Honda doesn't appear to have imported Africa Twins into the US for close to 2 years now, so it wasn't really a choice. I think you should have gotten the Norden Expedition instead of the 890R, but I understand they are still very scarce & the KTM's are plentiful, so are being discounted right now.

Honestly I was really hoping for a Kove 450 video. One thing I can say about KTM though is they treated my mom amazingly when my dad passed away unexpectedly (He worked for KTM NA), they continued his pay until she got his life insurance and some other stuff for her that was extremely kind and going a step above and beyond. If they can treat customers even a quarter of the way they did her they'd hands down be the best company in the world customer service wise.

I have been a Guide for about 10 ish years. All sorts of personalities and bikes. What I have learned; All bike brands have breakdowns. We have recovered more broken Yamahas than any other brand. BMW riders pay a shop to work on their bikes Honda riders pay shop to work on their bikes Ducati riders pay a shop to work on their bike Triumph riders pay a shop to work on their bike. KTM most riders work on their own bikes. They ask social media for knowledge. Sure I’ve heard about cam issue however I havent experienced it nor have I spoken to someone face to face who has had the issue. If you have a 790/890 proper oil level is the top of the inner circle. Half way is low. The airbox suck change something, power plate or uni but change it ASAP. Expect every fastener to need locktite apparently KTM ran out about six years ago at manufacturing. Also like cars there’s a bike for everyone. I will never bust on anyone for their choice in bikes. Adv folks are the best people on earth hands down. Peace and keep the rubber side down. Keep in mind this is my personal experiences over a decade of guiding and speaking to hundreds and hundreds of adventure folks. Peace

Good choice on going with the R as you've evaluated the riding you do and what fits best. Plus its clear the 890 AR makes you laugh out loud so its the right decision. You hit the nail on the head at 16:50 as to how the 890 AR differs from the rest of the mid sized market. I don't think the 2023 models are having as many issues as the pervious 7/890s and I hear most of the QA pain points have been addressed so 🤞🏽🤞🏽

Moving to the 2023 890 ADV R from the 2018 1200 GSA was the best decision I've done in a while. I shed close to 150lbs moving to the KTM. The main reason I moved is the low COG that is kept between the two bikes, but the fuel is moved down load where the Boxer engine would be on a GS. That in addition to the less weight makes the KTM a dream off road. It's so confidence inspiring. The buffering case I can validate with my Krios Pro as well. With my Arai XD-4, it's not as bad at 6'1. Ear plugs are definitely required on this bike if you use a Krios Pro helmet. Your setup is very similar to mine: 1) AXP Black Skidplate 2) Vanashce Footpegs and Sprocket Cover 3) KTM Powerparts Clutch and break levers 4) Barkbusters 5) Double Take Mirrors 6) Arrow Decat 7) Wings Exhaust 8) Rottweiler Full Intake 9) Perun luggage rack I'd suggest getting The Goblin for the Reckless luggage system is super easy and convenient for setup and rigidity compared to the stock 2-3 straps near the beavertail. I love mine.

These really seem by far the most robust/crashable ADV bike currently, which I really like. All other models basically require 5KG+ of crashbars around them and it just looks like an afterthought. It's something the other manufacturers should really take a look at. Also the low COG seems really noticeable compared to my T7 when I sat on it at the dealer. I'm just not a fan of the stiff KTM suspension. I actually prefer my softer T7 in that regard, as I don't go that fast. I also prefer to sit a little more "inside" the bike for touring.
@boudix5737
@boudix5737 11 ай бұрын
I agree with you on the crash protection, but I disagree on the complain on the stif suspension on-road. There’s no other way to this, and you can’t have it both. (Unless you trough a ton of money against it and buy the close cartridge stuff from WP). I actually like the fact that you can feel the road, and it is free therapy for you muscles, sinds all those micro vibrations is actually very good for your body. I drove 8000 km on the 890-Adventure-R to Balkan and Greece. And I did not had any issues with the riding comfort on Road and defiantly not Off-Road. Stock saddle and Rally-pegs (with rubber inserts), and a spoiler for longer stretches on country roads.

never have put crash bars on any of my ktm/huskys honestly i dont think its needed , good bark busters and a luggage rack are good enough in my experience , you can , and most riders do i think , change the spring rates on whatever bike you buy to fit you and your size riding style ect that said KTM's stock WP suspension is hands down head and shoulders better than ANYTHING else on the market there is no argument against that sorry

