I am a Ram 1500 owner with the 5.7. It has cylinder deactivation as well, called MDS, Multi displacement system, which is similar to AFM. I am surprised to hear that you can't turn it off and run on all 8. With the MDS system, either turning on the tow/haul mode or using the gear limiter will disable the MDS. I am surprised GMs system doesn't work similarly.

They can't put a button in the truck to deactivate DFM or AFM. The EPA won't give them "credits" for a defeatable fuel economy/emissions system. It's the same reason why some vehicles don't allow you to turn off the auto start-stop system that shuts the engine off when you come to a complete stop. They don't get credit for having it if the manufacturer lets the owner turn it off. AFM and DFM can be disabled. There are devices that plug into the OBDII port down by the hood release that will not let the engine deactivate cylinders. There are also tuners that can disable the system permanently. Either way, the engine will be in V8 mode permanently and you will never have a chance of a lifter issue. AFM and DFM are a lot more reliable than they used to be. The primary way they fail these days is by waiting too long to change engine oil. Dirty oil causes the vast majority of lifter issues. It's similar to the most common ways Ford engines develop problems... dirty oil clogging up the oil feeds for the cam phasers and lash adjusters. People buy expensive full synthetics that tell you it's good for 10,000 miles. It's far better for the engine to buy cheaper syn-blends and change them every 5,000 miles.

I have a question, do these engines still build up carbon? I wanted to upgrade my 2011 but all my mechanic friends advised against that claiming that the new ones have problems related to direct injection. my current truck has about 150000miles on it.
@KevinsAutoChannel3 жыл бұрын
Yes direct injection engines do build up carbon because the fuel is injected straight into the cylinder bypassing the valves. Port injections sprays onto the valves and thus cleaning off the carbon build up. The best modern engines have both like the 5.0 from Ford.

@karlschauff79893 жыл бұрын
@@surffiend757 There is AFM and there is DFM, so you need to be specific. 1st gen AFM engines were in the 2013 and earlier trucks. 2nd gen AFM engines were in the 2014 to 2018 Silverado/Sierra 1500. They were also used in the 2019 Silverado LD LT which is really the same truck as the 2014 to 2018 Silverado 1500. The new body style 2019+ Silverado Custom and WT trims also use the 2nd gen AFM engine. The new bodystyle 2019+ Silverado LT trim and higher trims use the new DFM engine. A 2019 Silverado LD LT would have the 2nd gen AFM engine. It does not have DFM like the truck in this video. AFM shuts off half of the cylinders and always the same four cylinders. DFM shuts off up to 7 cylinders in different patterns to make it smoother and more efficient.

From LG all the way to Ford are all the same. It's the reality of our lives. My previous 2014 and 2012 with the same engine easily went to 100k miles without any engine problem. We should be worried about other parts of the truck to go out of service, like these complicate door handles, seats, plastic parts, infotainment unit, two many computer modules, ... Specially now that CHINA will be out of picture for a while. I hope all manufacturers come back to the US and take care of the quality again. Sorry, I can't say anything about the muffler noise.
