The all-new Kia EV6 is the first purpose-built electric car from the brand. Sharing its E-GMP platform with Hyundai Ioniq 5 (but little else), the EV6 is available with two battery sizes in rear and all-wheel drive. The “Opposites Unite” design language turns heads, the cabin has unique styling featuring recycled materials and in moderate temperatures, it should easily hit it’s 309-mile range. And when the GT-Line’s 77.4kWh pack is spent, it charges from 10 to 80 percent in 18 minutes using 350kW commercial fast chargers. Tom Voelk checks out a well equipped GT-Line rear wheel drive and finds it fun to drive and ready to take on Ford Mustang Mach-E, Polestar 2, Volkswagen ID.4, Volvo XC40 and C30 Recharge and Tesla Model Y and 3.

7 seconds IS fairly quick for the average car. Though I think EVs have another advantage in that you get power right off the line, so it's gonna feel quicker than a gas car with the same 0-60.

That is very true. I own a Tesla Model S but rented a Toyota Prius Prime recently on a trip. The Prius in EV mode feels plenty fast and even squealed the tires. It got me thinking that 0-60 is really not useful for around town driving. I would like to see more 0-30 comparisons with ICE vehicles of the same class.

This is because most reasonable people need to accelerate fast up to low speeds whole in traffic and not all the way to 60. Maximum torque at zero speed is what most EVs can give.

EV6 is so sharp looking! Bummer it doesn't have a full glass roof because it's super dark in the cabin with those small windows. 4.5 seconds to 60mph in the AWD is crazy quick and will even beat a Tesla Model Y off the line.

GT-Line GT are sold out in CA and literally disappear within hours of inventory allotment so I had to "make do" with the Wind AWD but it's still a wonderful car lacking only a sunroof and 20" wheels. Perfect daily driver with 274 mile range for suburban commute but its 4.5 0-60 does not feel as fast as my C40 (also rate at 4.5) and feels closer to 5 - still very good. I am getting getting real world ranges consistent with the 274 EPA range but keeping it charged between 15% and 85% means real world 200 miles of usable range but I always drive in "sport mode" so I'm getting closer to 180 miles. What it beats Tesla and Porsche, with a real "fast charger" I've personally seen it give me over 100 miles of range (from 20%) in under 10 minutes - this is a game changer. And getting ventilated seats for under $55K is pretty great. The Meridian audio system is AMAZING and impressive, well balanced, and obviously needs a real subwoofer. One pedal driving is more aggressive (what I prefer) in "Sport Mode" and is most similar to the C40 which I believe is class leading.

Fr, I love that idea. It frees up the clutter. My car has dual zone auto climate control and I love it because I don’t have to think about it. I just get in it and go unless there was a drastic change in temperature, then I’ll change it, but that’s only 10 seconds of my time in the car doing that. If you know how to use it, then the radio controls are what it’ll be set on most of the time and even then most of the stuff is done on the steering wheel.

@@jraheemjefcoat429 Not an ageism issue. It's basic ergonomics. Never make something a two-step operation when it can be one step, especially controls that are used often. Talk to an engineer and they'll tell you that the volume knob is one of the top used controls, right after the transmission selector, HVAC controls and turn signals (for some drivers anyways).

You can set either of the menus as default and then it toggles back after a few seconds if you change to the other screen. I prefer the infotainment (volume) setting as standard. This is an awesome car. I had a chance to check out the EV6 when I brought my Soul in for routine maintenance. The biggest problem I have with the EV6 is the price. At $56k, the EV6 is $20k more than my 2021 Soul EX. Just came back from a trip up north in Wisconsin and averaged 35 mpg. Living in an apartment and having to park on the street also poses a problem with having an electric vehicle. A hybrid would be more practical. Other than that, KIA did a wonderful job on the EV6.

Bought my First Edition on June 27th. Absolutely love it! Each day I drive it, I continue to smile. I have bumped heated seat/wheel controls a few times when using touchscreen. Also, the piano black trim is pretty, but very prone to fingerprints. I’m just taking a trip to the Wisconsin Dells from Kalamazoo & the charging is very easy. Only needed 2 full charges at about 1 hour, allowed me to arrive in the Dells with approximately 190 miles left. Gets plenty of looks, especially since it’s Urban Yellow. Great review, & looking forward to many years of happy motoring.

