Sometimes I do one handed driving (reversing etc while on the radio) and I won't be able to do that in the tahoe. In todays Tahoe with the 10 speed, I was very surprised at how quick the 5.3 is… I just sold my 2017 Durango R/T with the 5.7 Hemi and I gotta say for the size tires and the bigger/taller body of the Z71 Tahoe… it’s plenty fast enough and I bet it’s about even with the Durango as far as speed… I don’t see an issue towing anything upto it’s 7k or so towing capacity. Definitely better than any of the older pickup trucks people use to drive around…. And they seemed to do fine, and were way slower

New shifter is a learning curve but you get used to it fairly quickly. 6.2 is powerful but remember 93 a octane knocking on the doorstep of $5.00/gallon I am glad I stuck with the 5.3. Nice new design, modern but not overbearing. For those coming out of previous generation Escalade/Tahoe/Yukon they added approximately seven inches to overall length…….keep in mind for garages. I about fill the spot. I have just enough room to get around either front with garage door closed or around the rear with garage door open. Usually not both. For low ceilings or low parking garages….take advantage of the two position lift gate height. I set mine to 3/4 open and manually raise the rest of the way. Z71 is Offroad oriented but some luxury items. Pros: Design, blacked out accents looks stylish and aggressive especially with the Midnight Blue exterior. Premier and High Country are luxury oriented but not as mean and aggressive….way too much Chromey. Most luxury items that are found on the Premier and HC are available…2nd row buckets, heated seats and wheel, sliding center console power fold third row seating……note 2nd row seating is power folding but needs to be raised manually. 2nd row buckets are adjustable for not only recline but can slide a few inches forward/Aft… forward for 3rd row entry and back for more legroom. Infotainment screen looks aftermarket like a….oops we forgot to put a display screen. Build the console around the screen not the screen around the dashboard. Cons: Not all Premier and HC items are available…..HUD, Adaptive Cruise, ventilated seats etc… Center console organizer tray not included with purchase…either back order or not available. I found one on GM parts catalog so they do exist, matter of how much your dealer is willing to fight for you. The cargo area security cover can only be installed with the 3rd row seats stowed. No TX edition which is basically 22” rims and the badging. I installed the gloss black powder coating “22” from my 2021 Premier. Wireless Charging….great concept but location of the charging pad is located in a place with high potential for damage either to charging pad, phone or both. Short out, liquid intrusion, etc…I am planning on pulling the fuse for the wireless Charging to avoid damage. Only one USB port. That port is a data only port….usb flash drive etc….all other ports especially charging port s are USBC in and USB-C out. Rear Seat Entertainment is not removable….not even the monitors . I would rather remove and keep in safe keeping until I trade in. No family for me and my dog keep scratching she screen when he swipes left……think about that for a minute you will get it. Overhead Console could use way better background lighting…..sliding center console switch is not only out of way in that switch is upper console but motion is lower. Sliding center console controller is no background lighting. Eventually you find it by feel but make a note. Biggest con of all to me anyway…..No Foglights….you heard me. Great ride, quiet, comfortable and smooth. Major limitation is the fuel capacity and don’t expect much beyond 350-400 miles per tank. Without hypermiling and cruise at normal interstate speeds that’s about 5 hours. Not a vehicle where you want to ignore the ….”Last fuel for XXx miles sign.

Great presentation of the pros and cons of this model and this power train. I actually watched this a second time months later and appreciated your views even more on this. Personally I keep going back and forth on the engine options. The 5.3L is just a no go for me. Im truly trying to understand where your heart is on the GM power plants as I knew from past videos you were one of the biggest fans of the 6.2L. Is that changing? If you were in the market for a family SUV to tow etc. and were not into moderate off roading other than going down some dirt/gravel roads while camping etc., would you buy an RST or Premier instead to get the 3.0L or buy the Z71 for its better looks, adaptive air ride etc and settle for 6.2L?

They don't put the 3.0 Duramax in the Z71 Tahoes and Suburbans due to the front fascia/skid plate design not leaving room or adequate ventilation for an intercooler. I agree, though, that not offering it on the Z71 is a mistake as that would be a desirable combination.

B.S. In 1969 and 1970 Dodge and Plymouth were able to use an engine-driven mechanical fan to cool the HUGELY inefficient 426 and 440 cubic inch engines in the Daytona and Superbird through a tiny slot in the nose cone. Are you trying to tell us that over 50 years later, GM cannot cool an engine only 40% as large as those old big blocks that is 120% more efficient than the old big blocks? You really drank the Kool Aid on that one.
@Otownbassin

@@mikek5298 that emissions equipped turbo diesel is probably powering 40% more inside the vehicle as well.
@berto1014
@berto1014 2 жыл бұрын
@@mikek5298 Then why didn't they put it in? Clearly there is demand for it, and demand = money. The thing about efficiency is that the fuel is burning more completely, meaning more heat is generated. More heat, means you need more cooling. People are largely going to be towing heavy loads with these vehicles at highways speeds, not high speed like the Daytona only with the weight of the vehicle and the driver. That would mean heat is even more of an issue, and you need a bigger radiator/intercooler. It's not drinking the kool aid being nuanced or understanding physics.
@tenscourts
@tenscourts 2 жыл бұрын
Completely agree. The lack of a diesel in the AT4 and Z71 is about the front fascia and the intercooler. It has nothing to do with the weight. When I watch a video like this and here a statement that is so blatantly incorrect it makes me question anything they say.