I 'll add my 2 cents. Been riding motorcycles for around 45 years now started out as a kid with dirt bikes. KTM is the best adventure bike for dirt. My problem with KTM is their reliability and customer service. Bottom line is I don't trust them not to break down. Which is a shame because otherwise I would have one. I went with the base model Honda Africa Twin for 14,500 $ you get a lot for your money and a bike that is reliable, takes regular gas and is just easy to live with. Is it as good as KTM 890 in the dirt I'd say no but in every other way I think its better. To me if your main thing is dirt and not much road get a dual sport.

I bought a 2022 890S with 1000 miles on it yesterday. It makes a great street bike. I swear it rails the corners better than the MT07 I have. Seat in the low position feels fine to me with a 30 inch inseam. It rides so much better on poor condition paved roads. Doesn't beat me to death like the MT07. The rider triangle is some much better as well. Cruise control is amazing!! It came with the stock windscreen and a taller one from a 390. I hate both screens as they vibrate my helmet. I am running no screen right now. It also came with a super tall madstad screen that works too good in the heat. When winter comes the Madstad will be nice.

I was really interested in a Norden 901 until I sat on it. The foot pegs are too far back for me at 6'2". Sitting down, my toes were pointing down like riding a crotch rocket. Not my style. Maybe better for shorter riders but the Tuareg or Africa Twin feel much better. The 890 Adv foot pegs are forward more than 901 and it feels completely different and I guess as a dirt biker, it's what I'm used to as with my 690. Sitting on top feels more aggressive and capable, particularly for off-roading. To me, what the 890 needs most is a 2 piece extreme adjustable wind shield that can almost double in height for Highway. An adventure ready version with bells and whistles like the Expedition would be nice to.

This video convinced my my next ADV bike won't be the 890R. At 65, my off roading is more exploratory rather than at a race pace. The decision for me comes down to KTM 890 Adventure (base, not the R) or 660Toureg. By the time I sell my AT, I'll have made up my mind. At this point, I think the Toureg checks more boxes for me but the 890 is pretty cool too. To be honest, I think I'd be happy with either... at least until one of the gremlins pops up. As always, thanks Ian. I really appreciate your approach to testing ADV bikes, really clicks with me.

Those two are my candidates as well! I test rode the Tuareg and found it lacking in torque (I'm used to a dorsoduro 900). That being said, so far it's so reliable and Aprilia has a 4year warranty in my country. The 890 on the other hand has a brilliant engine and would scratch that need for speed but I'm really hesitant cause of the various KTM gremlins i read on the internet... To me the whole term Adventure bike is a misnomer. Not many people have considerable free-time to take long trips away from work, family, or other obligations. If you are travelling on bike any significant distance other than simple day trip then you have at least 50 lbs of gear you are hauling around. That alone brings limits to what might be considered to be fun to ride off-road. Similarly, a smaller less road worthy bike travelling long distances onroad is drudgery not fun and not without risks including rider fatigue, bad weather, and higher risk of accident. An adventure bike makes most sense when you are 60 miles or less from quality off-road riding and you may only be able to afford one bike where you want some quality road riding experience. If it is further than this and you get injured or bike is unrideable due to failure or crash damage then it becomes a major effort for extraction and inconvenience for others. Ian's cracked 890 crankcase story is perfect example as his wife was not too far away to come rescue him. If I lived where Ian does than the KTM 890 is perfect solution in spite of it's questionable reliabilty because trailering short distances is impractical and unnecessary. IMO trailering a true off-road or dual sport bike to where you want to ride if it is longer distances away > 60-90 miles) is a much better solution than any ADV bike. You dont risk damaging very expensive and heavy bike and the off-road experience is much more enjoyable with less bad drama.. I have done the same for touring on Versys 1000 with my wife and that is definitely the ticket

