We don’t get the STI in the UK anymore. Theres a good selection of used examples with low mileage fortunately at Subaru dealers but we dont get the same range or options as they do in America. The new Impreza, XV and Forester are all CVT transmission, we cant get manual anymore. Subaru should give us a choice, and most UK Subaru buyers would prefer manual. Its wrong and I dont know why Subaru have done this here. They all have this isight technology (which only works with CVT) but im not bothered about that. I can use my own eyes to see where im going and whats around me. Too many people are bad drivers these days, they lack observational skills and rely on car tech to protect them. I will have to buy second hand if I want a Subaru with manual transmission.

22b would kill this thing around a track. I used to love subaru after having one as a first car, but to say their performance lines have been stagnant over the last 2 decades would be an understatement.
@WannabeWRX4 жыл бұрын
No it wouldn't. The 22b's only advantage would be its weight compared to the S209. But the 22b would be left behind starting at the first corner as its suspension is leagues behind that of the S209. And the boost response on the 22b is also much slower and requires a higher RPM - and at less power and torque output - than with the S209.
@VeliRajasaar4 жыл бұрын
Yep, S209 is way faster than the classics... :D I owned a 2015 STI and now went to 2007 hawkeye. Tracked both quite a bit and the way the '15 put the power down and carried it through corners... The oldie squats quite a bit. Plus one thing that a lot of people forget and marginalise is the dual AVCS of the newer ones. That is the only difference between the two engines, but the difference it made both in fuel consumption and performance is crazy... In 4th, the '07 feels almost like hitting a wall whereas the' 15 ripped through it like it was 3rd gear. Both were/are set up really similarly - exhaust, intake, boost upped a bit, old one is making 295whp and new one was at 305. Not sure I agree with the boost statement though - the 22B runs equal length headers and a twin-scroll turbo. I have never tried one (only seen one around ever), but pretty sure it hits full boost by 3k RPM. My stock single scroll VF48 on the '15 hit 1,3 BAR by 3100 RPM, the ball-bearing VF34 on the' 07 feels pretty much the same.
@WannabeWRX4 жыл бұрын
@@VeliRajasaar Your 22b information is bad. Twin-scrolls were not used in the GC-series Imprezas. The first STi to use the Twin-scroll is the Version 8 (MY2003) - with the VF37 (standard) and VF36 (Spec C) turbos. The 22b used standard UEL headers and VF23 turbo. Also, the 22b hits boost later than the Version 4 Type R it is based on (and both are boost around 4k RPM). The slightly wider stance and Prodrive suspension make it a very good handler in the twisties, but it would not keep up with the later Subaru models - and in some cases, it would not even be close.

The value proposition for the S209 over the base STI is that it's a limited run with a number of upgrades from the STI works shop. While there will always be those people who buy the base STI and add $25k in mods, the S209 seems made for the collector who will leave it unmolested.

I ran low 13s (bone stock) in my 2004 STi. I can't believe that 16 years later, the STi isn't any faster. Meanwhile all the other cars (Vettes, Camaros, Mustangs, etc) are getting significantly faster. A Camaro SS back in 2002 made 320 hp and ran low 13s (similar to an STi). Now the Camaro SS makes 455 hp and runs low 12s @ 116 mph. Subaru needs to get its act together because it's fallen so far behind all the cars that it used to be able to keep up with down a track or around a road course. And don't say the STi is a rally car. The STi is now built and designed for the street.

Hoping for a more sophisticated WRX when they transition to the new global platform for, I think, the 2021 model. Current Impreza has a split personality. The non WRX Impreza on the new platform is a much better car overall, but has no upgrades with a more powerful engine, while the WRX and STI are balls to the wall sport models. What Suburu needs to do is make the 2.5 liter from the Forester the base engine, make a sport model with a mildly tuned turbo, and a then the WRX with a more hardcore performance orientation. Hopefully they can switch to a turbo with good low end torque, like Honda and VW.

Subaru knows what they're doing. They offer the US a special car only like every 20 years so they're highly sought after and highly priced. It's an awesome car, but I like my 2020 WRX just fine.

Was watching some Best Motoring videos and a 95 STi did 1/4 mile in 13,319 secs, a 2015 STi in 13.2 secs and this does in 13.4 secs. I love STis, but spending this much on this car is a mistake imo.

"As always, clutch slippage is required" lol wtf my '17 sti has been chirping tires on dry pavement for 60k miles on the stock clutch with absolutely no slipping. Also maybe the stats got worse from the extra weight cuz my '16 & '17 sti's both ran a 4.5/4.6 religiously. I think with the 209 they finally addressed all the weak spots in the car and maxed out what the stock ej can sustain.
@VeliRajasaar4 жыл бұрын
I think he meant the way you have to launch it for good times. Dumping the clutch is very heavy on drivetrain components, which is why you hold a steady 4-5k and then gradually release the clutch, slipping it a bit in the process. So you choose the cheaper component to wear out :) If your clutch doesn't slip after 60k and you've launched it quite a bit, be ready for swapping your axles or driveshaft soon... :P

As a Subaru owner and Subaru engine builder, this is a hard ‘no’ for me. A set of Ohlins Road and Track coilovers completely transforms the STI. A couple of thousand dollars in suspension bits will make any STI drive better than the S209. Reprogramming the ECU will net more power than the S209 without any sacrifice in reliability. Installing one of my billet-wheel-upgraded stock STI VF48 turbos will make 100hp over the S209 with with same spool characteristics. The Brembo brakes on all STIs are trash for track days. $2500 gets you a set of bolt-on AP Racing front brakes that actually work, reduce sprung weight, and even fit under 17in wheels. Other than the curb appeal and the limited-edition factor, I don’t see any reason to buy one. A regular STI with above-mentioned upgrades will cost less and perform better even after taking install labor costs into account.

You should really watch the videos about how this car was developed to appreciate it. It’s almost completely made by hand. It ran a 2.56 at VIR, which matches the 640hp CTS-V’s lap time according to Car and Driver. Think of it as Subaru’s version of a GT3 RS.
@Pavel_Engines4 жыл бұрын
Joseph Miller the CTS-V weight an additional 700lb more than the S209. That’s huge! I’m not surprised a lighter car can do lap times of a much heavier car with twice the power. For example, one of my track cars is a 2500lb Nissan that only makes 280whp but on a road course keeps up with 400whp BMW sedans that weight in the 3200-3500lb range. It makes a huge difference in handling, acceleration, and braking.
@millll111lllI4 жыл бұрын
Pavel Osovets Well the CTS-V is the 3rd fastest sedan C&D ever tested. Faster than a 911 Turbo S, R8 V10 Plus, 2013 ZL1, M2 Comp...

Pavel Osovets Also, the CTS-V is on GM’s Alpha platform, which is a proven track performer, especially under the current Camaro

@foxtrot6854 жыл бұрын
While I agree the S4 for performance, the new S4 is boring in terms of looks. I'm also disappointed in the lack of manual, even DSG for that matter (wonder if the 8s auto allows the engine to gurgle during upshifts?).
@Kiss__Kiss4 жыл бұрын
@@foxtrot685 With respect to the "gurgle," it most definitely does. The 8 speed, while not a DSG, is definitely more reliable as well. Unlike the earlier B8s with the broken down mechatronics. If other manufacturers, including Audi's very own SQ5 can have it, and work brilliantly paired with the same S/C 3.0 found in the B8 S4. I am sure it is still awesome enough to shift as fast.
