The 2021 Lexus GX460 is an Old Truck That Could Last Forever

The #LexusGX460 shares a platform with the legendary Toyota Land Cruiser Prado in other markets. While it goes a more luxury route here in the US, the 2021 #LexusGX continues to be a surprisingly strong seller for Lexus, despite the age of the current generation GX460. Expect to see a new model soon with improved fuel economy and much better tech but until then; this current model should last a very long time if properly cared for.

True story: We have a 2017 with 55,000 miles. Runs so smooth and I drive the crap out of it. Some off road and lots of snow driving during ski season. We took it recently to Yosemite National Park and on day three we stopped to help a 2020 Q7 that was pulled over with its hazards on. They had a flat and didn’t realize it and drove however many miles till the tire completely collapsed. I said “where is your spare?” They don’t come with one bc of Audi trying to pad mpg. Wtf?! The driver didn’t know he had a low tire bc the tire pressure monitor system said it was fine. He admitted that the electrical system was horrible and he had it in the shop 4-5 times for electrical hiccups since he they bought it. Too much technology! I drove him back to where services were and he could call Audi. Lol! Love our GX! Bullet proof, reliable and high resale value. Those who know, know.

You complain that it’s an“old” style with old technology , but one might say why change something that still looks good and sells well. Lexus are known for their highly reliable cars. Why change what works well? Changing things doesn’t make it better. Lexus have worked out all the kinks in this model to be a very reliable, luxurious and high quality vehicle.

I agree with you that this this dude nitpicks brands like Lexus. Meanwhile, he kisses up to the Genesis brand. The fact that he praises Hyundai/Genesis and Kia despite those vehicles’ notorious engine problems and recalls; Kia just trended on Google for 410k recalls again. Mr. Redline, you sound like a perfect candidate for a Kia Telluride. The telematics look so “new” and it even has a heads up display. It gets good gas mileage for its class and it has really nice graphics. Since you value the technology above and beyond the actual reliability and capability of a truck, you should stick to 4 cylinder millennial wagons that will inevitably break down prematurely and lose half their value in the 1st 12 months.

In 2020, the Lexus GX sold 28,519 units in the North American Market, a 2,574 unit increase from 2019. This car will continue to sell, regardless!
@emptytube

The rise in the sale numbers of the GX from 2019 to 2020 is due partly to the 2020 refresh/redesign of the front spindle grill and the new sexier key fob. To me these redesigns look a lot better than before. That is why I am reluctant to buy any GX’s older than 2020. And I predict 2022 model will see another increase in sale numbers because of the redesign of the infotainment center with Apple play and android auto(finally!!).

Thanks Mr. Redline.. You do a great job with your reviews.. I love to watch and learn.. But I want to point out that things that you say are 'dated' or 'old'.. I don't mind things being old or dated if they work and function better (and are more reliably). I have noticed that a lot (and A LOT) of the so called 'new' or 'updated' things are actually worse than the 'dated' things they replaced. A lot of the "updated' things are worse, or are harder to use, or don't look as good - as the older thing it replaced. If its not * REALLY * better, don't mess with something that looks good and still works fine.

I think also from a manufacturers point of view, that Toyota has to prioritize which specific product line they should update. I do love that it still offers a NA V8(albeit down on power and super thirsty), and is mostly unstoppable off-pavement and super-reliable(with components that are 10-20years old, it should be) . I love how everybody gives the JGC and Durango crap for being so old, yet Lexus demands serious coin for even older vehicles with significantly less tech.

The weirdest thing about the GX for me is that the Prado's interior was refreshed a few years ago and is now much more up to date but for some reason they still haven't updated the GX. They've updated the exterior multiple times but the interior is still pretty much the same as it was back in 2010. Also the lack of Apple Carplay and Android Auto is totally inexcusable in 2021 and a total dealbreaker for me.

I don't know why but watching this guy gives me the feeling that he loves his German luxury SUVs. I mean while almost every reviewers have nothing but praise about this particular vehicle, this guy managed to insert something negative in every sentence. He's like "this GX can swim in the ocean but I'm afraid it cannot fly!" kind of reviewer. Whether that's a good thing or not, 🤷‍♂️

I really wanted an LR4, but in the current market, a 2016 with 50k miles is the same price as a 2019 GX 460 with 30K miles. The GX is a Japanese built Land Rover with impeccable reliability and outstanding off road chops. I completely agree that it doesn't really make a lot of sense to buy a new one, since for better or worse, the GX evolved at a Darwinian pace. I have a 2019 and while I miss CarPlay, the Bluetooth Integration, at least with an iPhone, is pretty easy to live with. For instance, I can have Siri play music, text of make phone calls, navigate, and pretty much anything else that I would otherwise with CarPlay, without taking my hands off of the wheel. I can't see navigation output on the screen, but phone calls, podcasts, and music are there, with touch controls. There is a third party solution to add Apple CarPlay and Android Auto to the display, hiding the backend bits in the console. And as far as the rear door, it's a lot quicker and easier access than dealing with a hatch. What you give up in rain protection, you get back in convenience, speed of access, and having a portal for long objects.