Exactly. I lived where he does for 8 years, its offroad/dual sport paradise there {i enjoy seeing him on the same trails i found...and like he doesnt tell where} And I fell for the whole ADV myth. Bought a new Tiger 800xcx and was driving 40-80 miles to desert or mountain trails. Then riding offroad a few hours exploring. THEN suffering the long ride home after u are tuckered out. I was 35 years old in great shape but absolutely exhausted/tired for a day or two after that. My biggest problem was I wouldnt turn around, tried riding the bike like a giant dirt bike like they are advertised as. A 500lb bike crashed on steep terrain is no joke, IF i wasnt a younger muscle head Id been stranded. Despite the danger of it, it just wasnt fun riding that big a bike on the places i wanted to go. I switched to trucking a lightweight plated dual sport, then went plated enduro and trucking to the desert/mnts was soo much easier and fun cuz I could actually ride how I wanted on a bike meant for it. AND i had a break down, wasnt real hard to get bike to truck without drama or calling anybody. I miss the desert, but dont miss the CA CrAzIEs out there. Upper MI and WI was always home the the woods dual sporting here is fantastic too.

@@tieoneon1614 I'm so with you on that. I currently live in SoCal (planning my escape) and trucking a plated DS is the way to go if you're really into off road. The plate opens up so many areas because of the BS red sticker stuff. The 890 looks tempting but I can definitely see getting into trouble off road, especially since I often ride by myself. My Beta 430 RR-S does everything off-road, is recoverable, and easily does pavement connections. The idea of riding any motorcycle through the LA freeways is not appealing.

The segment needed a name, so they called it Adventure. And if you seeking that the name is OK. To my opinion you don’t need an Adventure bike but a Dual-Sport or Enduro how we call it in Europe. So a big Street legal Off-Road bike. The second reason why you don’t need an Adventure bike is … because you plan you trip, and travel there with a > 30K$ Fan / SUV / or Puck-up, and trough you 10-15K$ on the back. So you already have the truck, witch is quite normal in the US, to have a 2e or 3e car. Or you have to find a excuse to explain to your wife to spend an other 20-30K$ for your hobby. 😂. But in Europe it’s not that common to do that, so we ride on the Tarmac switch to Off-Road constantly, if you are living in UK / NL / B / Germany etc, or you Drive to a country with lots of Off-Road roads like Spain or Portugal, Balkan countries, Greece, Turkey, etc. 3e I mostly do not plan other than a rough direction and explore, or I use the rough direction (still avoiding High-way’s and most of the big boring main roads) to go to a nice area with lots of Off-Road roads. On those trips I try to seek for the Adventure … but you can’t plan it, and if your lucky you find it. So that’s why I bought the 890 adv-r, and I love it for day trips … but it excels of multi day/weeks/mounts trips. Even with Mosko 80L reckless strapped to it.

Great choice and comparison from the standard Adventure. I upgraded from a 2020 790 Adventure to the '23 890R. Love the upgraded suspension from the standard Adventure. Love the low center of gravity vs other midweight ADV bikes. Mitas tires were good for factory 50/50 tires. With my 28" inseam, switching to the low seat made the seat height perfect. I bleed orange. My other 3 bikes are KTM. However the clutch on the 790/890 is lacking to say the least. I'm on my 4th clutch pack in 11, 655 miles in 5 months using the clutching method the same as all of my other KTMs. I'm diligent on keeping 20 mm+ slack in the clutch lever. Getting better mileage on my Motoz tires than the clutch packs.

You are doing something wrong with the clutch, I drove 20.000 km and had no issue with it other than tires and brake pads. I although ordered a clutch arm extension (AltRider one with 3 options) for the bike to have a little bit more friction zone for the technical stuff.

I'm a KTM guy, so of course you made the right choice! The reality is, as you said. Even if the 890R has shortcomings (though NONE of my KTMs/Husqvarnas , including a '20 790R, have ever left me stranded) nobody else has met the KTM standard of performance yet. BTW, I have a dealer near me that has a near new '23 DesertX (less than 200 mi.) for what seems like a low price. Let me know if interested and I'll help you connect.

I bought the 23 model in March and have been riding it hard since. I am 6'5" so the windscreen is fine for me with clean airflow on my helmet. Agreed the suspension is a bit stiff and hard at less than fast pace which can get fatiguing. I am 106kg and wound my suspension a few clicks past the comfort setting and found the sweet spot for my weight on and off road. Nice and plush without much fork dive on road and no bottoming out hitting washouts or rock steps.

