Happy Friday everyone! So Subaru has finally announced the EPA rated range for the Solterra. The Premium trim with the 18” wheels gets 228 miles on a full charge, while the Limited/Touring on the 20” wheels gets 222 miles. We saw 235 miles on the on-board range computer on a full charge. Expect us to do a follow up video with some more extensive range testing once we get one back home for a full week to test.

IONIQ 5 AWD does 256 miles EV6 AWD does 274 miles ID4 Pro AWD does 251 miles Unless this is priced a good amount below those options, it’ll be a very mediocre EV.

Subaru homepages in Japan and European countries say max charge rate 150 kW. Which makes sense since BZ4X also has 150 kW max rate. It would be odd that the US market gets a different version. I would check your sources and make a correction if needed. Only 100 kW max rate would be a deal breaker for many.

25:18 I disagree. If you have sensitive control of your right foot, one-pedal regenerative braking can be super smooth. I've never had my passengers complain about car sickness and my wife is prone to it. It's the people who are used to two pedal braking that don't take their foot off of the pedal slow enough that causes the issue. It takes practice to be smooth.

1. Less than 250 miles of range 2. Not that quick compared to other EV competitors 3. Not really electric efficient, only gets 2.3-2.4 miles per kilowatt. 4. The black cladding on side doesn’t look good. 5. That gauge cluster is a failure, why not a traditional gauge with heads up display? I am definitely going to look elsewhere.

Thanks for the review. The black cladding is fine with me and actually gives the Cosmic Pearl White color a contemporary and cool black and white two tone effect. I really like the look and styling inside and out and the larger screen on the Limited. I ordered a Limited in Cosmic White. Subaru excels with AWD, X-Mode, Eyesight, and although I considered other EVs--I live at the top of a mountain in NC and we have been getting more snow in recent years, so the X-Mode and AWD has been a lifesaver. Since they only made 6,500 and I made it into the queue, I did not want to wait another year. The range and charging speed suffice fine for us. We will probably drive our 2019 Forrester for longer trips for awhile. I also feel the Subaru brand is reliable, their corporate brand beats out some of the other EV makers, and I am feeling grateful I was able to be an early adopter.

I'm glad Subaru is finally getting an EV, and I'm buying a Solterra in a few weeks. The interior is all Toyota and is shared with the Bz4x (from which it is based) as well as the new Prius, including the seats. I'm not thrilled about the dashboard, I wish they would have taken the cues from the Venza instead. It has a more traditional instrument cluster with a small holographic that displays your speed and other data on the windshield. I realize the battery pack is expensive, but for +$50k for the Touring I would have hoped the interior was a little nicer and not just ported from the Prius.

The big question is “how much” and is this the big battery version or the small battery version with a larger capacity pack to follow? Probably the latter given the disappointing range figures. On paper this thing blows, but when you take a closer look that range figure is about what you get from a Mach-E SR AWD which makes sense if there’s gonna be a bigger battery option down the road. Compared to an Ioniq 5 or EV6 this thing does not stack up, so if this is the biggest pack you’ll be able to get I have no idea why you buy this car over the competition. Again price comes into play. If economy is your focus, ditch the AWD and get a Leaf, Bolt or a KoNiro twin. If you want premium, why this over anything else out there?
@PatsinPA
@PatsinPA 2 жыл бұрын
In terms of range, you have to factor in this is an AWD first attempt from both Subaru & Toyota. Don’t think the Mach-E or ID.4 at this price point would match this one’s off-road capability. And ‘does it have a frunk?’ is not the million dollar question. Sofyan is so focused on this minimal space that’s only in a few EV’s like Tesla or his Mach-E…it really shouldn’t matter since there’s so much more interior space. And the straight line 0-60 times are not what these types of EV are intended for…they’re comfort cruisers or people movers. Not every models needs a performance edition with 4 sec 0-60 times. If so, maybe he should only be reviewing sports cars, GTs & hot hatches. Just be more be balanced my man…

220 miles EPA range is more like 170 miles in the winter, maybe less, if you live somewhere it gets cold. That ~50 mile range reduction could significantly lower the car's utility for some use cases. Guessing the prices is going to be in the low 40's before tax credits. Sad that Toyota and Subaru could NOT come up with a 300+ mile range for their first EV. Based on my experience with an EV with a 240 mile range on a full charge, anything below that number become problematic when you want to take a long trip because of the unreliability of the fast charging network in the US. Only last year Toyota was bad mouthing EV's and so making one that fails to meet or exceed the competition makes me wonder if they're trying to discourage EV buyers so that they can later say, see, we told you the EV proposition was a not a good idea. After all, this is the company that refuses to give up hydrogen EV's.

The problem is at $40k there’s way better options in this price range. Yes, you may not need the power but if its the same price who cares plus they have better range. I for one don’t like that they’re trying to pass these off as crossovers. That’s a generous term for this and the EV6. The cut off back just cuts off valuable capacity back there.

I dunno what ure saying about the charging capabilities, I visited a dealership today, and the salesman said it would take about 30min to charge it. I dont remember if it was from 0 to 100, or from 0 to 75%, but it was one of those two.. So I dont understand when u say its gonna take entire 10 hours to charge.. with fast charging..

Question... as hybrids/electric/plug-ins etc. Become more available, do you think there will be a continued rise in gasoline prices in order to push evs? Also do you think this is the way to go with the mile range being so low compared to gasoline fueled cars, or should we wait until the batteries and range get better?

Well, we technically haven’t driven the bZ4x yet… and we also suspect it may end up being cheaper than the Kia. Personally, we think the EV6, Ioniq5, and Mach E are our favorites right now so it’s only going to come down to the pricing of this car and the Toyota.
