Doug, I've been watching your unbiased opinion for years now and simply love your car reviews. Lately I've watched your reviews of the oncoming electric cars (Mach E and ID.4). One thing that is missing in your reviews of EV's is the charging capability of each vehicle. I think it is an important factor in the decision making of an EV. Keep up the good work 💪.

Doug's review is very unbiased. However, just like Doug said on one of his clip, he gives higher score to sports cars. So his reviews are very good but his scoring is a bit biased.

Infotainment systems were always 10 years behind in VWs. For example bluetooth was starting to be pretty common in cars and for vw to have it as standard you had to wait circa 5 to 10 years longer + the first headunits that got it were unreasonably expensive. Hope they will have a better hw and sw team dedicated to this and it changes for the better. Its unacceptable for this time we live in.

Over here in Germany, they are not delivering the ID.4 to the customers, yet, even thoug production is running continuously. The cars will be delivered at the end of March, when software revision 2.1 is released. This will allow OTA updates, which all currently available test cars don't have. I am sure that especially on software level this car will see a lot of improvement over the next years.

I drove the ID.4 yesterday and it felt heavy to me. The cruise control did a good job of keeping its adaptive distance and braking. So it seemed, the advance driver assist did a better job driving than I could. I wasn’t use to any of the controls or features, so I hope, in time that will change. Or I’m just getting older and will soon find myself depending on self driving cars. 🤨

Provided it remembers your settings you don't need to go near the screen for most things, though the heated seat and driver assistance controls are a complete dumpster fire as you might need to use them while driving. All the other commonly used controls like window defrost, wipers and lights have their own buttons for the driver. Apart from the windshield defrost I almost never touch the climate controls. The volume control on the steering wheel does look like a pain though - the little rollers on previous model cars are a much nicer interface as you know when you're giving an input without having to look for feedback.

I see real cars have finally caught up with future cars, specifically as envisioned by exhausted, overworked science-fiction movie production designers from 1992 who figured that they could get away with “excruciatingly minimalistic” as a prevailing design aesthetic in order to stay on schedule and budget.
@tomi832
@tomi832 3 жыл бұрын
or maybe because, you know, minimalistic is better and its easier that way - especially after you get used to it. almost all Tesla owners will tell you that other cars are hard for them because they are messy with too many buttons. I get the windshield wipers and controlling the direction of the climate control is a bit hard right now before there's "real" FSD, but when they would finally have it - it would be better to have it on the screen rather than "normal" style. though I really don't get people who are mad about controlling the wheel's position or the side-mirrors through the screen. I don't think that anyone found themselves needing to adjust the steering wheel while going 90 MPH on the highway, right? you would do it before you drive - so why the unnecessary button? same for side mirrors.
@Reddsoldier
@Reddsoldier 3 жыл бұрын
I still don't get what meeting they decided that these weird touch things were better than buttons in an automotive setting. You can easily operate buttons by touch and you can tell if you've pressed them etc without having to look like these pads and any other pads in any other cars make you do for example. Also, how can no automaker actually integrate a reasonable sized screen into their interior design yet? It's been 8 years since we started getting these things in cars and they still can't figure it out. They look awful in their "placed on as an afterthought" position.

It's pure a cost cutting exercise, especialy for VW. This car must deliver for a price point and still be possible to be built in Germany. The rest are the hard plastics (which Doug didn't mention?) and the rather low horsepower. But it's a VW so it should sell well, especially in Europe where the taxes are better for electric vehicles. Don't forget it is a very heavy vehicle, so the rest is expensive as well.
@Reddsoldier
@Reddsoldier 3 жыл бұрын
@@JJVernig VW have always had decent switchgear, and I really can't see how traditional push buttons would cost that much more, especially given the longevity, ease of use and safety aspects that they have a clear advantage with. I suspect they haven't included them because it's the "in" gimmick to remove buttons to seem "high tech" because functional tech is apparently not a priority over barely usable tech which looks nice. Sure, in 10 years I might be proven wrong and wonder how we ever did without them, but as it stands, I just don't think it's the best idea to be filling cars with tech that requires drivers to look away from the road, even if there is lane keep assist and radar cruise control because here in the UK at least those things don't mean dick in the vast majority of driving we do on poorly marked and twisty roads outside of the big towns and cities. And I assume the whole point of an electric car with much better range is that it is targeted at people who don't live in cities or big towns because that's where the people who will have range woes live.
