As #Mazda continues to pursue its push toward being considered more of a premium brand, the 2024 #MazdaCX90 is built to represent that change in its purest form. The #CX90 is a direct replacement for the old #MazdaCX9 and with it, the electrification era begins for Mazda. The #CX90PHEV is also the brands first-ever plug-in hybrid, while the #CX90Turbo and #CX90TurboS are the turbocharged I-6 cylinder engine from Japan that enthusiasts have been waiting for.

Good morning guys! Welcome to video 2 of 4 that will be posting this week from our drives last week! We're also leaving for the New York Auto Show tomorrow, so stay tuned for a bunch of coverage at the show as well later this week! We also want to apologize for this video being roughly twice the length of our usual reviews, we decided to combine both the CX-90 Turbo S and CX-90 PHEV into 1 video! Trying to decide between the two powertrain is probably the hard part since they are both so good, but also so different! Which would you choose?

The number doesn’t add up on PHEV electrical motor 68kw = 91 hp. 323-91 = 232 on ICE? But I thought the ICE is just a regular 2.5 mazda engine

With the PHEV having a heat pump, you can heat/cool the car (or listen to music) with the engine off. Great for waiting in the car in hot summers or cold winters. Also full EV driving in the city. Only problem with it is the unpainted arches and skirts 🤦🏼‍♂️

@@justanotherasian4395 Yes, I found out more information on the new 8 speed Mazda transmission. The Torque converter is replaced with a planetary gear set and a 3 input wet clutch. Wet or dry, it is still a clutch that is a wear item and I suspect is responsible for the jerky starts that so many have reported. Since it replaces a fluid coupling of a torque converter with a clutch, it has the same problems of a DCT

Saw a lot of people here trying to decide between the telluride, Highlander and the CX-90. It’s simple, if interior space is your priority, CX-90 would lose every time, as it was never designed to be a minivan alternative. But if you care about design, craftsmanship, driving dynamics, and how all of them come together as a whole, it would literally be an insult to even compare the CX-90 to the highlander, telluride, or even the MDX. Nobody in their right mind, given they know at least a little bit about cars, would compare a RWD inline-6 turbo setup to a bunch of FWD turbo 4 and V6 cars and ask which is better - they are not even in the same league. Can’t believe we are still having this conversation…

@@markcoopers1930 thanks for the in depth info. Hopefully Mazda partnering with Toyota will result in Mazda being able to crank out more niche models and speed up innovations than they've been able to in the past. You did a really nice review of the new CX90. I'm looking at making the CX90 our new family vehicle. One thing on the soft touch molded plastic. I appreciate the choice of material in that location. While leather is nice, it takes some tlc over the years to make sure the sun doesn't shrink the leather in those areas. I have three children and a busy life. I don't need a car which requires meticulous care to the leather. I just don't have the time or the will to take care of it. Of course, that's my life and my perspective. One thing I found impressive is the bolstering of this vehicle. Granted I haven't had a personal experience with it, but watching you, you had very little sliding back and forth when carving the curves of your route. One request: when you complete your 0-60 test, can you consider adding a rolling start to 70 test? This would be something akin to an onramp to the interstate. Maybe something like 20-70? Excellent reviews sir. Thank you and keep up the great work!!!

I know Sofyan likes the boxy look and I agree as long as the suv is supposed to be rugged, but I love the curves on this CX-90 it looks smooth. I rented a CX-9 one time and I like the interior layout. It was easy on the eyes roomy and comfy but this just takes it to a more upscale next level. Now I'm not an suv guy I'm a car enthusiasts, my wife loves suv's as I would guess most women do, and I would absolutely buy this new CX-90 for her just because I like it, forget about if she likes it or not lol (don't tell her I said that)😁. Now what's going on with the Mazda 6 what's taking so long!