We have the 22 GMC Yukon SLT version, my biggest disappointment was you could not get adaptive cruise control in the lower trim level SLT. Guess what? a month after we took delivery the luxury package SLT now comes with adaptive cruise. The other issue is the well wheel liners are not plastic, but some type cardboard impregnator with carpet. Make it a pain to get clean if you pick up mud. The other fail is the rear tail lights on the GMC have the mold injection point in the center of the tail light and it looks cheap. Also GMC logo is inside the tail light, but it is not chrome like the Tahoe. Other than the above we love our Yukon. SLT is just the right package. The price for the Denali really jumps the price up.

I think the key to this SUV is comfort and moderate off roading. Very few may buy Z71 and whoever may buy this SUV may not care about the cost of gas. Do y’all complain about the fuel economy of ole Toyota V8s? No. But GM did way more than Toyota did to modernize their engines - at one point the 6.2L V8 was achieving the same highway mpg as the Lincoln Navigator with the Raptor V6 engine. In attempt to mitigate their thirsty 8 cylinders they’ve implemented all types of technology. But of course people like you pushed back! You demand a V8 but don’t like start/stop. You don’t like AFM. Cylinder deactivation. But you’re also the first to complain about inferior fuel economy with the audacity to blame the manufacturer for not putting the customer experience first. It makes absolutely no sense.

I really wanted to like the new Sequoia but the cargo capacity to fit dog kennels in the back absolutely sucks and was a big let down. The hybrid battery is below the 3rd row and it doesn't fold flat and you can't remove it for a flat large cargo area . It's less useful than our smaller 4runner. Great video Nathan, a lot of your negative points are what had been holding me back on one of these, it's just too much money and not enough capability. Love that diesel, now put it in the Z71 or at4. I hate how they segregate the options as well. You can't get the electronic limited slip unless you get the air suspension. And you can't get the 6.2 and the Z71 unless you get the air suspension. Yeah, you can get the RST with the 6.2 but you get no electronic limited slip and you don't get the benefits of the Z71. The jury is still out on the mechanical limited slip that comes in the lower offerings with the non-air suspension. Looking forward to seeing more about the new Sequoia, it just seems tougher and I think we can see it's going to be a lot more capable, I'm just hoping the pricing is within range and less than the Tahoe or Yukon. What sucks about the Sequoia is it's not going to get nowhere near the MPG of that turbo diesel Duramax, which I want bad.

Great video. I agree a diesel would be a great option. Maybe GM will start listening. But that new toyota is gonna be a game changer!!!!

Going back more than a decade, I have numerous conversations with dealerships about a diesel option for Chev SUVs. Then they looked at me, like I was a trouble maker for asking for a diesel option. So I stopped asking. No idea why Chevrolet is so negative on diesel for this vehicle when Duramax is such an excellent engine.

I had a GMC Canyon with a duramax with 15,000 miles on it. It threw a rod through the side of the block in the middle of nowhere in British Columbia. 200 miles away from anything. Took them 45 days to get the engine on a slow boat from Taiwan. I sold the truck as soon as I got it back home. Will never buy another truck with a small Duramax. The Duramax in the Tahoe is only 3 liter. That is too tiny of a motor to make that much torque. Recipe for disaster it you tow anything heavy and actually use that torque. The mechanic at the dealership that repaired it said the small Duramax engines are junk. They fail a lot.

@@wims58ej yes, your one data point and what your mechanic said completely negates all the 3.0 Duramaxes out there with no issues, even in towing use cases. lmao reeeee

The Yukon AT4 is mechanically identical to the Z71. So, how exactly is it more capable? Is it the almost $4,500 price hike over the Z71 that makes it more capable?

I had the 3.0 diesel in a Sierra for a while, put 18k miles on it. Then my neighbors Cummins burned to the ground because of oil build and sludge build up internally. So I took a sensor off the intake and put a fiber camera to find a sludge coated intake…. Sold the Sierra shortly after that with all the horror stories of modern diesels after 100-125k miles, it wasn’t worth it to me. Went to a mid-sized SUV but still want a Tahoe with reasonable mpg, just waiting for one that can last 250k miles.

Jeep Grand Wagoneer Series III is the top off-road vehicle for the large SUV. But I am impressed with the Tahoe. As with any large SUVs, they are priced in the same terrrority.

Way to expensive of a vehicle to ever want to do off-road stuff in, especially when a family of 4 can fit in a lt trail boss for like $10-15,000 less.

I think every reviewer I have watched gets it wrong. Nathan you seem like a person who is very difficult to make happy. There is nothing wrong with the 5.3 it produces plenty of power and torque to move the cottage on wheels. It also runs on regular octane. After owning all of the previous generations on Tahoes this is by far the best ideration. I LOVE the fact that the big ugly shit lever is no longer there. It seemed so out of place on such a great dashboard layout. It really helps the drive feel extra space. Every time I move my right hand towards the wheel or the touch screen I notice that its not there. The infotainment is far better than anything before. Now I know you are comparing this to the other trucks, but come on man. A Ford? Also, your test vehicle is also missing the tubular running boards that come with the Z71. (this would be a legit off road complaint).

Not sure about discounting the price, the new Sequoia and Expedition will both be more expensive, the Yukon is slightly more expensive, Nissan is going to be the only truck based full size SUV that is cheaper, he turbos might be worth it to some for torque and possibly MPG but as crazy as 65K US sounds it is par for the course now

As good as the independent rear suspension is for ride quality and comfort, it severely reduces ground clearance by the rear axle.
@levthelion

Dafuk? Ground clearance is higher with IRS. You cant do much about the a rear solid axle height other than get bigger tires. Theres a reason Raptors are priced the way they are.