Great review tom, one of the better ones i've seen on the EV6, very informative and entertaining.I'm not sure whether you were aware of it but you can actually swap out the volume and Tone controls in the audio settings, so that the volume goes to the right for your good lady and the tone goes to the left, that may make life a bit easier for you both as you have your volume on the wheel and she has it within easy reach, as long as she doesn't need to adjust the tone everyones happy. I don't know where that setting is exactly as we are still awaiting delivery of our's but have definitely seen that functionality in another review, all the best bud, hope you enjoy ownership for many years to come

Hi Tom, first of all thanks for your great review. I’m allmost an “expert” 😉 regarding watching EV6 reviews. I ordered the GT-line AWD and I’m waiting and waiting for it to be delivered. I noticed something very weird regarding the frunk of the RWD you reviewed. Normally (allways) RWD versions of the EV6 have a much larger frunk. I suspect KIA has build in the wrong (small) frunk in your test car. That could explain the space you noticed below the frunk. Cheers!

Nice job as usual Tom. Since you've driven both, I'm curious to your thoughts on the ride compared to the Mach-E? We love our Mach-E (ER RWD), but definitely notice the infamous "bouncy" ride once in a while. It's not a problem so far, but we haven't taken any long trips in it yet. This EV6 is the first car to come along where I've thought "maybe I got the wrong EV"...

The Kia does have a more settled ride on undulating pavement and there are the differences in design inside and out. The wrong EV? Don't beat yourself up. As always, great review! Great car. On my list for next year. Hopefully, the car production issues will be lessened by then. As for the gripes, e.g., no wireless CarPlay, in every car where I’ve had wireless CarPlay, two issues: 1. Drains your battery FAST, so the wireless Qi charger had better be strong, and 2. The tech isn’t quite there yet, lots of drops, no connection issues, etc…I’d prefer to just plug it in and cure two problems with one plug (charge faster and connection security). As for door handles, from watching many reviews by actual car designers from the industry, car door handles are a huge source of noise (along with side view mirrors and tires). So, making them flat to the side takes away that noise. Until the US changes the laws, we’re stuck with the large side view mirrors (unlike Europe where they can use the camera cameras), and tires…until that tech changes, they will always be noisy…Lastly, agree with you on a heated steering wheel. Should be standard. And, YES, you’d think KIA learned from Honda’s no volume knob debacle! PUT IN A DEDICATED KNOB!!!

What a lot of people don't understand is that if you push and hold the arrow up for 4 seconds it will give you a choice of which one you want to default to. So when you push the change button (arrow or fan) it will go to that and then return by itself after a few seconds to the one that you programmed default to. Makes it much more manageable. I've never seen any reviewer mention that.

My story about finding a new vehicle to replace my VW Alltrack that I had sold last July is a long one. Basically, I had a deposit on a new Hyundai Tucson PHEV Limited trim since June, 2021, and a deposit on a VW ID.4 Pro S AWD since Sept, 2021. I lucked into finding an inbound EV6 GT-Line AWD at a local dealership on the 12th of Feb, and then I was one of the first people in the State of Colorado to actually purchase one when it ended up being delivered a week earlier than anticipated. I've had it since Feb 26th and am EXTREMELY (and I mean extremely) happy with it. For once in my life, my timing was perfect. While I am a fan of EVs, I completely agree with Tom's assessment concerning their widespread adoption in the US. It will be quite a bit longer than many analysts think before most new cars sold are PHEV or pure EVs. As for me, it would be very difficult to buy another gas only (non hybrid/PHEV) car in the future, especially with the surge in gas prices due to the invasion of Ukraine by Russia. I will likely replace my Wife's aging Acura RDX with a PHEV - maybe even that Tucson PHEV that I still have a deposit on (I cancelled the ID.4). While I'd love to do that, the main problem is two new car payments are not exactly in my near term financial plans. As for it's expected delivery, ironically enough I received an update on it 4 days after purchasing the EV6 - mid to late April. We'll see what actually happens. PS: I can confirm the 0 to 60 run in the GT-Line AWD as being sub 5 seconds. This is is fast when you want it to be.