I understand your comment regarding the 1290, but I owned both, and aldo the 890 is absolutely great, I must say that every thing works even a bit better with the 1290. The 1290 SAR is like a Cadillac pretty capable for off-road. Go for the 1290, unless you’re a bit short on budget or you really ride mainly off-road. Thanks for your videos, always very well done! 👍

Switched from a 1290 SAS to a 890R. I have to say I somehow agree. The 890 is great but if I am honest it’s still too heavy for more than green lanes for me. The only difference is I can ride it much harder there than the SAS on this roads. On the street the 1290 is a different animal. Smoother, more powerful, better quality and features. (Brembo, keyless, hydro clutch, big TFT, tire pressure mon etc.) Maybe SAR is the answer. 😅

Dear Ian, Thank you for a great channel and always great reviews! I particularly liked you resent 890R review as I from 2022 to 2023 ‘’downgraded’’ from a 1290 to a 890R 2023 model. I LOVE the bike, having owned more than 30+ motorcycles in my 47 year life, this one is special. I struggled with the front end design and have therefore modified this with a RebelX tower + many other additions….. Pictures can be shared via email if desired for your inspiration and future mods to your bike :-) A few of the mods are; RebelX rally tower + sticker decals AxP skid plate Carpe Itre navigation devise (best on the planet!!) PowerParts; heavy duty wheels Dirt Star, hand guards, sprocket, frame plugs Vanache; fuel gap, chain guard engine protection, pegs Perun Moto; luggage rack, strap brackets (for Mosko Moto R80 > when traveling I also mount my Nomad ADV rack panels) SeatConcept high rally seat (+38 mm) with no ‘’bump’’ Twalcom license plate and indicator holder Rottweiler carbon air intake box and foam filter Acropovic exhaust Lithium battery (weight saver) Scottoiler The bike is now approx +10 kilos lighter and + 10-15 hp compared to standard, and ready for my upcoming trip in South America. I am having the bike shipped from Europe to San Antonio in Chile with estimated arrival on January 6th 2024 > ahead of me then is months of driving in Chile and Argentina - eventually ending up in Ushuaia…… Take care, drive safe and enjoy the best ADV ever build! Best regards from Denmark Christian

Thanks for the video! I've had a '21 and a '23 890R. The changed valving makes the '23 a bunch more comfortable both on the street and the trail. The Mitas tires didn't last long on my bike, I found them to be borderline dangerous on our off road terrain. I went Motoz Rallz rear as you did, and paired it with the Dual Venture front. This did raise the ride height a bit, and made the ride a bit more stiff, but they are so confidence inspiring off road that the trade off is worth it. Looking forward to your "future content" regarding the dissasembly of the headllight. I still have to wire in my Quad Lock mount.

You nailed that video with a BIG hammer and SPOT on with what the 2023 ktm Adventure R is really about. I originally started out on a 2022 Klr thought being "a good beginner bike" as I'm fairly new to the adventure seen. An amazing bike for sure and the price point superior to all, BUT lacking in many departments, I had 0 confidence on that bike. Upgraded to the 2023 ktm adventure R and WOW!!!!!!! is all I can say too that. Thanks for what you do.... all the time and effort really helps us all out.

They inhabit a strange world between dirt bikes and adventure bikes, but they are very uncomfortable and tiring on anything other than the roughest and fastest of tracks. Mine got a simple re-valve to make it a bit more comfortable on smaller bumps, makes a big difference. The rear spring is quite quite stiff and best for heavier riders so mine was swapped for one rate down and the bike is comfortable and capable.

I’ve owned a R1250 gs, KTM 1090 and a T7. All with expensive after market suspension. The limiting factor on all of those bikes was the same. If you go as fast as the suspension allows and ride the bike off road ….your going to get flats. Allot of them. Tire tears and pinches. I’m finding myself moving towards the 390 to 500 cc bikes for ADV use because of this. Cover all the slab in the van to get there. Then launch the little bike. Good luck with your new bike 🙏👍

I think you can't live without the KTM. I sat on a regular 890 Adventure, and it blew me away on how light it felt. The seat height on the low setting was good for my 5'4" frame too. I'll have to sit on the "R" version and see how that compares. As long as I can get a tip toe down, I'm fine. I'm seriously considering selling my R125GSA low for the KTM 890.