I'm sure this thing will last forever, but reliability only gets you so far in justifying that price of $70k, which is utterly absurd for such an outdated vehicle. They need to fully redesign this thing and bring it into the 21st century if they expect people to pay anywhere near that price.

i have a 2005 GX in my garage. engine is still good, just saving it for my kid. i wouldn't spend the money on new one. $70k is too steep plus i don't need a sport package. and apple carplay isn't even an option? back in the day i don't think lexus offered anything but leather seats with navigation as standard. today, the bare bones minimum of this luxury brand gets you not much at all. i just paid $40k for a top of the line outback. not the same cache, or engine but i have everything i could ask for with every nicety and safety feature known - and even those unknown, to man.

Good review - thank you. You mention buying used . . . almost always a very reasonable decision except if looking used within 2-3 years. Two - three year old GXs are within $3-4 thousand of new with a good dealer discount and Lexus Cash...need to go quite a bit older (which is good too). AFA your thought that the 4Runner is a better buy bkz of its updated infotainment system...so true, it is beyond absurd that GXs have not updated their infotainment system...it leaves GX enthusiasts/buyers feeling kind of disrespected to be honest. However, infotainment system aside, you cannot forget the GX's V8 over the 4Runner's somewhat under-powered feeling V6 or GX's better appointed interior. Both are clearly great trucks so the issue between the two unfortunately (and unnecessarily) comes down to...apart from styling preferences...what is more important to you...better infotainment unit or V8 with somewhat more upscale interior. Really can't go wrong either way...both are well built, durable, dependable trucks that if you plan to keep a long time, should serve you well.

Volvo did the same thing with the XC90 Until the 2015 redesign. We bought a 2013 which was the last of the line and my wife actually commented that she liked that the car wasn’t as high-tech. She’s actually regretting the day that we have to buy a new car. I think there’s a place for these cars where theres not gigantic touch screens.

I think a key to your review was your statement of Old and I believe. Vehicles have function, and the fact that it has been around for a long time is a positive. You seem fixated on the words old and dated. The GX has a function, and appeals to a specific group of buyers. When I drive I need to pay attention so the infotainment system is minor, as is the size of the head units on the back of the front seats. This vehicle is a reliable tank, a SUV that you can depend on to get you to and fro, as is the case with so many in this class. I like body on frame and don’t know why you speak as though it is of little use. I guess I need to realize your reviews are based on your likes and taste, and takes away from the review.

I owned one for 4 years. The biggest gripes: the HVAC controls and fan speed are buried in the touch screen. So, for example, to turn the fan speed up or down a single notch, you have to wade through the touch screent. Terrible design / frustrating. Next, the SUV dives horribly when you brake hard. It's disconcerting everytime it happens, even though you are aware of it (a body on frame I suppose). Next, gas mileage is bad. Side swing back door isn't great. Fairly boring to drive and lumbering. No heated stearing wheel. Front end side profile is awkward lookding. Infotainment is lame. Other than that, it's a super vehicle and bullet proof. If you want an off-road capable SUV that you could keep 10-20 years with next to no issues likely appearing, this would do the trick.

Love my Toyotas. I’ve owned 3 4Runners and 3 GX. Prefer the GX hands down. FWIW.. the screen on my 2020 4Runner has glitched out on me a few times and Apple CarPlay can be annoying when it decides to change sources for audio on a whim. Some of us don’t want 767 cockpits. The GX has some of the smoothest power you can get in a REAL SUV. Amazing vehicles.

Just traded a 2021 Toyota 4 runner limited in for the Gx 460 this gx 460 is a amazing road car very smooth on bad roads smooth quit engine v8 burble . I looked at a lot of newer vehicles but all where 6 cylinder I was sold on the v8 in the Lexus mileage is no different than the 4 runner as for out dated I don’t use car play because I don’t like my phone connected to my car stereo I like to listen to music not talk so no big deal to me if you want to play you music use Blue tooth and you have basically the same car play I also like a body on frame instead of a unibody for better vision plus it feels like your driving a much heavier vehicle another reason over the bmw or Land Rover products with I drove for 15 plus years is I can tell you is the Lexus will never see the service center for a thing except oil services so as I say gas is cheaper than service bills at these previous owned euro vehicles I guarantee i will never spend 8,500 to service a Lexus or stop and spend that on fuel .