The Mazda 6 was discontinued because of the lack of demand for sedans. I just test drove this thing today. Great looking, soaks up road bumps pretty well for the wheel size. Also interior feels and looks great, although i did not get much time to play with the instrument cluster and infotainment. With all the positives in mind, i noticed one big and one subjective flaw. If you are taller than 6 foot (i am 6' 4"), i am pretty sure you will hate the driver seat. I also weigh 220 lbs, so not too bulky. The middle cluster to the door panel width is too narrow! There is no way to relax the legs a bit. It forces you to sit lets say properly and straight. Good for short trips, horrible for anything longer than 1 hr. This is a big bummer for me. 2nd, the top engine is too loud in the cabin especially when being aggressive with the pedal, and also it is not as torque rich as the spec claims. It will be hard to get better than say 6.5 second 0-60 on a regular basis, although i did not mesure it. Anyways maybe it needs some breaking in. The latter is bot that big of a deal to me personally, but the former is a deal breaker. Anyone else experience this?

Little worried they broke the embargo on this since driving impressions are to be released tomorrow. Great review though. Mazda has a winner here, I'm not sold on some of their interior material choices. The white will never work where I live in snow, and the suede is a deal breaker as it will be a nightmare to take care of. Seats are still hard, I'll never figure out why Mazda will not fix the seats compared to others, and it doesn't sound like they fixed the heavy steering yet, which driving modes should fix.. @@fakedazzleful the first week of December was the last time I filled up my Prime with gas at Costco and that’s something I think I might miss if I go with the inline-6. I think a deciding factor for me will be what the final EV range will be for the PHEV model. If it’s at least 38 miles, that’s enough to cover my daily driving needs. If it’s 28 miles like the CX-90 PHEV, then I might go with the inline-6.

@Paul Ira well I can tell you this. If your prime still work then keep it and wait for the cx 90 next year since it will have more feature and better stuff overrall

Hope they find a way to put that inline into the new miata. Or at least give us an option to by a turbo version or a non turbo version

I think Sofan mentioned several times that unlike Toyota, Mazda cannot lose money on any vehicle that they produce. Since that’s the case, putting the new inline-6 into a Miata or a Mazda6 wouldn’t be financially smart for Mazda. In America, people are SUV/CUV crazy and that’s where the money is for Mazda at the moment.

Too nose heavy for the Miata. The current Miata is very neutral and lightweight.

A larger convertible would be nice. Perhaps the size of a Lexus LC? Make it 10 or 20 grand less than the Lexus.

I'm considering this and the kia sorrento PHEV. Both 24 models. Both are beatiful.
@clarkkent9080
@clarkkent9080 Жыл бұрын
The kia Sorrento PHEV gets 32 miles of range from a 13.8 Kwh battery while the CX-90 gets only 25 miles of EV range from a 17.8 Kwh battery. The CX-90 inline 6 goes 25 miles on 1 gallon of gas so charging its battery and running on EV only saves you 1 gallon of gas. And in my area, it cost as much to charge that battery as it costs for 1 gallon of gas.

Next time you review cars with cargo space, bring along a single jogger and dual tandem seat stroller. Family ppl want to know how those fit with ALL seats up.

I just can get myself to buy this with its small 3rd row. I would spend the same money on the grand highlander. Of course I realize that the GH won’t be as sporty as this CX90

It’s definitely a cool car, but a few things to be wary of when using it as a do-all family car. That nice fabric trim would get destroyed if any family is like mine, and the non-carpeted 2nd row seat backs are sure to get scuffed or torn. And not a fan of the artificially fading LED turn signals that Mazda (and BMW) is doing; it looks much better when it’s just on/off. Otherwise, a lot to like here in terms of style, luxury, features, and practicality.

I really do hope that Mazda bring back the Mazda6 with the new inline 6 engine in it. That sounds like a good competitor to the BMW 3-series.

Not if they don’t do a m competition competitor... you all love to include Japanese brands in big automotive fights when they simply don’t have the chops. A rwd mazda 6 would be cute but nothing more than cute. NOT a bmw competitor.

“I like how this drives more the Ford Explorer I drove”…..yup! That’s pretty obvious as no Ford SUV is known for driving dynamics. Mazda is such a great company that has found that sweet niche of providing great vehicles to astute customers without making the customer question whether they paid too much. Lexus quality, German dynamics at Toyota and Honda pricing….BRILLIANT! Way to go Mazda! My wife’s CX-5 Signature and my Miata RF Club BBR are both amazing ! Keep hitting it out of the park!