KTM are really great offroad bikes. I been thinking about an 890 and a 350 exc-f myself. currently have a 2017 Honda AT, 2023 Yamaha WR250F, 2006 Honda CBR600RR. I either day ride 300-500 miles of 80% pavement 20% forest roads on the Honda AT or offroad parks with the WR or track days with the CBR600RR. I feel like the KTMs would be better offroad but crap on long pavement rides and obviously more expensive. Looking to potentially add a Honda 300 rally with a spring change for a street legal mild dirt bike for BDR trips. I'm in Atlanta. 73 inches tall, 210 lbs. planning to do BDRs in the rockies summer 2024. feel like a sub 350# bike would be better for 10-15 days of BDR riding rather than my 500+ lb Honda AT (not sure of current weight with crash guards and skid plate). NOTE: super tough not to have multiple bikes

Hopefully the 890 will also be reliable. I always hated the look of the 890 until the new plastics from this year. It makes sense now. But the main reason is that is ride so much easier off-road especially in tight and technical terrain. The DDX is very good but the KTM is better.,. Wish me luck 😮

Except for issues with KTM's reliability on several bikes for me and my friends this bike I think is one of the best if you want your adventure bike to be able to do some serious off-road work. ' When I tried this bike on some light off-road riding on fire trails and such it felt a lot like a heavier, more comfortable version of my 690 Enduro R, so I love me a bike like this one. I do not remember the 890 R i rode had cruise control, it looks like this one in the video has it, is that standard now or an optional extra ? If I knew this bike would have the reliability like the Japanese bikes I would already own it. If you are riding like most adventure riders and almost never take your bike off-road I would go for something else. If you want a KTM the standard 890 Adventure fits most "Adventure" riders better than this R version, as mentioned in the video and as I have found, there is not another adventure bike as good off-road as this one. BigRockMoto At least for the first gen 890 adventure R there was the MRA Touring Windshield that was a great bit taller, if they still do a windshield for the 2023 model I would recommend that you try that one out. It is quite at bit taller though so It might be in the way when you are standing up leaning forward, you have to try it at least I think. I would love to try the Desert X , I could not own a Ducati as it is though, their service prices are just ridicolous.

Without trying to sound completely ignorant, if this is more off-road biased in set-up, performance and feel and is going to be used primarily for aggressive/technical off-road use compared to tarmac (maybe a 75 - 25% ratio off-road to on road? I’m guessing), why not just save a whole lot of money and get a road legal dirt bike and keep the 890 for a more well rounded ADV? The dirt bike can be set up for long haul off-road adventures fairly easily without compromising the off-road capabilities to any significant amount. Then you would have a fairly well rounded ADV for touring and a purpose built off road thrasher.

I had a 21 890 Adventure R and loved the engine but the high speed damping sucked! The front end would beat me up on sharp edge bumps and tried to have the first few incheches of travel softened up without success. I sold it and bought another BMW GS because I'm not a serious off roader. I wonder if they fixed the high speed damping?

Nice to hear someone else finally say that. Mine was a 22 if I recall, but it was the same. The fork could not tolerate sharp edged bumps. The tire would just violently deflect, even loosened up. It was on quite bad. It was also susceptible to head shake, both after hitting sharp edges at speed, or at high speed on asphalt. I had the front wheel trued, which did have excessive runout, but it didn't help. I traded off the KTM and have a T7 on order. After owning 8 new KTMs, I have no plans for another.

""why do you keep buying more KTMs?"" I'm glad you have. You've had the Norden 901, the 890 adv, adv rally, and now the R. Nobody else has the expertise you do when it comes to these bikes. All you need now is the 901 Norden Expedition and you'll have had all the 890 adventure variants. I'm a little surprised the 890 Duke hasn't come out in your street bike test videos. I used to dream about getting one of those and then when the time came for me to get my 2nd bike, I sat on it and my ass immediately hated the saddle so I checked it off my list.

I don't see anyone asking the questions , so I will. This is a very off-road capable machine but how in the hell is the fuel tank not a liability on the trail? It looks like it's the first thing to hit the ground in a fall, also how easy to puncture it with a stick or rock while riding. So now you are out on the trail and it breaks down how do you access the Engine? The fuel tank wraps around the entire motor. Won't that hold heat in on the motor and boil the fuel? I like the bike a lot aside from the fuel tank design. YES I GET IT, LOWER CENTER of GRAVITY. I would be afraid to ride off-road for fear of damaging the fuel tank, there has to be a better way.