The car is outstanding, Kia did incredibly well and this genuinely moves EV's forward. That said, these have been available for a few months in UK now (already doing a small update apparently) but the waiting list is 1 year which makes it a car that isn't really available in my mind. EV's are now the only vehicles anybody is really interested in here, when a car maker brings something out that is popular the demand seems crazy. Maybe you guys will have better luck with supply, especially since you drive on the wrong side of road which will make the pool of potential cars ready larger

Another superb review, Tom. I'm torn between the EV6 and the GV60 and will need to make a decision when the supply chain and chip shortages end (in 2023?). I suspect there are others who are also torn. Would you consider a comparison video, preferably focusing on the relative values for money?

I don't have the resources to do comparisons the right way. My suggestion would be to watch each of my videos to get an idea of what the cars are like. I'll touch on the differences between the EV6 and Ioniq5 when the Hyundai video drops in a couple weeks, and I'll like mention those two when I do the GV60. But I like to treat them like separate vehicles (because they feel very different from each other).

Seems like $10k is the default KIA/Hyundai markup. So, as the buyer, stay in control. I've got a Wind AWD w/ Tech Package in the Garage. it's basically the GT-Line minus the moon-roof and mood lighting. Also.. 19" instead of 20" wheels.. but the smaller wheels seem to provide better range (not what I'd have expected). It really is a beautiful car, and it's shockingly fast too. I live on a wide 25mph street.. and one block away from my house it's a school on one side and a golf course on the other,.. so it's easy to creep up to 30mph in my Pirus. I punched it around a corner earlier today for just a few seconds (it's soo fun) and before I knew it, the radar sign on that block was flashing more than I've ever seen.. It was warning I was up to 45mph. It rides as smooth as my old 2008 Infinity M35x, but it's about 1sec faster 0-60. I paid too much for it, but it was the color and spec I wanted and it was time to buy a car now so I couldn't wait for supply to increase. It is an amazing car though, and I got more than I should have selling an old Hyundai (supply chain.. ) so it sort of worked out in the end. Loads of Tech.. I thought the Infotainment Quick Ref guide must be in 10 languages because it's got to be 100-150 pages thick.. but it's just English. The interior was more luxurious in my Infinity but everything in the EV6 interior is made from recycled materials.. so the Vegan Leather seats aren't quite as plush as the leather seats in my M35x.. but it's still a fantastic car. One thing that surprised me though. It shipped with the VTL (Vehicle to Load) adapter that lets you run 120V out of the car. It doesn't ship with a L1 120V charging cable though. I just ordered a L1/L2 portable charger cable from Amazon for $200 but I thought I'd get at least a L1 charger cable with the car. And.. heated steering wheels are the most amazing thing ever invented. :-) I'm in love.

Oh yea.. I could have swore Kia was offering at least 6 months of access to Electrify America.. similar to VW's deal. Now that I've got the car and trying to figure out how to get my EA code.. I found out they're offering 1000KW hours.. not Unlimited (or unlimited 30-min sessions) for 6-12 months. Oh well. still free charging for a while, and we don't drive so much that I can't get by most of the time with at-home L1 or L2 charging. Oh well. by my calculations it's goint to cost me ~$10 to fully charge it at home and it'd cost me about $90 right now to fill a similar-sized SUV. (w/ a 20 Gal tank). so.. I can afford less free time on Eliectrify America chargers. :-)

@@ffakr I believe you have 3 years to use the EA power. And yeah, I pointed the lack of charge cord, didn't make it clear the V2L adapter is standard. Kind of think it would have been better the other way around. And the "leather" will age really well, even if it isn't as plush. Congrats.

That’s most dealers from any brand at this point but the good thing is, you as a consumer do have choice not to buy from them and there are dealers who don’t markup and will ship the car to you or you could pick it up yourself. The only brand not doing this is Tesla but even then I don’t think the general public who applaud them for it realize that they’ve raised prices a few times (more than model year changes) since the chip shortage started so it’s a choose your battle situation in this market.

I really like how Kia has the climate/ audio controls set up. I think it’s pretty slick. It’s sort of Kia’s own version of how Jaguar/Land Rover does their multi-purpose knobs in their vehicles. However, Tom I think this is how Kia is designing their interiors now. Look at interior photos of the 2023 Sportage. It has the exact same interior layout as the EV6.

JLR multifunction knobs make sense. Heater and heated seats controls in one, they do a similar thing. Volume knob and climate knob? Not so much. And just because Sportage will have it, doesn't make it a good design.
