The electric SUV for the people gets better with the introduction of the #VolkswagenID4DualMotor. With the addition of a front motor providing an extra ~100 HP, ‪@volkswagen‬ has not only added AWD traction to the mix, but also improved the 0-60 performance to an impressive 5.4 seconds with a combined output of 295 HP and 339 lb-ft of torque. The 2021 #VWID4DualMotor is also now the least expensive way to get an AWD electric SUV with pricing that undercuts rivals by as much as $10,000. The #ID4DualMotor should be at the top of your list for anyone considering a gas powered compact SUV. #VWID4 #ID4 #VolkswagenID4

Finally! The Dual Motor AWD ID.4 is heading to dealer showrooms next month. Volkswagen did give us a ground clearance for the AWD version at 6.7", that includes the extra 0.6" versus the single motor RWD version. VW also told us this is basically the same car as the ID4 GTX that revealed a few months ago, minus the badging and unique styling. We think there is room for VW to do a performance version of this car, but if all you're looking for an an electric SUV for family duty, this is one of the best options out there and a great value.

There's a lot of confusion about ground clearance. Some say it's over 8 inches. I wonder what the deal is there. I agree with the commenter who noted that 6.7" appears to be clearance for the lowered GTX in Europe.

That “wasted space” underneath the front console is a desired feature for women (or anyone) to store their purses/bags so it’s easily reachable and they don’t want to put it on the passenger seat or floor.

Ironically because a vehicle is capable of 0-60 in 3 seconds, it doesn't mean you have to drive that fast. With ICE cars, to be fast you generally have to sacrifice MPG's. In an EV you can still get 140 MPGe in a 3s to 60 vehicle. Unless you have no control over yourself and are afraid to accidentally accelerate to quickly, why would you not want a capable vehicle?

Have you driven a Bolt? If so how does the regen braking compare? I tried out a eFiat and eGolf before getting my Bolt and one of the big reasons I went with the Bolt was the way the OPD felt in it. Personally I think VW chose the right configuration. You're trying to draw people from rav4's CRVs etc. You want the car to feel familiar. But faster. Even the rear wheel drive model is going to feel way faster than a gas powered alternative. 0 to 60 and 7.5 doesn't tell you the whole story. That's an equivalent 0 to 60 or better than the competition but that instant torque is going to make it feel faster than that to most people. And it's a bargain. I really appreciate the fact that they offer a base version with no panoramic roof. If you live in the southwest there's no reason why I want the blazing sun pouring in on my head all damn day. Even with the sun shade that shade still gets hot and then radiates that heat into the cabin. I like the fact that they offer options for people to choose from. The interior looks nice it's got nice ambient lighting it's got good ground clearance, and it rides softer. This is what people want in a family SUV they don't want to have their teeth rattled because the suspension is too stiff. That's one of the problems with the model y. I do agree it would be nice for them to offer a GTX model for people that want one. But they need to build what is going to sell the most first. And they're selling every single one that they build. Maybe once they get on top of existing orders they'll start offering some different options. At least the Volkswagen has a personality. That's one problem with Tesla's they're kind of boring inside and straight line acceleration is about the only thing they're really good at. Also this Volkswagen has a really good charging curve. It doesn't peak as high as a Tesla but it holds that 125 kilowatt for quite a while making it a pretty damn good road tripper. Throw in 3 years of unlimited charging? You got a pretty damn good deal.

@@bmw803 I can see why people would think charging is a problem, but once you start using an EV as your only car, it's generally a non-issue. I pump electrons in 5 seconds for most of the year, I come home from work/errands and plug in, that's the extent of my interaction with fueling the car. You'll easily spend more way more time ina given year at the gas stations, and more time driving to the gas station, than you'll ever spend charging in an EV, even accounting for DCFC on road trips. On road trips it might be a matter of preference, if you drive for thousands of KM without eating, and you pee into bottles, then charging on a road trip will be hassle. However, if you drive like most people do, then you simply take a rest stop as you normally would, then charging an EV is pretty easy, it charges while you're on your rest stop. The obvious exception to all this being - if you have no way to charge at home *or* at work, then don't even bother looking at EVs, DCFC-only on a day-to-day basis would indeed be a big hassle, not worth it at all IMO.

Having seen some video clips about side-underride accidents, I would rather have more reinforcement near the hood, than to have a frunk. kzbin.info/www/bejne/f6O5mp6oZ9qBnKc Sturdy hood and reinforcement might not help much for cars in an underride, but should help for an SUV, maybe? In this ID.4 video at about 2:30, you can see something that looks like an reinforcement bar at where the frunk could be....

A similarly equipped CR-V or Rav4 will run $31k - $33k. Take a $41k ID4, take $7500 off for the tax credit. Take off 3 years of fuel costs, oil changes, etc.. What's the gap then? I was talking to my friend about getting an EV truck. He said, "That will save me $600-$800 a month in fuel." I said" Yea, that's a minimum of $36k over the length of the 5 year loan."

Thanks for the video - great as always. Bro , I hear you on being held back. But could it be that you are being held back on acceleration because the chassis, suspension, and brakes can’t handle the level of acceleration you want? I’m sure VW can do a 500 hp EV but then it would have to have thousands more in parts to support the performance and then would be priced out of its segment. Just thinking realistically 😊

Things I hate about this car: the lack of “enthusiast performance”. I agree with you. Offer up a performance “R” version. I would be sold on that! The piano black plastic HAS to go! Not a fan of the touch controls. I prefer the actual buttons like some of the current VW’s have. I still like old fashioned rotary/button heat and A/C controls. Much easier to adjust while driving. Needs heated seats in rear. Needs a sunroof that actually OPENS. Needs the premium sound system as an option. I would prefer the screen to be more integrated into the dash instead of that “iPad glued to the top of the dash” look. So many are doing that now. Yuk. And that delay in the power train… Ugh! VW needs to rectify that for sure. Otherwise I really like this car. Hopefully in 3 1/2 years when my current lease is up some of these issues will be addressed. Good review…as usual!

This is a very appealing EV, but I agree that Volkswagen needs to consider either tuning it to give it more of a sports car 0-60 4-sec range feel. I am considering buying one in 2022 but will wait and see about what VW does with its performance. The price is certainly appealing for what it is when figuring the $7500 tax credit and 3 years of free charging.
