and recently, I also noticed a leak twice or thrice from underneath my car. Looked just like water, right after taking my car out from parking it was there. I don't know if its related, but maybe its important to note- I've never had any lights modifications or anything of that sort. Please help me out, should I spend my time and money trying to figure out if this is my car's problem as well, or is all of this definitely unrelated to my car.

The place that needs to be checked is the fitting seal between the manifold and CAT and the CAT back portion of the exhaust, which is right under the transmission tunnel or near it in most cars (it is possible for gas to come up through the shift boot.) One reason I suggest this is that, if most of the complaints are from law enforcement this would be very problematic as they often need to sit in the vehicle stationary with the engine running, however for most common buyers the airflow under the car would carry the gas away. I am fairly certain, my 2016 Mustang GT was leaking exhaust this way - (mind you I changed the exhaust to an aftermarket exhaust within 2000 miles and the problem went away, I believe the fix happened because new gaskets and sealant was put on during the change.)

Toyota infotainment systems had issues in 2015. My parents had a 15 highlander that had the issue, and a friend of mine had the same issue in his 13 tacoma. The dealerships say it’s a USB problem, but that doesn’t actually fix the issue. Might be worth looking into for a video maybe

Before I got my 2012 Explorer last October I actually ran the VIN number and saw the recall on it and got it taken care of. I never had any health issues while driving it and I had it fixed within 3 weeks of purchasing the vehicle. There were a few other recalls on the Explorer and I got them all done as well.

I just purchased a used 2017 Ford Explorer, not sure about the exhaust fumes but I've also purchased one of those CO 2, detectors, My question is where in the vehicle was the detector placed ? The Explorer has power jacks in the rear compartment, the middle compartment, and the front compartment, So after your test you didn't say where your detector was plugged in?

LegitStreetCars I’ve been going through some intense nightmares with my 2013 Ford Explorer XLT, in addition to the exhaust issue. We bought the car a year old, with only 20k miles, and still under factory power train. The first issue was with the AC system. My wife was picking up our kids from school, and while waiting in line, a teacher runs over to the car and tells her it’s on fire! My wife shut off the car, determined it was just smoke, but the engine was seemingly locked up! I towed the car back to the dealer, we found the AC pump actually seized and would not disengage. Of course this wasn’t covered under power train, so I had the car towed to an ASE certified mechanic to perform the repair. Turns out, the pump had already been replaced! Since then, we have had a pump failure every year to two years! The most recent was last year, and we literally replaced every component associated with the AC system... the entire car was disassembled! We’ve contacted ford numerous times for this, always receiving a letter of non-liability as the issue has been assessed and deemed a non-safety issue! Shortly thereafter, I was driving it down the interstate at 70mph, and the front wheels locked! I came skidding to a halt in the center lane! Fearing for my life, I placed the car in reverse, the drivetrain freed, and I pulled off the highway, with a large and sudden lurch about every rotation of the tire. Took the car to my nearest dealer, a Honda place... found out the front AWD differential broke a tooth off of the ring gear! Again, called Ford! This time I was notified it was a safety issue, but was the result of improper servicing... the fluid gets old, runs low, and the differential overheats! Okay, the car was at Merchants two days prior for service, went to the store and raised hell! They showed me the Ford authorized service notes... the differential is a sealed unit, cannot be drained, does not have a fluid level indication or verification, and is supposed to last the life of the vehicle. I did some research, found out that when Ford took this design from Volvo, they eliminated the oil cooler for non-turbo vehicles as a cost savings, despite Volvo insisting on the necessity! So again, out of luck... did the replacement in my driveway... I couldn’t believe it, but there were shop notes written on the broken diff!!!! That’s right, within 20k miles, this explorer suffered a failure and had been repaired at Ford!!! This was apparently the reason a car with only 20k miles was traded in. We are at 95k miles now... we’ve been trying to get rid of it for years and can’t. All of these issues have depreciated the car farther than we can afford to pay vs the loan... so instead, we spend about 3k annually repairing it... the car is paid off in 2019 and we’re going to dump it to who ever will give a nickel for it! Now second gear is starting to slip... this thing is just a timebomb... and what else do we do but wait for the next explosion and hope it gets totaled? Not what I paid for when looking for a family vehicle... but definitely where we find ourselves!

THANKS!! 2012 Ford Explorer 75k miles: WOW a friend fell asleep and ran off the road waking in a field, no major damage, other than a few brush scrapes/scratches and the need for a re-alignment. He didn't get the needed alignment done at the Ford dealer! Many owners don't get service done at Ford DEALER expensive service centers, after the Factory warranty expires, OR EVER!

I have a 2015 explorer and my wife was complaining of exhaust smell coming in after a quick acceleration. I disassembled the vehicle and there are two very large holes above both of the exhaust tips that lead into the rear body area and go into the rear quarter panels. I noticed you did not mention these two holes but I believe these holes to be the main culprit for the exhaust intrusion.

You can also check air quality if you have a high-end Samsung phone. They are equipped with PO2 sensor and you can use it via the pre-installed S-Health app.

Before I dropped my Note 4 and had to go back to my S3, I was liking that P02 sensor. It's very interesting, but something I know from working around medical professionals is that taking someone's O2 levels with one of these sensors is an inaccurate way to discover if their is carbon monoxide poisoning. You have to go off of symptoms. Your O2 levels in your blood could still look good, the ER would send you home, you'd pass out and die...but then again if your car was the source you may have gotten worse than in your drive in. Long story short, be aware of symptoms or get a CO2 detector as these blood sensors you're referring to have been found to be a failed way to protect someone from carbon monoxide poisoning.

