The 2023 Volkswagen Jetta Is VW's Last Sedan With An Uncertain Future

Nobody seems to know what the future holds for VW's last gasoline powered sedan in America. It looks like there will be a 2024 version, but it doesn't look like it'll be much different. With sluggish sales and VW's focus on electrification, the Jetta will likely soldier on for a few more years with only minor changes. On the other hand, it's a screaming deal with high fuel economy, a fun to drive nature and a big back seat.

I love mine. Base model Jetta S with the stick. It's comfortable, practical, quiet, pretty fun to drive, and gets truly insane gas mileage (last road trip 56 mpg). I find the seats perfectly comfortable and my two large convertible child seats fit well.

Alex, there is a mistake in this video. The blind spot monitor and rear cross traffic alert are standard on every 2023 Jetta, but some 2023 sports have a credit for the rear sensors (BSM and RCTA) due to the chip shortage.

I grabbed mine for a cheap second car that could also fit baby seats. Luckily my wife also drives manual so this car was a great option. Coming from a MK7 GTI, it desperately needs a tune. Hopefully Unitronic or APR will get theirs out soon (1.5T is only 2 years old). Mine actually came with the black rear spoiler from the GLI. It also has a credit for a delete of the blind spot. You’re crazy about the front seats being uncomfortable. No issues and the bolstering is nice.

I love my 2019 Jetta SEL Premium. It was not the car I expected to buy when I was in the market, but I've been delighted by it. Great mileage. Nice features. Super fun to drive. My only complaints are no vents in the center console for the rear passengers and that my model was before a mid-year refresh that made a winter package, which included remote start, standard.

In October 2020 I purchased a brand new Jetta S automatic. I got the wheels from the Atlas and swapped them three weeks later. Car was excellent in many levels. I don’t know what are you talking about the seat comfort. This is not a Mercedes S-Class. I am 6’2 and never felt any discomfort while driving. As a matter of fact when I was doing Lyft I picked up a group of 4 people. One of the ladies complimented the car because she said it reminded her of the brand new Audi she just purchased the prior week on her home town. And none of the passenger complained for lack of room. I asked them if I needed to adjust my driver seat and they were very happy with the room. Did a couple roadtrips and the car with the bigger 18 inch wheels was still achieving an excellent 44 miles per gallon. I still think the 2019-2021 Jetta R-Line was better looking and equipped than the new Sport. But, overall, the car is a solid choice. And the fact that it still uses an 8 speed auto versus a CVT and can opt for a 6 speed manual keeps it on my top choice.

I liked my first Jetta (2011) well enough that I bought another one (2020). Jettas are so underrated. Jettas are roomy, comfortable, handle well, get excellent fuel economy, have easy to use controls, and have a dignified, conservative exterior styling that will look good for years to come. Every time I drive my Jetta, I feel like I am driving a more expensive car.

Here's to automakers providing options for manual transmissions (with amazing economy), physical buttons + straightforward tech that are arguably not 'cheap' feeling. This makes sense at affordable prices, when many tech heavy vehicles push into traditionally luxury prices. I would LOVE to see a simple, manual compact SUV; this VW is a hopefully ray of light in an expensive, tech-heavy market!!

I'm still enjoying my 2019 Jetta S. The trunk release is under the lip below the logo, like an SUV. I had a 2017 Jetta S before, this one rides better, is quieter, has one more gear in the manual transmission and gets better mileage. It's great for the 650 miles in a day road trip I most often make. I bought a second set of wheels, so I have snows mounted and always have a full-size spare in trunk (bought the jack and wrench, too). With snows it does great in the Colorado mountains all winter. The only problem with the new Sport is that the prettier wheels and new pannel aren't enough to convince me to upgrade.

I like the elegant looks of the Jetta. It has, in my opinion, ample front ground clearance to go over and clear most of the humps, and probably with high peak torque rise well in the low end of engine speed range. My only concern with Jetta, as a FWD with transversely mounted engine, is that it is very hard to DIY (do-it-yourself) most maintenance repair, e.g. timing belt replacement, front oil seal replacement, reaching the sparkplug next to the firewall of a "V" type engine, etc. I believe sales will significantly improve if the engine is longitudinally mounted and the vehicle is AWD or at least "rear wheel" driven. Given a choice I would always opt for a RWD longitudinally mounted engine than a FWD transversely mounted engine of equivalent vehicle model regardless of the price.

