Kia nailed it with the 2022 EV6 electric vehicle. The GT-Line model is stylish inside and out, plus the rear-wheel drive version has an EPA estimated range of 309 miles. That calls for a road trip from Seattle, WA to Portland, OR to examine that claim. It’s a fairly tough test, EVs don’t like cold temperatures (it was in the mid 30s) and are less efficient at highway speeds (which was 95% of the travel). Tom Voelk checks it out and looks at high-speed 350kW charging station with its sister, the Hyundai Ioniq5. The cars are brilliant. It’s the infrastructure and people blocking the charging stations that are the issue. And, the elusive Mariko makes an appearance.

Excellent video as always! For anyone new to EVs we typically charge our Tesla Model 3 overnight using the regular wall outlet in the garage. That gives us 60 miles range a day x 350 days a year is over 20,000 miles. Supplement with the super quick and easy and affordable Tesla Supercharger network. It’s as easy as charging your phone! 😊

It’s hard to believe the Kia EV6 and Hyundai Ionic 5 are essentially the same vehicle. They look so different from each other and I think that’s really cool,especially these days, everything is starting to look alike.

The thing about people just parked in the ev spot is never going to stop especially in the US where we have the most selfish drivers on the road. More than once I’ve gone to a station and Ev is just parked there not even plugged in and I only have a few miles left it makes you wanna throw a brick through their windshield.

Excellent review, Tom. It's good to see a local Northwest test and it confirms my biggest worry when considering an EV . . . the charger outlets in the region you are traveling through on a trip will certainly have to be researched prior to the trip, and allowances for bad equipment should be considered. It's sad. I love the idea of an full EV, but I can't even imagine buying anything but a PHEV for myself . . . I love the safety net and a decent 30+ mile range for the battery would complete most of my trips around town. . . . and thank the misses again for being a good sport.

I love your great reviews, and this one included. Plus any review with Mariko in it is an extra bonus. I enjoy my ID4, am doing a 150 mile tou trip trip saturday, and it’s true, you both need to plan in advance, and also backup plan in advance ie pick where you will charge, and have a plan b in case you can’t charge there. If we could buy a 2nd car now, and there weren’t the dealer markups, I’d probably get an Iooniq 5. Given the reality of mark ups now and for the foreseeable future, i think you should mention them, especially for EVs

I think you nailed the issue right on the head. Yes, there is the fear of range anxiety which should be eliminated as more and more charging stations are deployed. The BIG PROBLEM is that the existing infrastructure (if it's not Tesla's) is hit-and-miss when it comes to being functional. I can't count how many EV review videos I've seen where the reviewer comments on the chargers in their area being out of order or having a line up to use them.

We recently committed to the installation of a 10.5K solar array at our house (in the permitting phase right now) and our next step, purchase of an EV, is just a few weeks out. The rapid rise in cost of the Tesla Y ($63K) knocked it off my short list. We have a good dealer group here in southeast Virginia that handles Kia, Hyundai and BMW franchises. No markups, no required options or accessories, no pressure whatsoever.....a very pleasant surprise. If I go the BMW route, I can order an i4 exactly as I want and will have to wait till Fall to get it. Over at the Kia and Hyundai franchises, I was told I really can't spec a specific model. They will take my "preferences" and, as the monthly allotment shows up (about 10 cars at the current rate), I have the option of choosing the one closest to my preferences. The BMW i4 comes in around $53K including the federal tax incentive and because of the expected quality of the driving experience (not to mention me being a picky buyer), that's my #1 choice right now. But I do like the Kia/Hyundai twins.....I think of them as my "value" option. Thanks for the excellent review. Any chance you can get behind the wheel of an BMW i4 soon?

They should skip that and instead offer electrical utilities direct rebates per charger installed per residence. Apparently some utilities in some states have already realised they can make back the initial capex in just 2-3 year's. So they are offering free ev chargers. Makes to much sense, partner with a charging station co making modern connected chargers to control the demand peaks. Most evs only need 1-3hrs of actual charging per day based on the current daily use mileage trends. Buy thousands of them at a much ceaper price vs retail, get those government rebates for the installs. And enjoy the $ coming in from decades of ev home charging demand. 👍🏻🤔

We don’t make that many road trips a year beyond the 250 mile range. Home charging only takes a minute to plug and unplug. I have scoped out the charging infrastructure along all of our potential travel routes. Some are pretty sparse when comes to DC fast charging. Lots of Level 2 options (many free) which work if you’re going to hanging around for a few hours hiking, skiing etc. Often you only need to add 25-30 miles of additional range to easily make it home or to the next DC fast chargers. At my age I like the road breaks anyway.

I went home and started doing research on EV's and just general pro's and con's. The con's outweighed the pro's for me and the kind of driving I do. My big cons were range anxiety, GOOD WORKING chargers, charging time and charging spaces taken up by inconsiderate people parking. All those issues you mentioned with the charging infrastructure make EV ownership completely out of the question for me. I'm 66 years old, and experience enough frustration with new technology and having to re-learn things I've known for decades, and my car is one reliable refuge from all that. If I have to cross all my fingers and toes, say ten Hail Mary's, and hope the Bluetooth connection between the app on my phone, my car and/or the charging station is going to work, and THEN have to wait 45 minutes to juice up enough to go 200 more miles, it ain't gonna happen. When charging is as ubiquitous, fast and reliable - and under a covered area to keep me dry while I'm charging - then I'll consider one. But not before. I've never been an early adopter.

