I've been toying with the idea of a silence language, as in, defined not by the noises but the silences in between the noises, which I could see work as an universal language on a planet with many sentient species which might have way different ways of communication but a great sense of timing, so like 20 spacings, and each phrase starting with one full gap to accommodate "speech" speed, so a fast species could communicate at like 20 clicks a second, and a slow one at 1 per second. it could also start as a cant to say something while saying something else. technically it'd qualify as both the fewest sounds (since it could be done in sign/touch/whatever, and even if you count only vocalized, you have 1 or 2 depending if you count silence as a sound) and the most sounds, as you can use literally any sound as spacing. it would also be interesting as they would basically hear length kinda like we hear pitch.