It's not just the very efficient automatic transmissions that have killed manual gearbox . Exhaust gas emission control has killed the manual transmission with this annoying 'defect' of the throttle bodies (ecu forces it) which remain open after releasing the pedal . As a result a very annoying 'Rev-Hang' on the few manual models still available . Here the tester does not speak about it, what about it?

I don't actually like sedans. I prefer the fastback-style 2-door hatchback, like the Acura RSX/Integra, the 80's Chevrolet Cavalier, the Ford Probe, etc. The fact is, nobody makes them anymore. If it has two doors, it's a coupe. If it's a hatchback, it's an upright liftgate, with four doors for passengers and driver. My other preference is manual transmission, which now eliminates virtually all of the crossovers and SUV's, as well as nearly all pickup trucks. That leaves a handful of sedans, and maybe a couple of four-door hatchbacks, so I cope. This Jetta looks bland. I don't know how it compares to the 2016-ish models, in terms of comfort and ergonomics, but I test-drove a 2016 Golf R, and absolutely hated the seating, steering wheel placement, and the gauge cluster. It felt like an imposing wall immediately in front of me. I'm pretty tall, at 6foot-4-ish, and putting the seat back made it precarious getting into and out of the car, because the B-pillar was so intrusive. I'll still put this car on my short list, just because it's available with a manual, but I don't really have major intentions to purchase one. I'd likely select a Civic or a Mazda 3 first.

For most normal drivers and driving conditions 7.2 (heck round it up to 8) is very adequate. A little research (or being an old guy) will show that from 1900 to 2000, most regular cars took much longer to go 0-60. The typical gas hungry inline sixes & V8 sedans, wagons and trucks of the 50s-80s took 13 seconds or more to go 0-60. Even a sporty car like the 1966 Mustang with the base 289 V8 and auto transmission took about 9 seconds to get to 60 and folks thought that was amazing.

Cheaper on paper yes but then again good luck finding one in stock that hasn't either been marked up or has been sitting on the lot of the lousiest KIA dealer in the tri-county area.

The manual is more fun, cheaper to maintain, cheaper to buy, more reliable, and gets upwards 45 mpg on highway. It makes better use of the power band as well.

Lol. Last sedan. Click bait much. VW isn’t existing this segment. Between it and the Golf they are two of the best vehicles in this segment for “fun to drive” sedans. The civic and Toyota options are “youth” cars. The Jetta is a stripped down A3. The problem with this version is you can’t get an SLE with a manual transmission like you could with the 2015 version. Currently driving a 2015 TDI SLE with a manual transmission. See no reason to upgrade here, at least not with this stripped down version. The GLI doesn’t have the fuel economy and the capacitive button everything is a hard no for me.

Exaggerated height claims are a recurring theme among KZbin reviewers. This would not be a problem except for the fact it distorts the viewer's perception of the size of cars' interiors. One day I would like to see a group photo of all the KZbinrs to see how many 6 footers are the same height as the ones who are only 5'10". As a general rule, I deduct 1-2 inches from every height statement. 😉

As long as you can still get a base manual Jetta under or at 16 grand discounted? I think its worth a serious consideration. But over 19 grand? Nope. Nothing has been released that has convinced me to sell my 2015 Scion XB. First car for a teen? No way. Insurance on a new car is HIGH! Risk of bumping inti crap.. a teen needs a $4500 car.

Its laughable you think a bramd new Jetta is a good first car for a teenager. Way way too expensive for a first car for a broke teenager. Not even including the terrible interest rates and high insurance costs new younger cars have. Better off going used. Especially for a new driver. Mistakes will be made.

Prior to 2019, I would have agreed with all your points. The used market in the northeast is still tough, and, IF you could find this vehicle on a dealer lot, I would find it a better choice than what I’m seeing in the laughable used market at the exact same price (cash buy for either). I just looked and no dealer inventory within 500 miles of me.

VW hasn't been the same since Dieselgate. Nowadays they're basically the GM of Europe in terms of quality. There's a reason why they're usually the worst cheap brand when it comes to depreciation. Only get one if you can find a dealer willing to give it to you under MSRP (after taxes and fees), otherwise avoid.

It seems the only reason to buy a Jetta is if you want a manual transmission. It otherwise doesn't stand. If you want an automatic, the Elantra is cheaper, roomier, and has a vastly better infotainment system. After watching this review, I ask myself why VW bothers selling this Jetta at all in the U.S. It doesn't seem like it's trying too hard to be the best. Quite a humdrum package. On a subjective note, I also really don't like the styling of this generation. The front refresh is kind of ugly with the blobby oversized grill, and the weird angular interior is not an attractive environment.