On roadtrips the Electrify America stations have worked flawlessly with the Mach-E. However, that is with the Ford payment system where you just plug in and the charging network recognizes the car and starts charging. Basically the same as what you find with Tesla supercharging. Given how many people have issues with Electrify America even when using the app, my conclusion is that the issues are with the payment system (though my understanding is that you have fewer problems if you set up charging on the app before plugging in though the directions from EA say to plug in first). Hopefully more manufacturers will set up this system with all the charging networks, and hopefully Tesla won't have a ton of issues when opening its network if it does (my guess is that will happen when the Supercharger network is no longer a competitive advantage).

@doncooper2344
@doncooper2344 2 жыл бұрын
@@DrivenCarReviews Yes consistency is key. I'm not saying EA is consistently without issues. My point is that the fewer steps needed at the charger the fewer problems there will be. Home charging is very reliable and also very simple. You plug in. There is negotiation between the EVSE and the charger about power and charging starts. Very few things can go wrong. Things are only slightly more complicated at a Tesla supercharger or EA charger with Ford Connect charging. The only additional step is the charging network has to identify the car and verify it's eligible for charging. Things get way more complicated when you add apps and credit cards. Now the system has to verify the app, the account associated with the app, the charging station, and the credit card. The credit card itself can be an issue. I've had gas transactions declined because the fraud system at the CC company decided that buying gas at a station I often buy gas at is potentially fraudulent. If that happens with an EA account or credit card all you'll know is that the charger times out or refused to start charging.

I have a Tesla Model 3 and the real world range on the Tesla is at least 10% less than what Tesla claims. Personally, it Hasn’t been an issue since I took only 1 road trip and the other 3K mikes I’ve put are all in and round the city. And I am never going to get another ICE I think.

What happens when you get got in a traffic jam? Also, if everyone has an EV then the charging stations will need to be at least 6 times larger to accommodate all the vehicles. A gas station takes 5 minutes to fuel a vehicle. Fast charge takes at least 6 times longer needing 6 times the space. These green vehicles need to get electricity from somewhere and the last time I checked places like California already have rolling brownouts.

I like the EV6 more than the Ioniq 5, just a styling choice, but the GV60 is intriguing as well. The EV infrastructure is a worry, space hoggers, units not working, and just lack of stations are going to slow down the switch......but families with one EV for daily use and one gas car for long trips I think will be the ways things go for a bit.

People leaving their PHEVs in hotel charging spots has been a real problem for us when road tripping in our BEV. People figure they'll save $5 in gas and get to park up front and don't seem to care they're hurting those without an engine. The problem will continue until hotels start charging for them.

In my experience of owning the Kia EV6 GT Line for a hot minute this is not a road tripper. I started with 311 miles of full charge and I barely made it to my destination 196 miles away. It might get that 311miles in the city (but who drives 311miles in the city?) but it won't get it on the highway. My other complaint is the seat. I have a bad back so this is a bit subjective but my back was killing me after my 200 mile journey. I hopped in my Prius later in the day and everything felt different (better). The Kia EV6's seat is hard and lumbar support is poor. Not ready for the big stage in my opinion.

@@DrivenCarReviews You know I have not looked to see if Issaquah is 350, our E-Tron charges at 150 kW so that is what I look for. @@eddieyutub About the same as a 3 series for sure. But when you start looking at overall costs the math makes sense. I just went and built a 330e xdrive. It was $50,475. It is about as loaded as the wind version of the EV6 with the tech package which is $52.400. After the tax credit this is pretty much $45k. The EV6 is quicker has HDA2 which is better. It would likely save $1500 a year vs the ICE 3 series on fuel. It would be more reliable. BMW has the highest maintenance costs of any brand. The EV6 really looks like an easy choice.

@@DrivenCarReviews - Well it depends.. on some lots here the companies are ruthless with over "time", failure to display parking pass.. it's like $100 or more in fines, compared to $30 on the street with the local city bylaws.. Also I've seen some private chargers charge like $1 or so per hour for the first 2 hours, then something like $5 / hr. All they need to do is raise it to $10 and then the 2 hr limit is sort of enforced. Best part, not ticket needed since the credit card info is already on file!!
@DrivenCarReviews
@DrivenCarReviews 2 жыл бұрын
@@toxicslix Yes, the overtime charges are the best way to motivate people to get their cars out of the slots so other can use them. And I'd love to see private lots charge for ICE vehicles or non-charging EVs charging slots. It's harder for parking lots like grocery stores, Target and Walmart since they don't want to piss off customers. That's where the overtime fee is good.

I think the magic number is 500+ mile range with 80% recharge in 15 minutes. My Honda accord can do over 600 miles on the highway. It appears we are on generation away from that number. The lucid air can do it now, just need one at a price a normal person can afford.

Why would they ever need that much range though? The average us commuter does under 40 total miles. Last year according to data gathered over half of all vehicle's went under 10 miles one way daily. Nobody is driving 10hrs at hwy speeds outside of commercial use paid long haul drivers. And even they have rules and logbook entries to file on how long they are behind the wheel each day. 🤔

That's the classic American solution. Buy for 1% needs. I'm perfectly fine with 300 miles. In fact, in most cases 240 would never leave me stranded, and that's when traveling from Seattle to Vancouver or Portland. And for super long travel, rent a car. You could do that dozens of times for the extra cost of that large battery. Know your needs I guess.