As I recall ford successfully proved that most if not all claims the rear cargo area had been modified (holes drilled) allowing the co in and stock they get none. After hearing all this my dad stuck several co monitors in my moms explorer with readings of zero same with 4 other explorers I know of

I have been leasing the Ford Explorer for the past 6 years (three 2-year leases). I can tell you that all three lease vehicles have exhaust gases coming in to the cabin. I currently have a 2019 Explorer and the problem has not been addressed. It is most noticeable under acceleration. The odor resembles that of hair permanent chemicals. It is very noticeable. I find it very interesting that Ford reprogrammed the HVAC to turn off the recycling of cabin air under acceleration as a patch, or hack, that has failed miserably. Currently I do not believe that Ford has a handle on this problem as it persists through the 2019 models. The lapdog media accepted their proclamations and it should be obvious to all that the federal oversight on safety has failed as miserably as the Boeing MCAS system. I try to avoid hard accelerations but that is not a fix. Obviously there is some level of exhaust being inhaled all of the time. Given all the additives in today's gasoline, that is almost certain to cause cancers over the long haul. The idea that there is an acceptable level of toxins in the air (that is very noticeable), or an acceptable level of fatalities, is really unconscionable.

Commenting to win the detector. Also, you should do a video on a common issue present in the Dodge Ram 5.9 magnum motors. Common issue is cylinder heads cracking causing overheating and a major bill. Also their intake manifold are not any good with their plenum gaskets. Do some research on it and you will find it's a major costly defect and may be a good video to do.

Julia M Nissan mostly worked out the kinks in their CVTs, and as long as you change the transmission fluid every 60k miles like the manual says (a lot of people run into problems because Nissan dealers are the most unscrupulous in the industry, and 9/10 will claim it doesn't need changing so they can get that sweet $6k out of warranty rebuild), just about any Nissan updated in 2010 or later will be fine. Internet car guys love to circlejerk about how awful they think Nissan is, but really, they're 85% as long-lived as Toyotas for half the CPO price with double the options. Most Nissan haters object to the CVT, and make up ridiculously exaggerated concerns about reliability and build quality because they know the average consumer doesn't care about "shift feel" and they'd sound silly, but they *really* don't want to see another Nissan "appliance" on the road and will happily lie to put more people in brown manual wagons, which Nissan doesn't make. Most people will be by far better off buying a used Nissan instead of a used Toyota/Honda/Subaru, as long as it's the right Nissan. Keep in mind I said *just about,* though. As for me, I happily drive a fully loaded 2011 Quest that's well past the point where it would've had problems if it had the defective CVT, and it actually ranks higher in reliability than the equivalent model year Sienna, which is near the bottom of the charts because Toyota was having their own transmission and especially electrical problems at the time in their large family cars. However, the Altima kept using the bad transmissions until 2014, and the Rogue AFAIK still uses them. The Rogue Sport is in the clear as far as I know, though. You're probably driving an affected car with your 2015 Rogue, but since it's still under warranty, see if there's anyway you can return it, sue Nissan, join a class-action, or collect a settlement from an existing one. Most lawyers will do a free consultation, and that might be all you need.

Had Infiniti G20 91', 150k miles strong. 02 Buick Regel 3.8 Very good and comfortable suspension for pothole Nyc. The 15 rogue 19k miles had slipping trans and was resolved by a reflash also changed seat frame, track slips, , but suspension sways side to side is my current problem.

i have a 2010 altima with cvt... 110k miles and no issues....change fluid every 50k and you should be ok. eventually the " rubber band" will snap and then its new tranny time...cannot really rebuild those like a normal trans.

working shlub > 110k miles Uh oh. I'd suggest selling it while you can, while most people don't know about that issue yet. Yours will likely snap less than 2 years from now with that mileage. That's at the very most, there's a good chance it won't last 1. When it does, expect $6k+, and that's not including the other powertrain damage a failing transmission could cause before you realize it's failing. Get out if it ASAP, while it still has value, some dealers won't take affected Nissans as trade-ins already. When you manage to get rid of it, replace it with a post-redesign Maxima or Sentra, or a post-2007 Murano. Other Nissans except the pre-2014 Altima and current Rogue are now OK, but coming from an Altima, I think those three would be the only ones to suit your needs.

I just test drove one otherday and the co2 coming into cabin from a 2018 base model was horrendous. Just getting on hwy from a merge ramp getting up to speed up hill. So it's not just 3rd party add ons and holes being drilled. I took it back and that ended my interest in explorer or Ford / Lincoln.

Last year, I purchased a certified used 2015 Explorer from a local dealership. When bringing it in for service, I had mentioned that I had heard about this issue on the PI models, but not the civilian models. The service adviser assured me that it was only the PI models and I should not worry about it, but if I was really concerned, he would see if he could get it approved. Maybe I should go push for it to be done, and maybe I should pull a body plug somewhere that's on the checklist to make sure they really do it. I'm ordering the C02 detector now.

I had a 1991 Ford Explorer was the most fun vehicle I ever had. I actually took it off road brand new. It did very well driving up steep dry creeks and fording across streams. Camping and hiking with friends it was awesome. I even did some Dukes of Hazzard air borne jumps with no problems Idid upgrade shocksto Ranchos. Someone crashed into it while it was parked it never drove the same so I sold it. The new Explorers look great but I heard they are no longer built over a ladder frame instead it has a full unibody which makes it unsuitable for off road driving.
