The 2022 Conlanger's Census is HERE!

After the very successful 2021 "Conlang Census," Big Lang is back at it again with a new and improved sequel, now called the "Conlanger's Census!" Or "Conlanger Census," whatever vibes better with you. The form is a set of demographics questions and a set of questions related to the creative process of conlanging, along with some questions about worldbuilding and conscripts.
It should only take about 5-10 minutes to complete. If you know a place on the internet that was not represented last year, please share the link to that place so we can get as diverse of a response as possible!
Responses will be accepted throughout December and into early January.

First time I've gotten to take the census :). Last year I didn't even know what a conlang is and now I've tried making about 5 (none of which I'm happy with though I'm still working on 2) and I've learned toki pona and sitelen pona (which I've started writing my journal in since I've moved to America and most people can speak English lol). So happy to be part of this community!

I think it was a tom scot video called “the sounds that humans can’t make” or something like that, I found it really interesting, eventually I discovered artifexian, than at some point biblaridarian and jan misali/conlang critic, and it was all downhill from there lol

I just took the Census, however I have a suggestion that I did not think about until after I was done. It pertains to proto-languages. My suggestion is including a question in the next census: Do you start working on a proto-language before proceeding to a language, or vice versa? In my case, of course, I tend to work backwards from a natural language to a proto-language.

Thank you for doing this annually! I, like many, am a sucker for a nice pie chart haha, and it's always very interesting to learn about the demographic data (and how proportions may differ from the general population) and the conlanging habits of this wonderful community. One new question this year that I'm quite interested about is the question on neurodivergence, since it does appear to perhaps be at a higher density in this community, and it would be interesting to see whether that's concretely the case and by how much. (PS: love the little last question on saying "thank you!" in a conlang of your design, adds a cute little personal touch to every entry!)

hey i have one suggestion: you could have the sexuality question be so that you can pick multiple choices (like with square boxes) because some people might have different sexual and romantic attractions

This is actually a super good idea! This might be something for next year cuz it would be a pretty big restructure of the question, like have checkboxes for a scale of asexuality, demisexuality, etc and then another for heteroromantic, panromantic, etc. But I will see what we can do.👍

@@AgmaSchwa it would certainly be nice to have options like that but if it's too much of a pain, just categories of 'ace-spec' and 'aro-spec' would be nice and pretty well encompassing. there's a lot of possible microlabels to contend with lol

I couldn't see Turkic on the list of language families to have taken inspiration from. Checked the other primary families box in its absence. But an fyi that probably will be used by a lot of people to sub for Turkic, or Altaic, or any grouping that speculatively includes non Sino-Tibetan languages of East Asia.
