I suspect that he must have spent some serious time with French orienteers (who are among the best in the world) in order to be able to his navigation so well, particularly being able to decide on that last loop that, "Yes, I am definitely in the right spot, so the book must have been stolen!" and go on full speed without letting the worry affect him.

He was defenitly right about the stories they would be telling for years. That hiker picking up the book was crazy. Why not just let it sit there for atleast an extra day? Amazing job. Setting an alarm in the middle of the night to refresh twitter frantically to see whether there would be any finishers, with a specific interest for Karel, was one of the tensest and most inspiring moments in sports so far this year. We got the occasional glimpses through Steven (crewing for Thomas, the other Belgian) but this finally gives a detailed account of what transpired in that moment. Thanks for capturing it, and immensely grateful for the Barkley as a continuing source of inspiration.

Joe did the Appalachian Trail unsupported though. That is vastly different from doing it supported. Those two categories cannot be compared as they are vastly different. Joe still holds the FKT record for hiking the AT without any aid (which means he must carry all his own supplies and cannot even hitch a ride into town). Having personally met Stringbean out on the AT, I have a whole lot of respect for that guy! :)

thanks for this fantastic footage of this past year's barkley! I remember following keith's twitter throughout the event waiting on baited breath to hear about karel's finish! truly amazing set of runners this year. Fingers crossed for Joe for an upcoming year. By the way- GREAT choice of music in the background. A lesser known composer who does some really phenomenal work, and really added to the footage you had.

Awesome film, love watching Joe. He'll get his five loops soon. Also, is that Barkley finisher John Fegyveresi crewing John Kelly?

As a thru hiker - joe is legendary. Has some of the most mind-blowing fkts of all time - usually unsupported. The man beat the Appalachian trail supported record while unsupported - in my opinion the greatest feat ever accomplished on a long trail. Karl did beat his overall record - but karl was supported with a full crew. Joe was a guy with a backpack. insane Joe will get it done one of these years. Even if he doesn't he's still my hero

Joe's AT FKT was wild. And how well he filmed it by himself was equally impressive. But crew or no crew, those PCT/AT Fastest Known Times are all so impressive at this point. Rooting for Karel right now who's back out on the PCT going for it again! Thanks for watching!

@@pilotfield agreed! Don't mean to take anything away from Karl or other fkts - absolutely mind blowing runs and impossible feats Just something about Joe's AT fkt that felt so unreal at the time. Blowing through the supported record by himself. I don't think we will ever see that again on these major trials - especially with how absurdly low these fkts are getting pushed by the field of talented runners

At 28:05 when Laz tells Karel Sabbe he was looking good after loop 4, and Karel replies "Andrew Thompson looked good..." pretty bone chilling reference with the context. In 2005, Andrew Thompson finished loop 4 feeling great and with plenty of time but suddenly and completely lost his mind during his fifth loop. He spent several hours squishing his feet in the mud, thinking he was a garbage man, dumping gallons of water on himself, etc. Laz told AT something to the effect of he "looked like he was in total control" when he left for loop 5. Then it took AT another 4 years to finish Barkley. I can't imagine what Karel felt like setting our for loop 5, wondering if or when his mind would just slip away.
